Language Signs and Calming Signals of Horses: Recognition and Application
This practical book helps you interpret and connect the physical signals that horses display in response to their environment. These signals are evident in the everyday actions, gestures and attitudes that horses communicate to each other, but are often so subtle that they can go unnoticed by humans. This book aims to rectify that, offering horse lovers and equine professionals an opportunity to gain a unique insight into their ‘horse’s world’.
Key features:
- includes detailed description of language signs of domestic horses, with a special emphasis on calming signals
- includes 275 pictures to visualize various language signs, calming signals, behaviour sequences and facial features
- presents communication ladders to show how a horse responds to incentives in his environment, and what signals he uses at certain moments
- contains tips on the use of the communication ladders and calming signals to improve the socialisation, training and wellbeing of your horse
- considers equine psychological stress from an environmental perspective, providing a valuable alternative to the current common clinical perspective.
After reading this book you will be more astute in spotting calming signals, displacement activities, stress signals and distance-increasing signals, and better able to see which stimuli your horse can handle and which he cannot. This means you will know what to do to calm your horse before his stress rises to an unmanageable level. Language Signs and Calming Signals of Horses is both fascinating and important reading for any equine veterinary practitioner, student or nurse, as well as horse owners and trainers.

Everyone Here Spoke Sign Language: Hereditary Deafness in Martha’s Vineyard: Hereditary Deafness on Martha’s Vineyard
From the seventeenth century to the early years of the twentieth, the population of Martha’s Vineyard manifested an extremely high rate of profound hereditary deafness. In stark contrast to the experience of most Deaf people in our own society, the Vineyarders who were born Deaf were so thoroughly integrated into the daily life of the community that they were not seen―and did not see themselves―as handicapped or as a group apart. Deaf people were included in all aspects of life, such as town politics, jobs, church affairs, and social life. How was this possible?
On the Vineyard, hearing and Deaf islanders alike grew up speaking sign language. This unique sociolinguistic adaptation meant that the usual barriers to communication between the hearing and the Deaf, which so isolate many Deaf people today, did not exist.

PublisherIntroduction:
Thanks for purchasing this eBook, as you show a genuine interest in the world of Airbrushing “Aquatic Animals”. Back when I was learning to draw aquatic animals, I liked watching the wonderful scene inside the aquarium, of my pet“Goldfish”. At first I was amazed at the features and colors, but when I kept seeing more details as it moved, an idea struck inside my head. I thought about adding some colors to my drawing. I kept the drawing for a while, since I’m still learning to paint in acrylic, and after a few months of browsing some of my files, I saw my drawing again. I decided to paint it in colors with acrylic using an airbrush, since by that time I already knew how to use an airbrush. I painted it with a very satisfied result, and later on I saw it hung on the wall of my best friend house. I was so glad!
I’m not encouraging you to give away your masterpiece, rather the point I’m making is that with your airbrush, you can make limitless fantastic art. If only you could imagine this tool’sgreatness with its capabilities. So, I made this eBook for you to learn the basics of airbrushing that every beginner needs to know and practice to master it. The Last Empire: The Final Days of the Soviet Union
BY THE AUTHOR OF CHERNOBYL: HISTORY OF A TRAGEDY, WINNER OF THE BAILLIE GIFFORD PRIZE 2018WINNER OF THE PUSHKIN HOUSE RUSSIAN BOOK PRIZE 2015
On Christmas Day 1991 Mikhail Gorbachev resigned as president of the Soviet Union. By the next day the USSR was officially no more and the USA had emerged as the world’s sole superpower. Award-winning historian Serhii Plokhy presents a page-turning account of the preceding five months of drama, filled with failed coups d’état and political intrigue.
Honing in on this previously disregarded but crucial period and using recently declassified documents and original interviews with key participants, he shatters the established myths of 1991 and presents a bold new interpretation of the Soviet Union’s final months. Plokhy argues that contrary to the triumphalist Western narrative, George H. W. Bush desperately wanted to preserve the Soviet Union and keep Gorbachev in power, and that it was Ukraine and not the US that played the key role in the collapse of the Soviet Union. The consequences of those five months and the myth-making that has since surrounded them are still being felt in Crimea, Russia, the US, and Europe today.
With its spellbinding narrative and strikingly fresh perspective, The Last Empire is the essential account of one of the most important watershed periods in world history, and is indispensable reading for anyone seeking to make sense of international politics today.

