The Teaching Delusion: Why teaching in our schools isn’t good enough (and how we can make it better)
£14.30
The new title from John Catt Educational poses challenging yet important questions to its readers. Schools are filled with great teachers, but is great teaching taking place in every classroom? How can educators expect students to cultivate a lifelong passion for learning if they themselves are lacking this?
Robertson’s solution is twofold. To promote excellent teaching, there must be a shared understanding of what high-quality teaching really is what does it look like, and how can it be fostered? Secondly, there must be a school-wide desire to engage in professional learning. With his school having won the General Teaching Council for Scotland’s Excellence in Professional Learning Award in 2019, Robertson uses his personal track-record of success to explore how these barriers can be addressed to lead to a transformation in teaching practice.
Written by a teacher and school leader for teachers and school leaders, The Teaching Delusion aims to support teaching communities to develop and improve their practice, in order to ensure that all students receive the same level of excellent education. Aligning himself firmly on the side of teachers and keen to avoid teacher bashing, Robertson sensitively engages in an often controversial discussion about how to improve the quality of teaching, aiming to boost knowledge, awareness and ultimately self-esteem in both educators and learners.
The Teaching Delusion combines practicality with pedagogy in a thoughtful, unique approach making it a vital resource for teachers and leaders at all levels who are looking to better their practice.

This book is a must-read for everyone in education. It’s both a practical guide to improving lessons – helpful for both beginning and experienced teachers – and an accessible reflection on the evidence and theory behind what helps students to learn. Many practitioners will take a sigh of relief when they read his astute portrayal of the problems with CfE and national guidance – he pretty much sums up the staff room criticisms we’ve been hearing for years while setting a clear new path for how things can be improved. Cannot recommend it highly enough.

This is a fantastic read for all teachers and school leaders. It provides an excellent summary of current education research together with practical advice and an instant framework for improving learning and teaching. Bruce raises some challenging questions about just how clear our understanding of what makes great teaching actually is. He links it with his practice as a school leader and shares his own experiences in improving learning and teaching. Bruce’s narrative style makes the book easy to read and allows you to instantly engage. What I particularly like is his ability to translate educational theory and research into a practical and accessible way. I have bought a copy for all staff in my schools. I think it provides an excellent starting point to engage staff in professional reading, to discuss what we truly mean by high quality learning and teaching and to ensure we have a shared understanding. I would highly recommend this book.

This book is instantly engaging and Bruce’s enthusiasm for teaching and professional reading is immediately apparent. He has been able to apply his experience of being a teacher and a school leader to give practical suggestions for improving teaching and learning in schools.
An excellent resource to not only be read by individuals but also to be shared and discussed with colleagues.

If you’re looking for one book to improve and to think about teaching practice then look no further. I’ve now read ‘The Teaching Delusion’ a few times: I found it decluttered my mind of a lot of nonsense about teaching and gave clarity – and, most helpfully, gave tools on how to get things right.
Those of us who made it through to the fantastic book launch in Edinburgh could sense not only the love and respect the audience had for the author but also the excitement and energy the book is bringing to thinking about what makes great teaching. What’s the teaching delusion? That what you think is good teaching might not be. Worse still it’s standing in the way of great teaching. Don’t be deluded – get the book and read it for yourself!

I bought this book in the hope/expectation that it would be useful to my PGDE students, and I wasnt disappointed. I reckon this is essential reading for teachers and leaders at any stage of their career. It separates the wheat from the chaff when it comes to choosing effective pedagogies, it gives explicit ways to improve learning in the classroom, explains how teachers can evaluate their teaching and develop, and describes how the focus of leadership should be on learning and teaching.
I’ll be recommending this book to our student teachers, and will be referring to it regularly. I’ll be ‘borrowing’ the task for developing a lesson evaluation toolkit, and sharing many of the messages within the book.
If this book had existed a few years ago I would have been a much better teacher, and a more effective leader.

Excellent book! I would highly recommend The Teaching Delusion to all teachers and school leaders. This book is extremely accessible and is full of excellent professional learning suggestions for any school – primary or secondary – looking to make significant improvements with teaching and learning. I bought a copy for every member of staff which has been very well received. Staff who are not big readers have commented on how easy it is to dip in and out of the book and takeaway lots of ideas.
