Piano Time Carols – The Oxford Piano Method [Sheet Music]
£9.50
There’s nothing quite like gathering around the piano at Christmas time to sing and play through the favourite carols, though amidst all the Christmas hurly-burly there’s never much time to practise them. Realising this, Pauline Hall has produced Piano Time Carols – 19 really easy arrangements of the best-loved carols starting at around the level of Piano Time 1. They have been carefully simplified so that, instead of learning just one or two carols, you will find that you can play a wide selection, to the delight of your friends and family!
The left-hand part is, with a single exception, in one position, and there are optional accompaniments to a number of carols for your teacher or a friend to play.

I am an adult retuned to piano and studying for Grade 1 whilst my daughter is age 8 and studying for Grade 1Prep Test. Despite it being easy play my daughter found it slightly too hard but could play a couple of carols. I also found it a but more challenging than expected and could manage my way through more than half the carols after
asking my piano teacher how to play things I had not yet encountered. My advice is that beginners will be able to play this but will have to put in some practise first! It was still quite fun to be playing carols at Christmas and I hope to have mastered the entire book by next Christmas.

I love this book & have used it for years with my beginner pupils. However, some of the duets sound terrible, others amazing but they are easy to learn & the children can hear the melody instantly. The hardest song, ding dong merrily is so much harder than the others though & in my opinion would have been better placed in a slightly harder carol book. It is still an excellent product that I will use time & time again.

Good starter book for carols. A variety of difficulty. Some carols played as a single line melody between two hands and others utilising right-hand melody and reasonably simple left hand chords. Suggest suitable grade 1 / 2 (some have duet part for the tutor)

This book has all the classics. They are really simple kids versions though. Suitable for any child that is working towards their ABRSM Grade 1 or similar. If you’re child is a bit more advanced then there are also accompaniment parts too, so two people can practise together. My only warning is that competent pianists might find the versions in here too simple. It’s really a beginner’s book.

This is an excellent book for both adults and children who want a simple book where they can play a few Carols. It is mostly geared towards children but is not too simplified so I do have some adult pupils which have enjoyed this book. There are numerous titles in this book, all really popular, there are no ‘fillers’ in just to make up the numbers, every piece is a welcome addition. There are some good, simple yet effective duets, a really enjoyable book. It’s reasonably priced, like the rest of the books in Pauline Hall’s Piano Time series, and the books’ design means that it stays open on the music stand and lays flat so the book doesn’t fly off whilst you are playing. For newer learners really but my pupils who have been playing longer still like to dig this book out and use it as a starting point and add their own notes to it also. The pieces are of quite equal standard throughout the book so it’s not like some Carol Books you can get, where, the relatively new learner will want to do a few carols and only be able to do the first 2 or 3 until next year; in this book they can easily manage all of these so it’s a real boost to their confidence. Very useful.

My children have turned to this book every year for the last five years and it has bought a lot of Christmas joy to our household. Used by a now 13 year old Grade 2 player and a 15 year old who doesn’t even play the piano but has spent many hours sitting in front of this book and taught herself how to play the carols because she loves the music. They now play the duets and never seem to tire of playing the carols every year. Very simple but lovely arrangements.

My favourite carol book for young pianists. I teach primary age children and this is great from fairly early on up to easy pieces to amuse grade 1/2 players. There is a mix of tunes divided between the hands as duets with the teacher up to faily simple tune and accompaniment for the student to play as a solo. I now own several copies so I can hand them out over Christmas.

Excellent for very new students! Traditional, well known and modern carols can be found in both solo and duet format. Accompaniments are in no way difficult, perhaps too easy, but allows room for teacher flexibility in harmony and role.
Most are found around middle C position – great for the early learning – which is great practise for those who have moved on to learning in similar motion setups, to review old hand positions, whilst being fun and Christmassy. Not too austere, but not overly colourful either.
Highly recommended!
