This provides a good basis to start playing chess

Probably a perfectly good book, but the section headings and subheadings are not clear and it’s quite difficult to find specific openings. It’s trying hard to be different and makes itself difficult to use instead. I tried it for a while but hated the format. Just not for me.

Very large and very clear diagrams – unusual for a chess book. Seems to cover many of the most common openings, but doesn’t go in-depth as I would have liked into the plans and principles behind the individual openings. Also, the opening moves are not even bolded or set off from the main body text, which makes them less conspicuous and thus harder to learn. Also doesn’t give the classic diagram of the “ideal” opening for white, which some other books do, and which may have been instructive for the beginner. Takes the opening all the way through until the end of the game – not sure how useful this approach is, but it’s apparently meant to show the reader what endgames or middlegames the various openings can lead to.
Not a bad book overall, but I’m sure there are better out there for the beginner.

I have played chess for a little over 12months mainly against a computer. I purchased “The Complete Idiots Guide to Chess” when I started which was excellent and I purchased this book due to the reviews and as an alternative to the former, hoping for a greater understanding of the opening moves in chess. I skimmed the book initially before getting into each opening in more depth. I bought the the electronic format edition as I wanted to use it on a tablet and set up and save different moves in a chess program on a computer. It has worked so well. The book is easy to work through, the author makes understanding moves simple and I have made steady progress in games I have played. I am not saying that I win more games but those games I now play tend to last longer before I lose. I would certainly recommend both these books to any person starting to play chess if they want to gain a better understanding of the basics.

I really enjoyed reading this book and till use it a a reference. There is plenty you can learn from it. I certainly wouldn’t say it is for dummies, more for players who are starting to get interested in developing tactics. Excellent.

I am a returner to chess at the age of 59 after a gap of 38 years since I was at club level.
The coverage of openings is large enough. The depth that each is taken to is about right to make recal for 5 to 7 moves. The sample games give equal coverage to a good and a bad outcome for each side.
My more regularly playing oponent complains I don’t follow the openings far enough – but as I am now starting to win games this can only be a good thing for me.
