Veiled Silence
Neglected and unloved her whole life, Kendra’s only dream was to have a family of her own—a home, a husband who loved her, and a house full of children.
So when she meets Gideon Maddox, she cannot believe a man as powerful, handsome, and wealthy as him would ever look at her twice, let alone ask her to marry him and have his baby.
After three years of trying, the test finally reads pregnant, and she’s overjoyed…but before she can tell him about their Christmas miracle, her joy quickly turns to sorrow when her husband reveals that he only married her for convenience.
Shattered, Kendra carries her precious secret into the cold, winter’s night, never expecting the man who broke her heart to care enough to find her.
Gideon
As a child, Gideon Maddox knew nothing but duty and abandonment. Raising his three brothers, he became the head of a billion-dollar empire, one he’d bleed and kill for.
But cold, hard cash doesn’t keep him warm or produce an heir, so he marries the sweet, naïve, and utterly guileless Kendra.
To him it’s a marriage of convenience, so when she fails to produce an heir, and his dealings with the Mafia turn sour, he does something truly terrible.
And when Kendra runs, taking a precious Christmas gift with her, Gideon realizes something far more important than all his power and wealth has slipped through his fingers.

As a dedicated reader of Eve Black’s work, I went into this one, like, “I know what’s coming.” But Eve was like, “No, you don’t; I’ve got a new gear for you.” The writing was stunning, the storyline perfection, and the characters were so well-written you feel like you know them. My advice? Don’t start it unless you have time to finish it because you’ll miss that appointment, your family will go hungry, or your boss will write you up as a no call/no show.
This book has it all: emotionally distant alpha male whose beast turns gentle kitten for his wife, a stand-up-for-herself (finally) wife whose badassery starts with a silent walkout out as soon as the words of betrayal leave his mouth, and a HEA that melts your heart.
This trope can be a delicious dish if you season it right, and Eve is a literary Michelin star chef. The trajectory of the story follows a well-worn path of the trope, but Eve forges a new road through it. Same destination, but new journey.
The betrayal was hard-hitting. It broke her, but it broke him open, and ultimately it was the catalyst that allowed them to heal together as one, transcending their three years of a convenience marriage where Gideon took her for granted. (RIP three scheduled weekly “intimate times” that are super sexy but come only with an agenda) Some readers need long, lengthy grovels and changed behavior. I just need the words, and when he finds her again, he gives her words of honesty and love and vulnerability in a way I could never have expected he would. But those of you who need actions/changed behavior to achieve the right kind of grovel, just wait; it’s there, big time. I love that Eve wrote both.
Her writing style is, as always, flawless and stylistically artistic like a prima ballerina dancing Swan Lake. She’s one of those writers who has a distinctive style but doesn’t recycle it for every book, so it might be the same stage, but it’s new steps. This woman can weave words into a blanket you’ll want to sleep under each night.
I was really impressed with the depth of her story, too. Just like curvy women give you that extra you want to hold on to, Eve’s plots have that something more that makes the story take up space in the best way. She can serve you the most salivating alpha male, have you hating him in the next breath, and in the end, have you begging, “Can I have one of those, please?” But she doesn’t neglect a narrative framework that provides the conflict that motivates the alpha to change his ways and realize what he has. I love the metaphor of the beast within him (that gives strong PNR vibes for those who like that trope, and it works even for those of us who don’t), and the references to it advance the story and his evolution as a man changed in a way that just words and actions couldn’t. In the end, the cliché, “tame the beast” isn’t cliché here. It’s fact. This O/P man beast know his master. Watching his wife bring that beast to heal is one of the best parts of the book.
So, if you’re looking for classic Eve – the well-developed story, the well-developed characters, and the betrayal before the satisfying grovel – then you need this book. And if you’re looking for something within the tropes of marriage of convenience, betrayal and grovel, and OWD, then stop, buy, and enjoy because this one’s a can’t miss.

Veiled Silence, the second novella in this dark Christmas serious, focused on the oldest Maddox brother Gideon and his wife Kendra. We get the prologue at the beginning to explain how they met and then the first chapter starts after 3 years of marriage so you don’t get the rushed insta love feel that some shorter stories have.
Gideon is your typical alpha billionaire, emotionally stunted workaholic. He constantly has a continuous battle within himself on whether to allow himself to feel anything for his wife. Kendra is your typical sweetheart, when she loves she loves with her whole heart. Which is why she ignores the cold treatment of her husband.
After Gideon has a bad day at work, we get to the gut punch/betrayal, which was heartbreaking. I really didn’t think that he would be able to redeem himself, and he didn’t really grovel “per se” but he did explain himself and then made it his mission in life to make his wife happy. Their reconciliation was believable for me. Especially since it’s a novella.
The only reason I gave it a 4 and not a 5 was because there’s a big question that was not answered by the end of the book. I’m hoping it will be answered in one of the two upcoming books in the serious but I was a little disappointed with that big loose end.

