  • Cracking the Sales Management Code: The Secrets to Measuring and Managing Sales Performance (BUSINESS BOOKS)

    08

Boost sales results by zeroing in on the metrics that matter most

“Sales may be an art, but sales management is a science. Cracking the Sales Management Code reveals that science and gives practical steps to identify the metrics you must measure to manage toward success.”
―Arthur Dorfman, National Vice President, SAP

“Cracking the Sales Management Code is a must-read for anyone who wants to bring his or her sales management team into the 21st century.”
―Mike Nathe, Senior Vice President, Essilor Laboratories of America

“The authors correctly assert that the proliferation of management reporting has created a false sense of control for sales executives. Real control is derived from clear direction to the field―and this book tells how do to that in an easy-to-understand, actionable manner.”
―Michael R. Jenkins, Signature Client Vice President, AT&T Global Enterprise Solutions

“There are things that can be managed in a sales force, and there are things that cannot. Too often sales management doesn’t see the difference. This book is invaluable because it reveals the manageable activities that actually drive sales results.”
―John Davis, Vice President, St. Jude Medical

“Cracking the Sales Management Code is one of the most important resources available on effective sales management. . . . It should be required reading for every sales leader.”
―Bob Kelly, Chairman, The Sales Management Association

“A must-read for managers who want to have a greater impact on sales force performance.”
―James Lattin, Robert A. Magowan Professor of Marketing, Graduate School of Business, Stanford University

“This book offers a solution to close the gap between sales processes and business results. It shows a new way to think critically about the strategies and tactics necessary to move a sales team from good to great!”
―Anita Abjornson, Sales Management Effectiveness, Abbott Laboratories

    About the Book:

There are literally thousands of books on selling, coaching, and leadership, but what about the particulars of managing a sales force? Where are the frameworks, metrics, and best practices to help you succeed?

Based on extensive research into how world-class companies measure and manage their sales forces, Cracking the Sales Management Code is the first operating manual for sales management. In it you will discover:

    • The five critical processes that drive sales performance
    • How to choose the right processes for your own team
    • The three levels of sales metrics you must collect
    • Which metrics you can “manage” and which ones you can’t
    • How to prioritize conflicting sales objectives
    • How to align seller activities with business results
    • How to use CRM to improve the impact of coaching

As Neil Rackham writes in the foreword: “There’s an acute shortage of good books on the specifics of sales management. Cracking the Sales Management Code is about the practical specifics of sales management in the new era, and it fills a void.”

Cracking the Sales Management Code fills that void by providing foundational knowledge about how the sales force works. It reveals the gears and levers that actually control sales results. It adds clarity to things that you intuitively know and provides insight into things that you don’t. It will change the way you manage your sellers from day to day, as well as the results you get from year to year.

  • Safety-I and Safety-II: The Past and Future of Safety Management

    08
Safety has traditionally been defined as a condition where the number of adverse outcomes was as low as possible (Safety-I). From a Safety-I perspective, the purpose of safety management is to make sure that the number of accidents and incidents is kept as low as possible, or as low as is reasonably practicable. This means that safety management must start from the manifestations of the absence of safety and that – paradoxically – safety is measured by counting the number of cases where it fails rather than by the number of cases where it succeeds. This unavoidably leads to a reactive approach based on responding to what goes wrong or what is identified as a risk – as something that could go wrong. Focusing on what goes right, rather than on what goes wrong, changes the definition of safety from ‘avoiding that something goes wrong’ to ‘ensuring that everything goes right’. More precisely, Safety-II is the ability to succeed under varying conditions, so that the number of intended and acceptable outcomes is as high as possible. From a Safety-II perspective, the purpose of safety management is to ensure that as much as possible goes right, in the sense that everyday work achieves its objectives. This means that safety is managed by what it achieves (successes, things that go right), and that likewise it is measured by counting the number of cases where things go right. In order to do this, safety management cannot only be reactive, it must also be proactive. But it must be proactive with regard to how actions succeed, to everyday acceptable performance, rather than with regard to how they can fail, as traditional risk analysis does. This book analyses and explains the principles behind both approaches and uses this to consider the past and future of safety management practices. The analysis makes use of common examples and cases from domains such as aviation, nuclear power production, process management and health care. The final chapters explain the theoretical and practical consequences of the new perspective on the level of day-to-day operations as well as on the level of strategic management (safety culture). Safety-I and Safety-II is written for all professionals responsible for their organisation’s safety, from strategic planning on the executive level to day-to-day operations in the field. It presents the detailed and tested arguments for a transformation from protective to productive safety management.

  • The Challenger Customer: Selling to the Hidden Influencer Who Can Multiply Your Results

    08

From the authors of the internationally-bestselling business classic The Challenger Sale

‘A handbook of practices that will help you get into your customers’ heads, deliver good value, and win the sale’ Daniel H. Pink, author of To Sell is Human and Drive

    —————————————————————

In The Challenger Sale, Matthew Dixon and Brent Adamson overturned decades of conventional wisdom with a bold new approach to sales. Now they reveal something even more surprising: the highest-performing sales teams don’t focus on friendly, attentive customers. Instead, they target challenger customers.

