The other reviews say it all, this is the ultimate book on Hammer Films. To give some idea of the scope of the book, the index is 68 pages long. Some people will be put off paying so much for a book with only 277 pages but Amazon’s page count is wrong, the book actually has 984 pages.

I ordered this book based on reviews……and am promptly sending it back. I feel like I have been mugged! That Amazon say that the book is 200+ pages in length, but reviewers disagree and state book is nearly 1000 pages long, is what lured me in. But Amazon have inadvertantly stated what is correct. Alas, there is nothing new here….approx 600 pages could have been gleaned from any Halliwells who’ who of movies….There are some decent summaries of films, but again, check out any Wayne Kinsey, Bruce G. Hallenbeck or Jonathan Rigby books and you’d be equally satisfied. I am strongly in favour of quality over quantity in this case.

The coverage is indeed exhaustive and very in-depth. However the paper used is not high quality and the photos let it down: only B&W and rather small. A section of large colour photos would greatly improve it.

Absolutely first rate Book which appears to be as comprehensive a History of its subject as it is possible to get. I have watched and followed these Films – particularly the numerous wonderful Horrors – from Sunday afternoon features at my local Cinema in my teens throughout the 60s and since then have watched and rewatched all those I have been able to obtain both on DVD and Bluray.
I have also purchased many Books concerning Hammer over the years but this book provides more of an overall, invaluable, companion piece to those Movies than any other in my collection and contains many facts previously unknown to me.
A hefty price tag yes but I made use of some of my Christmas vouchers and consider the purchase one of the best I have made.
Read it from cover to cover or just dip in and out at your leisure whichever way this is essential reading concerning one of the most influential Film Companies in the UK or elsewhere.

Well this is a tremendous effort, the ultimate Hammer resource. Obviously not something you will sit and read cover to cover but something you can easily dip in and out of.
Structured in A-Z format this has small biographies on even the most minor members of the cast and crew right through to extensive coverage of the studio’s major films and stars. It also contains useful information on dvd/blu ray releases, alternative versions and box office.
Illustrated throughout with many stills I hadn’t seen before and an appendix of the productions that never made it to the screen, this really has everything you could want. I own several Hammer books already including a previous one by the author and was wary of spending so much on another but this really must be the last word on the studio. I’m glad I made the investment and it will take me years to make full use of it. Highly recommended.

It is a great pleasure to handle and consult this book, an impressive achievement by author, Howard Maxford. Specifications for films, actors and production histories are all here. Despite being an obvious fan and aficionado of the subject, like his earlier book on Hammer, Maxford doesn’t sugar coat his comments, with the result that he presents honest opinions where the various films are concerned. Highly recommended.

Since the age of 7 I’ve been a huge fan of Hammer Films and over the last 43 years have collected many books on the Company and their productions. Now here is a book more than worthy of joining any Hammer Fan’s collection. A wonderful encyclopaedic A to Z of everything to do with Hammer Film Productions. The stars, the films, the television series, the production crew, its all here in this one book. Cleanly layed out typography lets you easily scan over each alphabetically labelled section. There is a liberally scattered collection of photographs throughout the book of film stills, posters, lobby cards, star portraits. But this is an encyclopaedia and it does what it is supposed to do. The illustrations take second place. Each film title carries a well informed, detailed and interesting production history. The actors aswell are well detailed in both their collaborations with Hammer as well as other work they did away from the Studios. All in all this book is a labour of love by author Howard Maxford.
More recently we have had the wonderful Peveril Publications written by Wayne Kinsey giving us fans exactly what we want with unlimited rare images, film stills and photographs of props as well as information on these classic horror films crammed into each book about Hammer. Simply excellent.
Now as a companion to join these books in your collection comes the Howard Maxfords perfect reference book on Hammer Film Productions. I have seen the odd spelling error and typography error on a few of its pages. But in a book of this size and with the sheer amount of information it carries within its pages it is only the smallest of complaints.
Yes, it is a big book both in weight and price, but don’t be put off. You will be well rewarded investing in this magnificent publication.
Hammer Fans rejoice for once again ‘Hammer House of Horror has risen from the Grave!’
