The Adoption Experience: Families Who Give Children a Second Chance
£15.80£17.10 (-8%)
This is a book of real life stories of adopters which takes the reader through every stage of the adoption process starting with the moment when they decide that adoption is the right option for them to the stories of adoptees brought up by adoptive parents.
In between, the book looks at all the different types of adoption that are carried out by all sorts of families from all sorts of children of every race and age and with every kind of problem. They range from babies who are only days old when they are taken into an adoptive family to teenagers with a multitude of psychological and physical problems. The book looks at both the success and failure of these adoptions.
Its aim is to inform and enlighten professionals, adopters, potential adopters and all those whose lives have in some way been touched by adoption or want to know more about it.
In 15 chapters it includes more than 70 real life stories which are all told from the heart sometimes in a moment of crisis and sometimes at a time of joy. They are not analysed, they are true stories about how it feels to be at the centre of adoption. All the stories, which have been recounted over the past 10 years, are reflective of adoption today in Britain.
The book also includes a chapter on the legal aspects of adoption and a further chapter of useful information and addresses.

As a single adopter going to panel next month so many books I have read or researched are written by professionals ‘baffle’ with language and are detached from the actual heart and soul of the subject, having never went through the process themselves – whilst thinking about the child’s needs is important it is also important to think about us – the adopters and how we feel – I agree we often seem overlooked and forgotten. Not with this book which is written by Adopters for Adopters – it is slightly out of date as it talks about ‘Form F’ and not PAR and also is updated to 1999 – BUT the feelings, emotions and the actual honestly and stories from the readable and structured chapters jump off the page and it doesn’t matter it’s older the emotions remain the same. The only drawback is it does have a short chapter on single adopters – mixed in with couples who are same sex adopters as it talks about the ‘we’ a lot – but I read this and ‘nodded’ along I highlighted sections with the intention of going back. It’s the high’s the lows the warts and the all – it isn’t always a ‘happy ever after’ but it’s Honest and to the point. Read it if you are in the process now an dit’s a book without rose tinted glasses so be prepared for the truth and the warts and all. I bough mine second hand for £3.00 – it was immaculate and would recommend to any person couple or family thinking f adopting.

This book opened the door to the reality of adoption for me. Whilst I have gained a lot of information from professionals in the field, nothing has been more powerful than hearing what it is like “straight from the horses mouth”. I liked the way the chapters are put together to provide the different perspectives, each article was short and easy to read and it included the stories where things hadn’t always turned out so well. The book is easy to read in short bursts if necessary although I admit I couldn’t put it down until I had read it from cover to cover.

I read this and I don’t think it helped me at all. My wonderful son came to us 12 years ago, it would have been a better use of my time to read cook books because he eats like a horse!

This book has everything you might need to know & more in one book. It’s particularly good to see things from the adopters point of view. If you only buy one book re adoption, get this one. Oh, & good luck, it’s a long & rocky road by the looks of it.

This book did more to prepare us for adoption than any other – reading real people’s accounts of assessment, approval and parenting made everything clear.
What is really valuable about the short personal accounts is that there is no rose-tinting of the realities – but no pessismistic dismissal of the rewards. It gives a multifaceted, inspiring account of parents who won through to give kids another chance at family.

This was a useful and very easy read although could now do with updating to include some anecdotes from families who have been through the process more recently within a more modern system.
