Luna Loves Dance is the third book in the Luna series and the second that I have reviewed after Luna Loves Art back in May.
Luna is a very sweet little girl who is normally jolly and happy. Today is the day of her dance exam and she is excited and nervous. Unfortunately, when she tries to do the moves she keeps on falling over and has to watch as all the other students get their certificates.
She thinks she will never be a real dancer, so her parents show her lots of other people who dance but don’t have certificates.
Luna Loves Dance is a beautiful young children’s picture book that is adorned with some very colourful and bright illustrations. The plot of a little girl failing her exam and needing some encouragement from her parents is rather lovely and it was wonderful to see so many people of all ages and abilities dancing.
The message about not giving up on your dreams and not letting one moment in your life stop you from doing what you love came across strongly. I am sure little children will love this book and quite possibly will be showing off their own dance moves too.

Beautiful book, ordered as my daughter was lucky enough to be going on a school trip to meet the author and illustrator who were signing their book. She loves the book and the lovely message they wrote for her 🙂

Luna love dancing, with her mum, with her dad, and when she goes to dance class she’s excited to try doing a special move the teacher shows her. The whole class is having a dance exam and if Luna follows the right steps she will be able to pass, but when she tries once, twice and even three times, Luna trips and falls. ‘Luna Loves Dance’ is a hardback book, a little bigger than A4 in size and is filled with some lovely and very colourful illustrations and text on some thick matt pages. The hardback cover has a texture a little like art canvas which I like.
After failing her exam Luna doesn’t think she’ll ever be a real dancer. She ends up going to different situations where she dances, but she never thinks she’s a real dancer until something happens at the end. I like how this story goes. Luna feels how so many children have often felt, a complete failure at something. I remember feeling very bad at failing something myself when I was young and the feeling that I would never be good enough. While she’s at the carnival, a dance show, etc. Luna ends up dancing along with the music, but it isn’t until someone points something special out to her, that Luna ends up feeling like a dancer again.
I like the story and the message inside, but the illustrations really bring this to life so much more than just the words alone. I just love how colourful everything and everyone looks, especially in images like the carnival which is just popping with colour! There is a lot of detail to see on each page and I love how Luna and the others all look and the expressions they have. There’s an extra special double page towards the end too, which I really enjoyed as it unfolds to create a longer picture and some lovely words in the story.
Overall I enjoyed this story, it’s simple and I really like how Luna and the others look and the message of not giving up despite failures. I also really love the way this book looks and I know it’s a book I would have enjoyed looking at as a child due to all the detail on the pages and how colourful they look. I’m not sure if all of the text is perfect, I think the story feels a little odd at some point when moving from one point to another, but it might just be me, and the overall story is an encouraging and happy one.

My daughter enjoyed Luna Loves Art, so we were excited to read Luna Loves Dance.
Luna loves to dance and is about to take her very first dance exam. On the day however, Luna can’t perfect the end of her routine despite many attempts she can’t quite land the last jump and doesn’t pass.
I really liked this book. I liked how despite Luna being quite down on herself for not passing her dance exam, her family were really supportive and reassuring and helped her get over her disappointment. The illustrations in this book were beautiful and colourful with lots to look at. I think this book is a lovely way of addressing with kids that sometimes things may not go your way, or just because you’re not necessarily the best at something, or don’t have awards or certificates it doesn’t mean you have failed.

The hardback is a lovely quality big book (for those who want measurements to make sure it fits on theshelf, it’s about 10″ wide x 11″ tall). And the artwork is absolutely beautiful; vibrant, colourful and cute.
In this story Luna finds it tricky to get a dance right, while her classmates seem to get it. It shows children that it’s ok to struggle and fall sometimes, but that they shoudn’t give up because eventually they’ll get there, just like Luna does!
4/5 only because the simple story didn’t wow us as much as other children’s books have in the past. But 5/5 for the illustrations.
For dance fan parents, the book can provide talking points where you can show your child what certain dance moves are like the Crazy Legs, the Charleston and Heels, Rockaway and the Scooby Doo.

This is a lovely series, with a lot hidden that children won’t even notice.
Luna gives children a chance to see different situations, and in this case, to see a girl who adores dancing feel the sting of failure (at her dance exam) and have to rebuild her self-esteem and love for dancing up again, with the help of her family.
Her family – separated parents, from different cultural backgrounds. With colour and love and music and joy. A book full of the same, and the protagonist shows children that not only might you sometimes not ‘win’ at everything, but that this is okay, and it shouldn’t stop you doing what you love.
For ages 3-8.
