This was a useful introduction to freelancing – I’ve been flying solo for 2 years now so a lot of content was familiar, but the explanation of how taxes work was *really* helpful.

It was very social media/media industry focused which at times was frustrating: I appreciate that this probably makes up the main audience for the author, but it would have been nice to see case stories from a broader range of industries. Plus, the author poses the question: “can you be freelance without being on social media?” without really answering it: the answer from my perspective is an absolute YES. (and I’m in a field where many of my peers are on socials). Again the perspective in the book was limited in this regard.

I do have to flag a glaring omission though: the author writes about different marketing strategies and mentions that an email newsletter can be a useful way to secure email addresses of people you can market to. I turned the page expecting a useful summary of GDPR explaining how you need to get *explicit* permission to use emails for marketing purposes… zilch. Given that the book was so good on other legal issues, this was disappointing.

Excellent guide for anyone setting out on their own business path, this book is tightly written, confident and often very witty.

I recently bought this book alongside Sian Williams Meades’ The Pyjama Myth on a whim, and I feel I must say that while I expected the two authors to provide the same information in their books, the two have distinctive voices and distinctive opinions on what it takes to build a career that is truly freelance, truly your own. I adored this book and found myself adding many a sticky note to the insightful information that filled its pages, turning back over to read the information again and truly savouring each bite of information I could gain from my reading experience. This book will be treasured for a long time to come and sit happily with Meades’ book as my freelancer bibles.

With its practical assessments, real life case studies from freelancers, and in-depth information about income sources, overcoming embarrassment, and selling your skills, Anna Codrea-Radio is one voice you don’t want to miss.

I’ve been freelancing for years and have read loads of books around this topic but this is by far the most practical, engaging and well-written one. I was hooked by the author’s story and she weaves her personal narrative into the book just enough to make it interesting and relatable, but she also gives a lot of excellent tips. What I found most beneficial was that it was geared towards the UK market. I have read various books on freelancing for American residents, but this one had tips that were specifically useful for UK readers. I took 14 pages of notes! And will be putting them to use in my own freelancing practice.

Fabulous book – eminently practical and extremely readable! I know it’s not intended as a book you read cover to cover, but there’s something very compelling about it, and all the practical stuff is threaded through with the authors story. Lots that I hadn’t thought of and has really framed how I will think of my work in the future. Recommend to anyone flying solo!

Adored this book. Anna writes so beautifully and clearly about what it’s like to build a successful freelance career. I’ve been freelance for almost four years now and I found myself taking notes about how to do more for my business as I was reading your book. I particularly loved how there’s a mix of super practical and actionable advice, even email templates for finding new clients or explaining mortgages to also tackling mindset issues eg. money shame/ sales and reframing embarrassment etc. because there’s no point in telling people what to do if you don’t uncover why they may really be holding themselves back. You’ve also got a lot of lifestyle/freelance life stuff in there which is so important for a sustainable and lasting career which like with mindset, is another important piece of the work puzzle that often gets left out.

It really is a textbook that all freelancers should have sat on their desk. I’m going to keep going back to it and give it to every freelancer I know! Thank you Anna xx
