The Essential Guide to Technical Product Specification. Engineering Drawing
This book has been produced as a companion to BS 8888, Technical product specification Specification, which is the definitive standard for technical product realisation. It offers straightforward guidance, together with pictorial representations, to all practitioners of technical product specification, providing the necessary tools to enable engineers engaged in design specification, manufacturing, and verification with the essential basic information required for specifying a product or component. As BS 8888 is being increasingly adopted in major sectors, particularly in defence contracts, so the need to use BS 8888 becomes more pressing. This publication presents up-to-date information on the technical drawing aspects of BS 8888, in a manner similar to the presentation in the old BS 308, and will help users trained in BS 308 to adapt to the new standards. It includes comprehensive sections extracted from and referenced to international standards relating to linear, geometric and surface texture dimensioning and tolerancing, together with the practice of welding symbology, limits and fits, and thread data. It also includes an illustrated index to all standards referenced in BS 8888.Read more

Computing with Quantum Cats: From Alan Turing to Teleportation: From Colossus to Qubits
Pioneering study of the science behind quantum computing and what the new quantum reality will mean for mankind.
The quantum computer is no longer the stuff of science fiction. Pioneering physicists are on the brink of unlocking a new quantum universe which provides a better representation of reality than our everyday experiences and common sense ever could. The birth of quantum computers — which, like Schrödinger’s famous ‘dead and alive’ cat, rely on entities like electrons, photons or atoms existing in two states at the same time — is set to turn the computing world on its head.
In his fascinating study of this cutting-edge technology, John Gribbin updates his previous views on the nature of quantum reality, arguing for a universe of many parallel worlds where ‘everything is real’. Looking back to Alan Turing’s work on the Enigma machine and the first electronic computer, Gribbin explains how quantum theory developed to make quantum computers work in practice as well as in principle. He takes us beyond the arena of theoretical physics to explore their practical applications — from machines which learn through ‘intuition’ and trial and error to unhackable laptops and smartphones. And he investigates the potential for this extraordinary science to create a world where communication occurs faster than light and teleportation is possible.Read more

Giza: The Tesla Connection: Acoustical Science and the Harvesting of Clean Energy
Reveals how the pyramids of Egypt were sophisticated generators of clean energy.Sharing extensive new evidence and cutting-edge research that the Great Pyramid at Giza was built as an energy-harvesting machine, Christopher Dunn details how the ancient Egyptians were generating clean power for their civilization and reveals how the pyramid builders and the great inventor Nikola Tesla were drawing from the same universal knowledge.
Looking at each part of the Great Pyramid, from the internal chambers to its massive stone blocks to the pyramidion on top, Dunn reveals how the pyramids in Egypt served to stimulate the release and collection of electrons in the Earth’s crust by harmonizing seismic energy while also attenuating the accumulating stresses. Drawing on exhaustive ongoing research by NASA scientists into the phenomenon known as “earthquake lights,” the author shows how the pyramid builders were inspired by this phenomenon and learned to stress igneous rocks similar to tectonic plate movement in order to harvest the resulting electron flow, which also enabled the pyramids to mitigate any impending earthquakes. He looks in depth at recent research that supports the pyramid energy theory, including new explorations of the shafts of the Queen’s Chamber, Russian research on how the Great Pyramid can concentrate electromagnetic energy, and analysis of the scorch marks on the ceiling of the Grand Gallery, which supports the King’s Chamber explosion hypothesis. He also examines the stunning significance of the large void above the Grand Gallery discovered in 2017.
Analyzing the results of extensive acoustic testing and measurements related to specific frequencies within the Great Pyramid, Dunn looks at the vibration and frequency rates found at ancient sacred sites and shows how the pyramids were tuned to the Earth’s frequency. He also includes multiple technical appendices written by experts.
While the pyramids’ sophisticated energy-harvesting abilities are now in disarray and disuse, some remnants of their technologies are still there, waiting to be rediscovered and provide our civilization with an abundance of non-polluting power.

Before Grenfell: Fire, Safety and Deregulation in Twentieth-Century Britain (IHR Shorts)
An account of the systemic failures that led to the Grenfell tower fire. The 2017 Grenfell tower fire in London was a “slow disaster,” the product of a long accumulation of faults and errors that resulted from erroneous assumptions and organizational and governmental decision-making. This book offers a critical perspective on the systematic failures that lead to one of the greatest tragedies in Britain in our time.
Before Grenfell is a poignant and timely analysis of risk, fire, and safety in postwar Britain. Tracing the evolution of state housing policy in relation to multistory housing since the mid-1950s, the book adds to a burgeoning history of the British experience of fire and safety in high-rises and investigates a latent housing crisis in contemporary Britain against a backdrop of increasingly deregulated urban building development. Drawing on public inquiries, newspaper accounts, and oral histories, Shane Ewen details other avoidable disasters, including the Ronan Point tower block explosion in 1968, the Summerland leisure center fire in 1972, and the Bradford City Football Club fire in 1985. The book closes with a powerful chapter on fire safety campaigners, including survivor groups, who are seeking justice for the victims of fire disasters. Before Grenfell aims to exert pressure on policy-makers to act on the lessons of fatal disasters in order to both prevent future casualties and establish a legacy for those who lost their lives.

This new, revised edition of Approved Document B incorporates the June 2022 amendment booklet which takes effect on 1st December 2022.
Approved Document B of the Building Regulations covers fire safety matters within and around buildings. Published in two volumes, Volume 1 deals solely with dwellings, including locks of flats, while this volume – Volume 2 – deals with all other types of building cover by the Building Regulations.

Each volume also states what materials can be used and what British Standards each should conform to, to ensure that they provide the required level of protection.
Main changes made by the 2022 amendments
The changes focus on the following fire safety provisions:
a. Ban of combustible materials in and on the external walls of buildings: Consequential amendments following the laying of the Building (Amendment) (England) Regulations 2022. Updated provisions in Section 12 for residential buildings (purpose groups 1 and 2) with a storey 11m or more in height.

Foundations of Safety Science: A Century of Understanding Accidents and Disasters
How are today’s ‘hearts and minds’ programs linked to a late-19th century definition of human factors as people’s moral and mental deficits? What do Heinrich’s ‘unsafe acts’ from the 1930’s have in common with the Swiss cheese model of the early 1990’s? Why was the reinvention of human factors in the 1940’s such an important event in the development of safety thinking? What makes many of our current systems so complex and impervious to Tayloristic safety interventions? ‘Foundations of Safety Science’ covers the origins of major schools of safety thinking, and traces the heritage and interlinkages of the ideas that make up safety science today.
Features
- Offers a comprehensive overview of the theoretical foundations of safety science
- Provides balanced treatment of approaches since the early 20th century, showing interlinkages and cross-connections
- Includes an overview and key points at the beginning of each chapter and study questions at the end to support teaching use
- Uses an accessible style, using technical language where necessary
- Concentrates on the philosophical and historical traditions and assumptions that underlie all safety approaches
