Face Paint: The Story of Makeup
£18.00£20.90 (-14%)
Make-up, as we know it, has only been commercially available in the last 100 years, but applying decoration to the face and body may be one of the oldest global social practices. Lisa Eldridge, one of the world’s foremost make-up artists―with a very large and loyal public following of her own―has written the first real history of the subject. Face Paint will explore the reasons behind make-up’s use, the actual materials employed and manufactured through the ages, the icons that people emulate and how they achieved their effects, the impact on women’s lives and the present and future of make-up from high profile practitioners artists to cosmetic breakthroughs. Along with the glamorous trappings, this is also about women’s history and the ways in which we can understand their story through the prism of make-up.

I love Lisa Eldridge so when I found out that she was bringing out a book about makeup I was ecstatic. It contains exquisite pictures of beautiful vintage makeup and pictures of Lisa’s makeup muses such as Brigitte Bardot and Marilyn Monroe. This is a must have for anyone who loves everything about makeup. It contains everything right back to where makeup originated from to how it has been used since then. Absolutely fascinating and a brilliant coffee table book!

I have watched Lisa’s YouTube videos for years and I finally decided to get her book and it is brilliant for anyone who is interested in make up and wants to learn more about its history. Really informative but also beautiful to look at. The narrative is distinctly Lisa and so it is wonderfully written.
This would make a lovely gift and also a lovely coffee table book.

Learned so much, really well made book that I have on my coffee table. It’s great if you only have a short amount of time and want a flip through something as it’s all in interesting sections, but to be honest I often end up reading it and re-reading it for hours.

Well presented book with lots of information upon the development and use of make up for women.
Pity there weren’t included some basic techniques on application.
I hope my granddaughter appreciates it as much as I did……… although she is still very much more into the application! than reading about it.

I devoured the whole book in one sitting. Very informative and also supportive of a person’s right to put whatever they want on their face. Makeup is art, it advances through science and it requires talent. Don’t treat it lightly. Lisa knows what she’s talking about and it’s clear that she’s also passionate about it.
A knowledgeable and dedicated professional is always a good source.
The book itself is a high-quality print and I display it proudly.

Arrived promptly in perfect condition. This book was a Christmas present for my daughter, so can’t comment on the content. However, she works in the beauty and cosmetics industry and was very keen to have this book, even though she rarely orders books on this subject. I browsed through the book on arrival, it has colourful, good quality pictures and describes the history of make-up and it’s muses. A different era in each chapter such as ancient Egypt or the 1960’s. A lovely gift.
