Really helpful book. Covers all you need to know about getting your pup as well as giving it a happy, healthy life. We have owned 11 dogs over the years & this really is the book for anyone thinking of getting a pup. Really don’t understand the few negative reviews this book has.

To much of the book about buying a pup and not enough training. Cut half the book out and cut the price.

This was a good first puppy book and my 9 year old also read it. It gives the basics and meant we could start some training before our puppy was allowed out.

I have a canine training instructor qualification with a UK wide science led ethical and humane training organisation. I like to checkout new books clients may access.
I would NEVER recommend this book to a client. There is too much important advice missing:
New owners crucially need advice on many behavioural issues. In this book I could find:
1.NO MENTION of puppy emotional needs, enrichment or understanding their puppy’s communication.
2. NOTHING about how to manage normal puppy issues such as biting, appropriate management of stealing items
3. NOTHING about early mild growling and guarding behaviours.
Very common, misunderstand it and you can end up with a lifetime of issues.
4.NO advice on how to choose a good puppy class: The wrong approach can do lasting damage to an anxious pup
5.Most worrying, is there is NO
” If you have problems, these are appropriate organisations to search for help”
A new owner may not know which are ok and which to avoid. The internet is awash with misinformation
If a practitioner, registered under the umbrella of a recognised science based, humane animal training organisation, offers training advice on complex issues without, first getting a vet health and pain assessment, on the animal, this could be deemed both gross negligence and potentially cruel, and that practitioner’s fitness to practice may be questioned by the organisations governing board
It seems that Mr Hall is choosing to offer training advice without establishing first if the animal is in pain in front of millions of viewers
Screen shot on another 2-star review shows evidence of such an incident with poor Ruby the retriever.
Why would a new owner want to consider taking puppy advice from such an individual?
Some of the advice in this book is appropriate, but a new owner may not be able to discern what is.
There are many informed puppy books using science led ethical advice, that would be of far more benefit to a new owner