The Western Front: A History of the First World War
A SUNDAY TIMES BOOK OF THE YEAR
A TELEGRAPH BOOK OF THE YEAR‘A tour de force of scholarship, analysis and narration . . . Lloyd is well on the way to writing a definitive history of the First World War’ Lawrence James, The Times
‘This well-researched, well-written and cogently argued new analysis . . . will undoubtedly now take its rightful place as the standard account of this vital theatre of the conflict’ Andrew Roberts, author of Churchill: Walking with Destiny
_________________In the annals of military history, the Western Front stands as an enduring symbol of the folly and futility of war.
However, as bestselling military historian Nick Lloyd reveals in this highly-praised history – the first of an epic trilogy — the story is not one of pointlessness and stupidity, but rather a heroic triumph against the odds. With a cast of hundreds and a huge canvas of places and events, Lloyd tells the whole tale, revealing what happened in France and Belgium between August 1914 and November 1918 from the perspective of all the main combatants – including French, British, Belgian, US and, most importantly, German forces.
Lloyd examines the most decisive campaigns of the Great War and explains the unprecedented innovation, adaptation and tactical development that have been too long obscured by legends of mud, blood and futility, drawing upon the latest scholarship on the war, wrongly overlooked first-person accounts, and archival material from every angle. Conveying the visceral assault of the battlefield with vivid detail, Lloyd ultimately redefines our understanding of a crucial theatre in this monumental tragedy.
_________________‘Excellent on detail . . . Lloyd’s book will be cherished by military history buffs’ Max Hastings, Sunday Times
‘It is the best modern single-volume history of war on the Western Front and is likely to remain the standard account for some time’ Jonathan Boff, The Spectator

Bloody Aachen: The First German City Ever Besieged by the U.S. Army (Americans Fighting to Free Europe)
A fascinating account of the first German city ever besieged by the U.S. Army and the monumental battle that took place amongst its ruined walls. This book would be perfect for readers of George Feifer, Stephen E. Ambrose, and James Holland.
Aachen saw some of the fiercest fighting of the Second World War. Through the determined defense of their city the citizens of Aachen held off the oncoming American forces for six weeks, giving the Nazis time to mobilize their troops for what would become the Battle of the Bulge. Had it not been for dogged resistance of these men and women the last great German offensive in the West might have never occurred, potentially ending the war in Europe could have ended six months and saving the lives of thousands.
Yet, Charles Whiting’s remarkable book, Bloody Aachen, is more than an account of a military operation. Through interviews with German and Dutch participants in the battle he builds an in-depth picture of who the defenders of the city were, informing us that many in this Catholic city were opposed to the Hitler regime and remained behind — against orders and against odds — determined to defend their homes, unwittingly aiding their Nazi enemies as they did so.
‘Whiting writes clear, hard-driving prose’ Kirkus Reviews
This book should be essential reading for all interested in this monumental siege which truly encapsulates the complex motives of the men and women who fought through the course of the Second World War.

Meantime: The gripping debut crime novel from Frankie Boyle
*THE INSTANT SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER*
*Shortlisted for the Bloody Scotland Debut Crime Novel of the Year*
How do you solve a murder when you don’t have a clue? Frankie Boyle’s gripping crime debut novel, Meantime, is a hallucinogenic ride through Glasgow as one man seeks justice for his friend’s murder.
Glasgow, 2015. When Valium addict Felix McAveety’s best friend Marina is found murdered in the local park, he goes looking for answers to questions that he quickly forgets. In a haze of uppers, hallucinogens, and diazepam, Felix enlists the help of a brilliant but mercurial GP; a bright young trade unionist; a failing screenwriter; semi-celebrity crime novelist Jane Pickford; and his crisis fuelled downstairs neighbour Donnie.
Their investigation sends them on a bewildering expedition that takes in Scottish radical politics, Artificial Intelligence, cults, secret agents, smugglers and vegan record shops.
Meantime is a thrilling detective story set against the backdrop of post-referendum Scotland. Frankie Boyle’s compelling debut novel is a tale of murder and revenge, and of personal and political loss.
‘A darkest noir, unputdownable crime novel that swerves and surprises, with a gut-punch ending. I loved it!’ Denise Mina, author of The Long Drop

But Mattie soon realizes that several clues to her future have been right in front of her this whole time . . .BOOK 3: CHRISTMAS AT THE LITTLE VILLAGE SCHOOL
Teacher Lydia is most definitely not full of Christmas spirit. It’s going to be a tricky term when she’s tasked with putting on a Christmas show with the pupils from her small Yorkshire school for the local elderly people’s home. The only distraction from choreographing sugar plum dance routines and reindeer costume malfunctions is her dishy colleague Jake. Even as a teacher, she’s still being taught a couple of lessons.
