Law: A Very Short Introduction (Very Short Introductions)
bVery Short Introductionsb: Brilliant, Sharp, Inspiring /bLaw is at the heart of every society, protecting rights, imposing duties, and establishing a framework for the conduct of almost all social, political, and economic activity. Despite this, the law often seems a highly technical, perplexing mystery, with its antiquated and often impenetrable jargon, obsolete procedures, and endless stream of judgements and complex legislation.
In this Very Short Introduction Raymond Wacks introduces the major branches of the law, describing what lawyers do, and how courts operate, and considers the philosophy of law and its pursuit of justice, freedom, and equality. Wacks locates the discipline in our contemporary world, considering the pressures of globalization and digitalisation, and the nature of the law in our culture of threatened security and surveillance. In this new edition, the author considers a number of social and political events that have had an impact on the law, including the COVID-19 pandemic, the growth of social media and surveillance, and the increasing threats to the rule of law.
ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.

International Law
Written by one of the world’s leading international lawyers, this is a landmark publication in the teaching of international law. International law can be defined as ‘the rules governing the legal relationship between nations and states’. However, with political, diplomatic and socio-economic factors shaping the law and its application, international law is much more complex. This refreshingly clear, concise textbook encourages students to view international law as a dynamic system of organising the world. Bringing international law back to its first principles and breathing new life and energy into the subject, the book is organised around four questions: Where does it come from? To whom does it apply? How does it resolve conflict? What does it say? This fourth edition includes references to new case-law and literature, and features (brief) discussions on recent topics of general interest, including the Ukraine invasion, global health law and energy law.Read more

Oil and Gas – Hydraulic Fracturing on Federal and Indian Lands – Rescission of a 2015 Rule (US Bureau of Land Management Regulation) (BLM) (2018 Edition)
Oil and Gas – Hydraulic Fracturing on Federal and Indian Lands – Rescission of a 2015 Rule (US Bureau of Land Management Regulation) (BLM) (2018 Edition) The Law Library presents the complete text of the Oil and Gas – Hydraulic Fracturing on Federal and Indian Lands – Rescission of a 2015 Rule (US Bureau of Land Management Regulation) (BLM) (2018 Edition). Updated as of May 29, 2018 On March 26, 2015, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) published in the Federal Register a final rule entitled, “Oil and Gas; Hydraulic Fracturing on Federal and Indian Lands” (2015 rule). With this final rule, the BLM is rescinding the 2015 rule because we believe it imposes administrative burdens and compliance costs that are not justified. This final rule returns the affected sections of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) to the language that existed immediately before the published effective date of the 2015 rule (June 24, 2015), except for changes to those regulations that were made by other rules published between the date of publication of the 2015 rule and now, and the phrase “perform nonroutine fracturing jobs,” which is not restored to the list of subsequent operations requiring prior approval. None of the changes by other rules are relevant to this rulemaking. Segregation of Lands – Renewable Energy (US Bureau of Land Management Regulation) (BLM) (2018 Edition)
Segregation of Lands – Renewable Energy (US Bureau of Land Management Regulation) (BLM) (2018 Edition) The Law Library presents the complete text of the Segregation of Lands – Renewable Energy (US Bureau of Land Management Regulation) (BLM) (2018 Edition). Updated as of May 29, 2018 The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is amending its regulations to add provisions allowing the BLM to temporarily segregate from the operation of the public land laws, by publication of a Federal Register notice, public lands included in a pending wind or solar energy generation right-of-way (ROW) application, and public lands that the BLM identifies for potential future wind or solar energy generation right-of-way applications under applicable legal requirements. The purpose of such segregation is to promote the orderly administration of the public lands. Lands segregated under this rule will not be subject to appropriation under the public land laws, including location under the Mining Law of 1872 (Mining Law), for up to two years from the date of publication of notice under this rule, subject to valid existing rights, but would remain open under the Mineral Leasing Act of 1920 (MLA) and the Materials Act of 1947 (Materials Act). Competitive Processes, Terms, and Conditions for Leasing Public Lands for Solar and Wind Energy Development (US Bureau of Land Management Regulation) (BLM) (2018 Edition)
Competitive Processes, Terms, and Conditions for Leasing Public Lands for Solar and Wind Energy Development (US Bureau of Land Management Regulation) (BLM) (2018 Edition) The Law Library presents the complete text of the Competitive Processes, Terms, and Conditions for Leasing Public Lands for Solar and Wind Energy Development (US Bureau of Land Management Regulation) (BLM) (2018 Edition). Updated as of May 29, 2018 Through this final rule the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is amending its regulations governing rights-of-way issued under the Federal Land Policy and Management Act (FLPMA) and the Mineral Leasing Act (MLA). The principal purposes of these amendments are to facilitate responsible solar and wind energy development on BLM-managed public lands and to ensure that the American taxpayer receives fair market value for such development. This final rule includes provisions to promote the use of preferred areas for solar and wind energy development, called “designated leasing areas” (DLAs). It builds upon existing regulations and policies to expand BLM’s ability to utilize competitive processes to offer authorizations for development inside or outside of DLAs. It also addresses the appropriate terms and conditions (including payment and bonding requirements) for solar and wind energy development rights-of-way issued under the regulations. Finally, the rule makes technical changes, corrections, and clarifications to the existing rights-of-way regulations. Some of these changes affect all rights-of-way, while some provisions affect only specific rights-of-way, such as those for transmission lines with a capacity of 100 kilovolts (kV) or more. Onshore Oil and Gas Operations – Federal and Indian Oil and Gas Leases – Onshore Oil and Gas Order Number 1, Approval of Operations (US Bureau of Land Management Regulation) (BLM) (2018 Edition) The Law Library presents the complete text of the Onshore Oil and Gas Operations – Federal and Indian Oil and Gas Leases – Onshore Oil and Gas Order Number 1, Approval of Operations (US Bureau of Land Management Regulation) (BLM) (2018 Edition). Updated as of May 29, 2018 The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) hereby amends its existing Onshore Oil and Gas Order Number 1 (Onshore Order 1) to require the electronic filing (or e-filing) of all Applications for Permit to Drill (APD) and Notices of Staking (NOS). Previously, Onshore Order 1 stated that an “operator must file an APD or any other required documents in the BLM Field Office having jurisdiction over the lands described in the application,” but allowed for e-filing of such documents as an alternative. Praise for the previous edition: “x27What About Law?x27 succeeds where so many legal guidebooks fail. The authors give a measured, succinct tour around key legal issues that is both illuminating for the non-lawyer and refreshingly thought-provoking for those whose undergraduate days are long behind them…By anchoring the book in contemporary cases replete with human interest and a tangible effect on our lives, x27What About Law?x27 skilfully demystifies the law and ably proves its argument. The law is, indeed, all around us – and this book will whet your appetite to find out how and why.” – Alex Wade, The Times Law is one of the few subjects that the school leaver, choosing a degree course, will have very little real understanding of. This book comes to the rescue by clearly setting out what a prospective law student can expect and why a student should choose to study law. This new edition is updated to reflect the reality of studying law today, highlighting changes due to Brexit and reforms to constitutional law. The book covers the compulsory subjects every law student has to study: contract, criminal, property and trusts law, and brings them up to date. With a clear core structure and approach it takes a case from each of these subjects to illustrate legal issues and methodology. The writing style is accessible and has the audience – novices to law – firmly in mind. What About Law? shows how the study of law can be fun, intellectually stimulating and challenging. It introduces prospective students to the legal system, legal reasoning, critical thinking and argument. Written by a team of experienced teachers, this book should be read by every student about to embark on the study of law.Read more
