Enemies by day. Electric tension by night. Welcome to small town chaos.

Inheriting a rundown bar from the father who abandoned me should be my chance to start over.

Instead, it puts me directly in the path of Hudson Fitzgerald—single dad, small town royalty, and the most insufferable man I’ve ever met. He’s rich, broody, and way too good-looking for my peace of mind.

Oh, and he wants me gone.

But I didn’t come here just to tuck my tail and run away. I came to prove I’m not the hot mess everyone thinks I am. Even if that means going head-to-head with Hudson every single day.

He thinks I’m chaos in a crop top. I think he’s a control freak with a stick where the sun doesn’t shine. But beneath all that tension is something else. Something electric.

And when he kisses me? Let’s just say, for a man who claims he doesn’t do messy, he sure knows how to make a mess of me.

I was only supposed to be here long enough to fix up my bar. I never meant to fall for the man who runs this place like he owns it.

But in a small town like this, love has a way of sneaking up on you.

Fans of enemies-to-lovers, forbidden kisses and grumpy billionaires won’t want to miss this small town romcom packed with laugh-out-loud banter and smouldering tension!

What a fantastic read, the story flows perfectly. Both Skyler and Hudson were easy to like characters as was Autumn.

The ultimate grumpy/sunshine with a bit of single dad romance and spice thrown in.

A whole host of new characters, a brand new island location – the perfect way to recover from the end of the Salinger series.

Skyler is chaos, free spirited and has her insecurities but a brand new start gives her the chance to change her life as she inherits the bar her Dad ised to own, but there is one block in the road…Hudson Fitzgerald

Hudson is rich, owns most of the island, has to be in control and loves his family more than anything and he wants the bar.

The contrast between the two MC’s is perfect and they complement each other in ways they don’t realise to start with. Skyler and Hudson help each other to navigate a few twists and turns along the way, but these things are never easy and it hinges on whether they can let their own demons go in order to make it work.

It’s not just the main characters you fall in love with, I’d love to read more about Autumn, Hudson’s sister, and would love Jessee to get a HEA…and most importantly…everyone wants to know what happened with Eileen and Mylene!!!

It’s a great story I really like it. Two opposite people falling in love. So sad about the little girl not talking but she is getting there

Must Have Been Love is the first (1st) book in the Fitzgerald series but it actually starts with a novella with Autumn and Parkers’ story.

After her father has passed away Skylar inherits the Salty Dog, a rundown bar on Liberty Island. She decides to go to the island to see what the bar is like and to feel closer to her father. She is estranged from him since her sister Lee’s wedding. This is also her chance to prove to herself and everyone else that she is able to be responsible grown up. Then there is Hudson, the rich, grumpy and single father. He wants Skylar gone from the island and wants to buy the bar.
    And so their story starts.
Like all of Carrie’s other books, once you pick this book up, you want be able to put it down and like me, will finish it in a day.

MUST HAVE BEEN LOVE by CARRIE ELKS ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Must Have Been Love by Carrie Elks is the first (1st) Book in Carrie Elks’ Fitzgerald series (though there is a preview novella available introducing the Fitzgerald family & covering Autumn and Parker’s story).

After her estranged father bequeaths Skylar Brown a rundown bar on Cape Liberty Island she decides to visit long enough to fix it up and sell it. This is her chance to prove to herself and everyone else that she can be responsible and not the unreliable mess everyone thinks she is. Things get off to a rocky start though when she’s confronted by Hudson Fitzgerald – Uber rich, grumpy, devastatingly handsome and small town royalty – within minutes of arriving.

Short of caring for his young daughter, trying to restore his family’s legacy is the only thing Hudson has time for, and if that means making sure the island’s only pub is up to his exacting standards then so be it. He’s not prepared however for the chaotic, beautiful whirlwind he encounters. Yes she’s beautiful, yes he’s inextricably drawn to her but he can’t let feelings get in the way of his plans.
Sparks fly between the pair and frustration and stubbornness rule the day but soon they are struggling to deny their mutual attraction……

Firstly I have to SHOUT FROM THE ROOFTOPS… READ THIS BOOK! This book is DELICIOUS! Everything about it is mouthwatering. It’s the kind of page turning book you read in one sitting because you can’t bear to put it down. It’s the perfect length (around 370 pages), it has ALL THE FEELS, and the cover….THE COVER! It’s so pretty!! ☺️ O.K….. I’ll calm down now. If you haven’t worked it out yet this book is a very easy 5 star read…wait, why can’t I give it more? It deserves more! 🥹

Carrie continues her 5 star run of emotionally charged, heartwarming, must read, small town romances. Her ability to dig deep into the emotional motivations of her characters is unmatched and I defy you to not get invested in them. Skylar is a bubbly, chaotic, stubborn mess and the dichotomy between her and stiff, formal, unbending Hudson makes for an addictive read. Carrie writes about characterful small towns that you just know you’d love to visit, with interesting, flawed characters you wish you could meet in real life. I am sometimes wary of third act break up stories but this one wasn’t overdone, believable and heart wrenching – I loved it. The two main characters whilst chalk and cheese at first glance blend beautifully, and their slow burn relationship (if rapid no strings hook up) was paced perfectly. This book isn’t saccharine sweet, there’s plenty of angst thrown in and the plot rolls along at the perfect pace. There’s no unnecessary filler and it isn’t rushed. Ayda is a gorgeous addition to the story and Mylene & Eileen are hilarious! Liberty is a character all of its own and is described so perfectly that you can picture yourself there. I am so looking forward to meeting more of the Fitzgerald family and the population of Liberty. As a bonus, one of my favourite bands is highlighted throughout so that was an extra special treat for me.

Thank you to Carrie for an early copy of this book. All comments are my own, honest, unbiased opinion.

I always know I am going to get a solid and fantastic romance read when I pick up a Carrie Elks book, this is no exception. It put a spark back in me to get back to reading more of Carrie’s books as I’ve read a lot so far but want to read them all!

This has a lovely opposites-attract theme, with a buttoned up controlling businessman (Hudson) meeting roll-where-the-wind-takes-you woman (Skyler). The banter and snarking but underlying tension is great and sprinkled with some humour. I was grinning pretty often throughout the book and giggled/snorted in a few places. It was getting me all fuzzy on the insides, completely enjoying it and drawing me in!

There’s also moments that really tug on the heart strings. Some tugged in a warm way – anything to do with family just gets to me and this one has a really good family element to it on various levels – and some just broke my heart a little in sad ways and good ways, making me cry, before putting me back together.

Hudson is such a great MMC and I just loved him as a character, uptight but for his own reasons that slowly wear down. Skyler is such a love too, someone who needs to just see herself more clearly but is a delight. And omg…Ayda, Hudson’s daughter, just absolutely squeezed my heart especially some moments later on in the book 😭

Overall a great romance story with open-door scenes. It’s kind of a hotter Hallmark story but in the best way. Definitely recommend if you want a just a very well done contemporary romance that you can lose yourself in and end with the happiest heart.

The blurb draws you into this brilliant story from page 1 to the epilogue.

Hudson is the brooding bossy alpha hole, and his character develops beautifully throughout the book. Skylar is a wee bit lost and without direction until the island.

I love the beautiful and descriptive storytelling by Carrie that makes us both love and hate the characters, and enjoy the twists and turns as the story unfolds.

I cannot wait to see the next book in this fantastic series. Amazing work as always, from one of my favourite authors
