It’s a simple little book, but I think it’s actually really helpful for explaining evolution to just about anyone! Our little girl is very small at 2, so she has no idea what the book is really about, but she enjoys all the colourful balls, and talks about the balls and the holes as the turns the pages 🙂 Great quality book as well.

We are having a little girl and as a very liberal feminist anthropologist married to an engineer, I want her to be as familiar with the sciences as she is with the arts. I have multiple of these books and will be purchasing more as I believe it’s never too young to be exposed to expanding one’s mind. Obviously, I got this so she can relate to her mom! I got one on engineering too!
We tend towards organic and sustainable living and toys, purchasing mostly wood and cotton items, and we read mostly on tablets for the sheer volume of books would be overwhelming, but it’s nice to hold a book and read it to a child, and I like these board books for infancy to toddlerhood. They are cute and tend to hold up better that anything with paper pages. For anyone looking to expose their little one to the sciences early, these are a must!

In contrast to other books of the collection that focus on math/physics related topics, this baby book is very disappointing. The pages are wasted trying to convey a single concept (natural selection) squeeze in on secondary aspect (replicator) that only adds confusion. The book could have presented the concepts of adaptation to the environment first, and then go into phenotypic variation, then play with both… In order to provide a more didactic illustration of natural selection. But for a young baby that’s still some coloured balls to look at.

I think this is the best book of the series. Every book starts with “this is a ball” so to describe evolution under these parameters I think is incredible. It also seems more interesting for the children as it speaks to the ball rather than just describing it doing something – when the ball falls down a hole the book says “bye bye ball” which my son waves at ❤️
