The epic enemies-to-lovers hockey romance from Rachel Reid, streaming on Crave in Canada and on HBO Max in the U.S.

“The book that got me into hockey romance.” —NPR’s Weekend Edition

Nothing interferes with pro hockey star Shane Hollander’s game.

Now that he’s captain of the Montreal Voyageurs, he won’t let anything jeopardize that—definitely not the sexy rival he loves to hate.

Boston Bears captain Ilya Rozanov is everything Shane’s not. The self-proclaimed king of the ice, he’s as cocky as he is talented. No one can beat him—except Shane. Publicly, they’re enemies. Privately, they can’t stop touching each other.

The smart thing to do? Walk away, once a few secret hookups turn into a struggle to keep their relationship out of the press. The truth could ruin them both. But for Shane and Ilya, secrecy is soon no longer an option…

Heated Rivalry is easily one of my favourite reads of 2025. After hearing a TV series was being made back in August, I picked up the book—and I’m so glad I did. I’m not a big sports fan, but you absolutely don’t need to be to fall head-over-heels for Shane and Ilya. In fact, I found myself completely absorbed in the hockey scenes, especially when the two faced off on the ice.

This is a genuinely spicy romance—emotionally charged, physically electric, and far deeper than I expected. Shane and Ilya are wonderfully multi-faceted, their relationship tender, complicated, and intensely moving. The side characters shine too: Hayden, Shane’s parents, and the wider cast all feel fully realised and memorable.

I was hooked from start to finish, desperate to see how everything would work out. I’ll definitely be reading the other standalones in the series. Now… onto the TV adaptation everyone keeps raving about!

I really enjoyed Shane & Ilya’s story, it’s a great enemies to lovers read. The chemistry between them is there from their first meeting and they say there is a fine line between love & hate and that’s certainly true in this book. I really enjoyed the softer moments between them as we could see the relationship developing. Great read!

Heated Rivalry by Rachel Reid is a fast-burn on the spice but slow-burn on the romance. It perfectly balances humour, heart-break, and heat. Ilya and Shane’s rivals to lovers story is filled with tension and deep emotion, as they struggle with their feelings. The story brilliantly captures the pining, the secret love, and the bittersweet moments of realisation.
When we first meet Ilya in Game Changer, he’s set up as a jerk, but in Heated Rivalry, we get to see his softer side – though he’s still cheeky! But that’s all part of his charm.
Shane’s struggle with his identity is heart-breaking, especially his shame when he first realises he’s attracted to men, he has so much awful, internalised homophobia. He is super gay though, and some of his observations about and attraction to other men before he even comes to the conclusion that he’s gay himself, like when he describes Scott as an angel, are hilarious.
Their realisation that they’re in love with each other is beautifully heart-breaking, with such intense pining as they each believe it could never work. The tuna melt scene, where they both start to consciously realise their feelings, is a highlight for me. Their turning point, when Ilya agrees to spend time at the cottage with Shane in the off-season, is perfection – it makes me cry every time. 😭
Shane’s parents, Yuna and David, are wonderfully accepting and supportive. Yuna is a standout for me, I love the moment when she offers Shane a lamp; it’s such a classic mum thing to do. They provide the perfect contrast to Ilya’s awful father and brother, highlighting what a supportive family looks like.
We get an HFN at the end of Heated Rivalry, but don’t worry, the HEA comes through in The Long Game.

I REALLY wanted to love this after all the hype these two get about being the best hockey couple ever but much like the 1st in the series I only really enjoyed the last few chapters when the characters felt more “real” and less like just a series of sex scenes

The journey that this book took me on was joyous and heartbreaking. I constantly thought about how difficult and terrifying it was for the guys to spend so many years grabbing what little time they could to keep their secret. It must be torturous for them both.

I gave 3 stars to the first book in this series (Game Changer) because I felt that the writing in the third person made it very 2 dimensional and not very emotive.
As far as I’m concerned I couldn’t disagree with myself more. This book, this story was beautiful! And the emotions really came through. I felt everything with these characters, their conflict and struggles about their feelings for each other. Shane coming to terms with his sexuality and Ilya coming to terms with his feelings towards his on ice enemy. The torment of having to live a very public life carrying a secret came across really emotionally in the book and as a reader I was right there with them feeling their struggles.

I am definitely going to be reading the rest of the series.

This book is fantastic. It’s an easy and enjoyable read. It’s funny practically the entire time, you might cry a few times, and you might get emotional a few times. A truly great book.
