I didn’t expect much more than a simple overview from this book, but it came with a lot more that wasn’t so easy to digest. It’s essentially an unquestioning mouthpiece of the USDA Dietary Guidelines, including all the lovely contradictions. Of the 2005 revision, the author says it was ‘pretty clear that the original food pyramid hadn’t done its proposed job of teaching most Americans how to choose foods that provide sufficient nutrients without piling on the pounds.’ And how have Americans done since 2005?

The entire book is based around the pyramid responsible for America’s ridiculous obesity rate, and desperately clings on to old, now defunct, myths about about carbohydrates, fat, cholesterol, thermodynamics and calorie-counting. The explanation of the role of insulin was laughable. There’s absolutely no mention of its critical role in weight loss, and we’re fed the same old tired idea of exercise and calorie-counting to lose weight, because it’s proven to be so effective after 100 years of non-success. But it’s easier than changing our stubborn views and looking to contemporary research isn’t it?

White bread, potatoes and pasta are referred to as ‘perfectly healthful foods,’ and we’re recommended to eat 6-11 servings from the cereal group, with only 5-9 from the vegetable/fruits group. A single serving includes 1 slice of bread, 1/2 cup of pasta, or 5-6 crackers. Even when I was eating a junk diet I would’ve struggled with 6-11 servings at that level. It’s no wonder that even overweight people who are genuinely making an effort to lose weight fail horribly despite the misery they have to live through on these diets.

Perhaps worst of all is the random advertisement for fluoridation and preservatives, and the repeated recommendations of non-fat dairy, including 0% fat milk (fat soluble vitamins aren’t going to be digested with extra sugar now, are they?), vegetable oils and margarine (this is just ignorance), and even the suggestion that statins are a viable option for good health.

I give the book two stars because it’s worth reading if you want to know why we’re all dying of degenerative diseases and can’t even stop our kids from becoming obese, let alone overweight. It also has a few useful, scientific facts mixed in with the Guidelines information.

I wanted a comprehensive book that contained all the up to date and relevant information about nutrition right down to molecular level and written in a readable and understandable manner. I am studying Sports Therapy and this book is an invaluable addition to my course text books. An excellent reference guide.

    I love this book,

I’ve always been interested in getting to know the value & nutritive elements contained in each food. This UK edition is actually quite thorough and enables you to learning more about the heatlhyness or danger of some foods or nutrients.

I would definately recommend it to anyone.

    Kind regards,

    Christina