Challenger customers are sceptical, less interested in meeting and ultimately indifferent as to who wins the deal. But they also have the credibility, persuasive skill and will to challenge the status quo that will get a deal to the finish line far more often than customers who are easier to connect with.

Based on new research from thousands of B2B marketers, sellers and buyers around the world, The Challenger Customer shows you how to find these ‘mobilizers’ and equip them with the tools to effectively challenge their own organizations on your behalf. This ground-breaking book is the blueprint you need to make the sale again and again.

  • Questioning Performance: The Director’s Essential Guide to Health, Safety and the Environment

    03

Why directors and senior managers need this book:

    • you have personal responsibilities for health, safety and environment
    • your organisation faces a host of legal requirements and liabilities
    • your company reputation could suffer if you don’t tackle these issues – and you will feel the heat of the shareholder and stakeholder pressure, with bottom line consequences
    • you need to take on board compelling moral and ethical reasons for getting these issues right
    • it’s not just about what’s happening on your home turf – these issues have significant European and global dimensions.

There is no other book out there like this one – this definitive new title gives directors all they need to know about health, safety and the environment. It won’t swamp you with technical detail of legal overkill, and it won’t try to convert to you into an environmental evangelist or safety expert. But Questioning Performance will help senior people to gain assurance and discharge their responsibilities properly by enabling them to ask the right questions, understand the answers and see that they and their board take the best decisions about managing health, safety and environment risks.

Engaging in meaningful dialogue with expert advisers can be tough. This books builds a bridge between directors and expert professionals – employed in-house or consultants – and enable directors to develop effective and productive discussions with health, safety and environment practitioners, managers, trade union officials, safety reps and enforcers.

You may not be passionate about health, safety and the environment, and you may not think of these issues as your top priority – but as an individual, along with your company, you’re legally responsible for managing the risks properly and can be held personally liable for the consequences of failure. Once on the statute books, the new corporate manslaughter law will add further weight to your health and safety responsibilities at least.

      • Training and Assessing Non-Technical Skills: A Practical Guide

Providing a practical guide to the training and assessment of non-technical skills within high-risk industries, this book will be of direct interest to safety and training professionals working within aviation, healthcare, rail, maritime, and other high-risk industries. Currently, each of these industries are working to integrate non-technical skills into their training and certification processes, particularly in light of increasing international regulation in this area. However, there is no definitive guidance to assist practitioners within these areas with the design of effective non-technical skills training and assessment programs. This book sets out to fully meet this need. It has been designed as a practically focussed companion to the 2008 book Safety at the Sharp End by Flin, O’Connor and Crichton. While Safety at the Sharp End provides the definitive exploration of the need for non-technical skills training, and examines in detail the main components of non-technical skills as they relate to safe operations, the text does not focus on the “nuts and bolts” of designing training and assessment programs. To this end, Training and Assessing Non-Technical Skills: A Practical Guide provides an extension of this work and a fitting companion text.

      • ISO 45001 Implementation: How to Become an Occupational Health and Safety Champion

Over two million people worldwide die every year due to work-related accidents and illness, which corresponds to over 6000 deaths every day (International Labour Organisation, 2020). Globally, there are about 340 million occupational accidents and 160 million victims of work-related injuries and illness each year (International Labour Organisation, 2020). Occupational health and safety is a major challenge for many organizations.

Regardless of the size and nature of their business, organizations should protect their people and provide a safe and healthy working environment. They should identify the potential health and safety risks present in their workplace and take appropriate action to keep their workers free from harm. Occupational safety focuses on potential safety hazards that can cause injury. Occupational health, on the other hand, looks at potential health issues such as occupational medicine, occupational hygiene, and primary health care, including the wellbeing of workers.

For organizations that want to implement an occupational health and safety management system based on the ISO 45001:2018 standard but are not familiar with its structure and definitions, it often takes a significant amount of resources to understand the requirements of the standard and plan their implementation. This book provides guidance in establishing an occupational health and safety management system linked to the requirements of ISO 45001:2018. It aims to explain all the requirements of ISO 45001:2018 clause by clause to provide guidance to:

        • Organizations preparing for ISO 45001:2018 implementation

        • Individuals who want to build a career in occupational health and safety

        • Health and safety practitioners and managers who want to improve their occupational health and safety performance

        • Occupational health and safety consultants who prepare their clients for ISO 45001:2018 certification audits

        • Internal and external auditors who audit occupational health and safety management systems.

In addition to the requirements of the standard, this book includes industry best practices, methods, and techniques to address these requirements. While clarifying each requirement of the standard, it also discusses the steps needed to achieve the requirement, areas that auditors may check, and mandatory or voluntary documents that may be maintained or retained to demonstrate conformity with the requirement.
