This book is well written, clear and well layed out, and covers all the necessary information for a business analyst. If you are studying for the BCS foundation, this is a must have, and if you are a BA on the job, you will probably find yourself referring to this from time to time. Recommended.

First copy came through damaged but Amazon replaced with no issue and put it down to the courier anyway.
The book has been invaluable to me. I am currently going through the BCS Diploma and have now passed four of the five exams and can honestly say it has been a god send. Having something physical in front of you rather than going back over a course pdf or PowerPoint/presentation isn’t the same for me. All very clear and concise while at the same time being very comprehensive. Only thing is I wish I bought it earlier on.

This, combined with 99 Techniques, is a fantastic resource for Business Analysts. It’s a great reference book that covers what a Business Analyst should do and provides useful methodologies that support the real-world application of Business Analysis.
I read the third edition when it came out, and that copy is pretty tired-looking from all the use. Glad to have the fourth edition, which expands a little bit more into the Agile mindset (but ultimately a lot of the core principles of this book already applied to agile). A really useful read if you’re a BA and you are looking for some clarity in what the role is and how to approach things holistically.
One slight criticism is that there’s a lot of assumption that techniques such at CATWOE (or WTCAOE… which the book recommends but then proceeds to give examples in the original order) and BAM are the de-facto ways to gain perspective of the ‘to-be’. Arguably they are exceptionally useful techniques; I’d like to see the next edition explore alternate routes. (Oh and some of the diagrams need tidying up a bit!)
That asides, I’d heartily recommend this book for any BAs looking to sharpen their skills and reaffirm what value a BA can add to an organisation.

I have just completed reading the 4th Edition having enjoyed the 3rd and earlier editions of this work, and it’s in this context I have the following observations:
On the one hand the authors have made strenuous efforts to include up to date techniques that come into the orbit of the Business Analyst and emphasising Agile methods is an important facet of this.
I do however think, changing the nice and clear business analysis process model of earlier editions with, in my opinion at least, a far more complex ‘service analysis’ wrapper has lost some clarity in a quest to incorporate a now fashionable topic. Likewise the earlier editions had the benefit of being a nice, compact read ( the 3rd edition was 280 pages in total) whereas version 4 has become far more of an encyclopaedia in order to fit in all the service design, enterprise architecture and overall detailed Agile development descriptions and as a result is now over 400 pages long! – losing this compactness appears, at least to this reader, to be a dis benefit.
I would urge the authors for the 5th and future versions to prune back some of the additional items of this edition and possible write a companion tome to cover the enterprise architecture, service design and whatever else becomes the vogue.
