“The Brexit you’ll never hear about from a British negotiator. An important book.” – ROBERT PESTON, ITV Political Editor
As a close aide to Michel Barnier, Stefaan De Rynck had a front row seat in the Brexit negotiations. In this frank and uncompromising account, he tells the EU’s side of the story and seeks to dispel some of the myths and spin that have become indelibly linked to the Brexit process. From the mood in the room to the technical discussions, he gives an unvarnished account of the deliberations and obstacles that shaped the final deal and offers a rare and fascinating insight into how a major negotiation is run.

Forget or rather put aside the Times, Telegraph etc and have a look at this. This is the detailed and inside story of how Brexit was done from the EU point of view. Clear to the point and actually in a way tragic as it was all predestined to happen. From an EU perspective but not unquestioning – interesting also on issues such as the backstop… Definitely a key contribution to our understanding of how we got to here in 2023.

This is quite a dull book but I thoroughly recommend it to anyone who believes any of the myths still being peddled by Brexiteers. The ignorance and arrogance of the ERG and those in thrall to them make uncomfortable reading. Why on earth did Britain enter into “negotiations” with the EU without setting any objectives, or strategy, and without recognising that the EU too had a position to defend and that consequently were not going to allow us to cherry-pick benefits enjoyed by EU members without accepting any of the obligations that go with membership? Thank goodness at time of writing (March 2023) common-sense has prevailed and we may at last be on the way to regaining some of the respect that we have lost over the last seven years.
