This book is suggested on the Addison’s self help group as a book to read which does not overwhelm, but breaks everything down into manageable chunks. If you are new to this condition, this book is a must read.

To be honest, I was quite disappointed with this publication. I was looking forward to having a ‘handbook’. I would have liked to have seen more links to other professional bodies for the surgical guidelines referred to on page 44 ie Royal College of Anaesthetists as this would provide ongoing up to date guidelines. I was alarmed to read on page 8 that ‘one ampoule’ should be included in the emergency injection kit. A minimum of two is required. These are easily broken both in a bag and during energy use. A minimum of one more as back up is essential. I personally carry two and have had one break despite being kept in a good quality kit bag. There was no new insightful information in the book that cannot not found easily online or in a patient information leaflet. It is a reasonable basic read for the newly diagnosed but I would urge further reading. I personally wouldn’t use it as a medical reference.

I was diagnosed with Addison’s earlier this year, and the Consultant recommended this book and the website details within it.
It has been my companion since, I am always referring to it as so helpful in getting me to understand what is happening. As I also have FND and a low immune system.

The book gives useful and precise information and guidance for anyone with Addison’s Disease. I’ve found it useful as it’s explained why I get certain symptoms and how to counteract them.

Having had Addisons for nine years I still struggle knowing when and by how much to increase my steroid dosage. Wish I’d had this book last year when I got ill, now realise I was also heading into a Addisons crisis! Explains how to identify symptoms of a crisis and how to manage yourself when you do get ill ( as most GPs have little understanding of the disease as it’s not very common).
, and it’s common to experience salt cravings. Will be passing it to my sister to read as she’s my main supporter.

This is a useful go-to book for those recently diagnosed with Addison’s disease – and for their families. All the information is presented in a straightforward manner, with good use of illustrations.

This is smaller than I thought and didn’t really offer me much more than I had already found and read on the internet. Having said that there were a few little things I found interesting and always good to have it in written form as a reference guide when you need it. As one reviewer said it’s quite a good book to give other people to read so they understand the condition a bit more. I think medical support available is a bit of a postcode lottery in the UK so being proactive and knowing what you are entitled to and should be doing to ensure your safety is key and this does cover that sort of info.

This book is great for people with Addison’s, family members, friends & work colleagues/bosses. It’s a nice compact book with the essentials all these.
It covers the Sick Day Rules; which I’m still amazed so many people are not told about on being diagnosed !! It gives assistance with dosages with both hydrocortisone & prednisone.
Some of the information I already knew but always good to review your own knowledge anyway. But I leant it to my eldest son to read- and when he’d finished it, he said ‘I finally understand-thanks’.
As Addison’s is such a complex illness- it’s not simply just absence of Cortisol. The effects this has on the body & mind are numerous and can be devastating too!
Not every one ‘bounces’ back to Pre-Addison’s state (I cannot bring myself to say Normal- as our lives change dramatically). This but ok helps others understand what is effected and why. By understanding it- helps us enormously.
But there is also lots of new information, that you may not be aware of or have heard before. For me, one of these was included in the section discussing the reasons for an Addison’s Crisis (or leading to). The percentages are interesting to read , as they certainly do take into account the impact of emotional stress on some one with Addison’s Disease. This is often overlooked or played down by Dr’s & Consultants yet, so frequently experienced by us living with the illness. Another was migraines!! Something that had never been explained to me- yet, here it was in black & white as a cause!!! It made perfect sense to me & helped explain what led to a couple of previous hospital admissions!!
Honestly-my advice is buy this book!! It’s a must have.
