£0.90

“Though I’m not really a pet psychic, I can speak to animals…”

Jolene Hartgrave, here! I went from being a top dog lawyer to a hangdog pet psychic in the ruff part of town, all thanks to a pesky curse that gave me the gift of gabbing with animals.

But my luck is finally looking up. I’ve teamed up with a hottie police officer and his snarky, lie-sniffing German shepherd to catch criminals.

From a murdered fashion icon spinning a web of lies to the killed curator of an occult museum, I’m doggedly helping the police bring the bad guys to justice.

But there’s a catch.

I’ve got a huge secret of my own–one the police can never find out about.

Can I solve the case and build a new life, or will I end up behind bars myself?

A great series of books. Didn’t think I was going to like it and then spent two massive sessions reading the lot. Excellent range of characters, believable interactions and good story lines. If you like a bit of magic as well, you will enjoy this series.

I’m quite hard to please when it comes to cozy mysteries. I find a lot of the tropes irritating and often give up half way through. I was surprised that I thoroughly enjoyed Jolene’s adventures. She is not your typical protagonist, having had a huge fall from grace (though it’s not her fault) and lost everything. When we first see her she is really struggling to survive. There is a huge divide between privileged rich magic users and the poor who are outcasts and often on the fringes of society; shifters in particular are despised and find it hard to get work or any financial or medical aid. The island runs entirely on magic and Jolene has none apart from her ability to speak to animals, making simple daily tasks very difficult. This makes her more real and I really felt for her, though her prickly behaviour and her constant arguing with Daisy the dog was slightly irritating at times. I loved the animals, especially the Gary the cockroach, and the comments from the various animals were often very entertaining. The murder mysteries are never entirely obvious, though I guessed the culprit in book one pretty early on. The world building is fantastic and the main plot running through the books about the shifter mob boss and underground city is really interesting and pretty unique. Recommended.

I got really irritated at the way Jolene constantly “teased” Daisy the dog. She thought it was “amusing”. I didn’t. Teasing animals constantly is abuse.
The books need editing, there were several grammar errors i.e . couple days, or couple plates etc. Surely that should be “couple OF”.
Several words that didn’t make sense i.e. “deets” which I assumed should be an abbreviation of details.
Some words missing in sentences in odd places throughout the books too.
Not sure what Ramen is, although I think it must be liquid based as the characters were always “slurping ” it all through the books. It sounded horrible, not sure I would want to try it.
To be honest, I didn’t like the character of Jolene at all, although I liked the concept of someone who could talk to animals. This set of stories could have been a lot better with more though and editing.

It was unusual and kept me enthralled. Each story had the same thread running through it. From the humans living above to the shifters down below.
