A Year With My Camera, Book 1: The ultimate photography workshop for complete beginners: Volume 1

£19.00

*This book is printed in black and white and designed to be written in – more details below; please read the whole description if you are expecting a coffee-table glossy book.* The two A Year With My Camera workbooks accompany the online course of the same name from Emma Davies. You can complete the course just from the workbooks, but if you want to join the online community, find the details at AYearWithMyCamera.com. This is Book 1 in a 2 part series. This is a practical workbook, PRINTED IN BLACK AND WHITE, designed to be written in and picked up every week – not a coffee table book to put on your shelf and never look at. The course is designed to be finished, and this is not a glamorous, well-finished book, it is a rough-and-ready *work* book – it’s for people who want to finally understand their camera, not just read about it. Be warned – there are plenty of photographs and illustrations, but they are NOT COLOUR and they are not fine art quality. Most people who open this book breathe a sigh of relief, realising they don’t have to learn everything all at once. It’s a very liberating approach to photography. You will start by building the foundations (chapters 1-6), and then, with a solid base to support you, you will grow your creativity and find your personal style (chapters 7-18). Please use the “Look Inside” feature which is enabled – you can see the workbook nature of the book before you buy, and check it is what you are expecting.

I particularly liked the explanation of the different functions of the camera. While my manual told me what each button/menu selection was it did not tell me what it did or the effect. By knowing what each one did first made it far easier to learn how to use my camera to produce better photos and to widen the options when taking one. Easy to follow with some simple exercises to gain and reinforce knowledge as well as improving confidence. While enjoying learning something new each chapter, I look forward to the next one and the next one knowing they will strengthen what I have already learn and make me feel I am achieving what I set out to do, understand my camera and how to use it’s capabilities. The additional weekly emails mean I can review points at any time without having to have the book with me. While the book alone is value for money the emails are a real bonus

This workbook accompanies the free ‘A Year With My Camera’ course. I have found the book well worth buying. I use it both as a workbook and as a record of my photography development by writing notes in it and sticking in the photos I’ve taken that are relevant to each section of the course. Emma Davies has the ability to teach in a way that is easily understood. The topics are in an order that quickly builds knowledge and understanding of how to get the best out of a camera and to move from auto to manual with relative ease.
I am loving the course and highly recommend the book as an accompaniment or even on its own. However, I would recommend the support and interaction from other students using the AYWMC app alongside the book.

I am 58yrs old and love taking photos, only ever took them on auto settings. I got a good camera for my Xmas 2017, and decided I needed to get off auto and learn how to take proper photos, and not feel like a fraud. I looked at loads of utube videos but I couldn’t get my head around all the information. My next step was finding a book I could learn from, looking on amazon and I came across Emma’s workbook A Year With My Camera, I also joined Emma’s online course which was Free and I have learned so much particularly through having the book on hand to revert back too. The book and course are very easy to follow especially for an oldie like myself, as you can do things at your own pace. I loved how the first book explained easy to follow instruction and decided that I was having book 2 also. I am really glad there was someone out there who was willing to give over all that they have learned,by helping others. I have not had my camera on auto since I started this book. Thank you Emma

I bought this book to use in tandem with part 1 of Emma Davies FREE beginners DSLR photography course. Emma offers a free online photography workshop via email for absolute beginners. I jumped at the course and love it. The books aren’t mandatory but I like to write myself notes and prefer the feel of a physical book. Also feels like giving something back for for finally being taught more about my camera and photography since I started than I ever have. I like to revisit some elements and can do so following my notes made in the book. There’s also spaces for you to print off some homework photos and stick into book. I’ve already replaced some of them with more improved photos than when I started. There is also a few extra projects you can carry out if you wish. All in all I’d highly recommend this book.

Although there was nothing very new ***for me in this book as photography has been my hobby for over 60 years, I was intrigued by her approach.

    It is wonderful!

Her explanation of the technical bits about exposure is outstanding and simple but It is also very thorough. The way she tackles bite size chunks with some practical exercises, check lists and tests is excellent. The composition, light and subsequent chapters give a good basis on which to develop photography skills and make better photographs.

I thoroughly enjoyed working through the book and wished it had been available when I first moved from film to digital photography.

I would recommend this to any beginner who wants to make better photographs and is willing to put some effort into their learning but also to those who love taking photos and are further along their photography journey as this book will really help consolidate their knowledge.

*** actually there was some material new to me in the later chapters! An excellent book!

I have done Emma’s course last year and I bought the book nexuses in the end I would have lost the files from the course. I can review this at any time so it’s useful. The book is large and well designed, and you will be taken step by step from the beginning to the end, with no fancy stuff, but just what you need to get off automatic and start using manual when shooting. Many expensive photography courses will make this super complicated or might glide over some important details. Not Emma, she knows what it’s like to be intimidated by your new DSRL and she gives you all the tool to go shooting with confidence. This is something that should be given to GCSE students who study photography. They spend a lot of time editing in Photoshop but they have no clue of what is aperture, ISO, speed etc! Finally a down to earth manual that even a 10 year old can master. Well done Emma, write more books, you are needed!
