I played the violin as a child but barely remember any music theory or can read sheet music as proficiently as I use too. Someone recommended GCSE music content as a life hack for more simplified easy to digest music theory on a music forum and I couldn’t agree more. A lot of the stuff is written in notation format so you can study it directly or refer back to it when watching online tutorials.

Parents, remember every child learns differently. As someone who their instrument down due to the pressure from adults around me, ask if the guidebook works for their style of learning before purchasing. Focus on comprehension and application rather than memorisation and regurgitation. GCSE’S are stressful enough. As long as you cultivate culture that encourages a life long love for learning I’m sure they’ll do great regardless of what resources they prefer to study from.

Great guide for music students whether you’re 15 or 50yo.

CGP has never let us down. A great comprehensive revision aid for my 14 year old daughter. As always simple and stylishly presented and she is finding it very useful for revision.

This GCSE revision books is a great way to test yourself and refresh knowledge before exams.

It has sample questions and plenty of info to re-read and for others to test you on.

The explanations are clear and well thought out and any diagrams or notation is also clear and legible.

This is a great addition to your revision schedule and would make for an interesting reads for those interested in music in general.

I always like these CGP revision guides. They are condensed so you can rapidly brush up on the key details from across the syllabus, and also get a good overview of a topic prior to lessons, if you are keen.

The material is not just summarised, but good use of layout, colour and underlining makes it really quick to skim down to find the detail you want.

Learning, and in particular revision, is best when you force yourself to recall the material. It’s really easy to read a section and think, “Yeah, I know that”, but it’s much harder when you cover the answers up and ask yourself what the categories, points or details are before revealing them to see if you got them right. So make sure you revise this way!

The material is split into eight sections, covering basic music theory and instrument types, musical forms, and then sections on ensemble, film music and popular/modern music. Each section has a revision summary, some easy questions and some sample exam questions. At the end is a full practice paper. Note that this guide attempts to cover the syllabus from more than one exam board, so at various points it states that certain material is only required for one or other exam boards.

My copy did get slightly mangled during shipping, but it’s still perfectly usable and I can’t blame CGP or criticise the book itself for this: that’s the luck of the draw.

If you are sitting the exam and want to do well, I would highly recommend picking up a copy of this and spending a good amount of time revising from it alongside your lesson notes.

Though I got this for my teenage daughter who is in her first year of music gcse, I have been reading through it on the odd occasion to brush up on my very rusty music knowledge!
According to my daughter, it’s a great text to have to hand and it’s just what she needs. Yet, as her parent I find it a great as it runs through all the basics at the beginning regarding the fundamentals of the subject, so I can keep up with her (for a bit, anyway!)
This is an accessible and approachable text that is valuable for this very active gcse, and I’m more than happy to recommend it for all.

Just like usual, CGP blends learning in a very openly readable and easy to understand way with some cracking British style humour.

Even though this is a GCSE book I feel like those who are thinking about doing it as a subject can also take advantage. As someone who failed GCSE music as a subject, I would have done better with something like this myself.

Good overview of the music GCSE curriculum, in a readable and colourful format. Covers all that is needed with examples.
The previous editions of this came with a CD of music examples, now this is done with Internet links as this is now the most accessible way of playing music.
Good companion for any students studying music.

My son is sitting his GCSE music and he informs me that this guide is very useful.
It has the set music pieces in to help you learn them and also guides and help with the terminology and theory.
It is on his bedside table and says it’s useful and easy to dip in and out of it to revise regularly in the run up to the exams