Book 2 of the Maddox brothers was just as good as the first. This is a marriage in trouble story featuring Gideon and Kendra. Gideon treats his wife Kendra horribly. It all comes to a head one night when he says some horrible and cruel things to her about their marriage. Kendra walks out the door with nothing. Gideon finally realizes that he loves his wife after he lost her. When Gideon finds her he explains to her that he loves her and why he treated her the way he did. While this doesn’t excuse his behaviour it does help explain it. Gideon shows Kendra with his actions that he loves her because his words can’t be trusted anymore. If you love a marriage in trouble story you’ll love this novella.

This is the second book in dark and silent night series. Loved it. Gideon was a very cold and cruel man in the beginning towards his warm and loving wife. Definitely recommend.

Love these series of books about the Maddox Brothers.
Gideon pursued Kendra for the sole purpose of using her to get a heir … she of course was not aware of this.
I genuinely didn’t like Gideon, and I know that we are supposed to, so that just shows how awesome his character is written.
Kendra is no push over, she loves deep and hard, but when she’s pushed too far, she knows her worth and stands up for herself.
Lovely little redemption arc.
OW drama.
Grovelling.

I love a marriage in crisis story and boy is this a doozy! Gideon is an absolutely cold hearted and emotionally stunted alpha-hole. A force of nature in his guided throne of power, it is delicious watching his fear of Kendra bring him to his knees. I really enjoyed this addition to the Dark & Silent series.

My only little issue is the plot device of blaming the woman for inability to get pregnant. Infertility can be a problem with both partners either individually and combined. I understand the frustration but it leave me feeling a bit icky. Something to keep in mind if any discourse on this is a triggering topic.

This is the 2nd book of the Dark & Silent Night series, a series of four books, each being written by four different authors.
Veiled silence did not disappoint. This story is focused on Gideon Maddox the eldest sibling of 4 boys, the head of the Maddox empire. Gideon has spent the majority of his life being the pseudo parent to his brothers, building a powerful and influential business that incorporates the underworld.
Encouraged by one of his brothers, Gideon decided he need to find an unassuming woman to become his wife and provide him with an heir. In walks Kendra, who Gideon swiftly sweeps off her feet, marrying shortly after they met.
Kendra, believing their relationship is a great love affair has been trying to conceive a child for the past three years. Finally, she is going to be able to tell Gideon they are expecting.
Gideon arrives home where he delivers a verbal tirade to Kendra, informing her that he only married her so he could get an heir. This has Kendra acknowledging to herself what she knew deep down, that all was not as she thought in her marriage and explains Gideon’s systematic behavior over the past three years.
Kendra flees their home, and Gideon is left in the ruins when he realises his feelings for Kendra and the horrendous error he has made.
Gideon does grovel to get Kendra back and you can feel the love he has for her.
There is of course the expected OW drama in the name of Isabella. Isabella is a self-entitled mafia princess who is of the view Gideon has always belonged to her. A good dose of Karma is delivered to Isabella.
Veiled Silence gives us cameos of the brothers and their significant others from the 1st book in the series and those to come in book 3 and 4.
If you are familiar with Ms Black’s work you will want to read this. If you have yet to read Ms Black’s work, take the plunge, you won’t be disappointed.

Enjoyed the story very much, it was a nice, quick read and a nice palette cleanser. Off to read the next One now.

Kendra and Gideon’s story is good, but it could be rounded out a bit better in some places.
Solely Kendra’s composure and love for Gideon is the cause, that he gets a second chance. – I liked that about Kendra. It takes a lot of inner strength and the ability to forgive and look ahead. Quiet consistency, without much drama, is sometimes much more painful for the perpetrator. Gideon experiences this firsthand.
I’m somewhat ambivalent about Gideon. I’m not sure if he would have really looked for Kendra if he hadn’t opened the package. – He did absolutely nothing for three days. I would have liked a bit more depth here, as it leaves a somewhat bitter aftertaste. In his defense, however, I must say that I really liked his performance at the Winter Gala. – He should never have undermined the value of his own wife, regardless of whether he’s afraid of his own feelings or not.

I so enjoyed this story. And I love a happy ending. Julie not Keith, he used his name when he made my account 😂
