The Intruder
Casey’s cabin in the wilderness is not built for a hurricane. Her roof shakes, the lights flicker, and the tree outside her front door sways ominously in the wind. But she’s a lot more worried about the girl she discovers lurking outside her kitchen window.
She’s young. She’s alone. And she’s covered in blood.
The girl won’t explain where she came from or loosen her grip on the knife in her right hand. And when Casey makes a disturbing discovery in the middle of the night, things take a turn for the worse.
The girl has a dark secret. One she’ll kill to keep. And if Casey gets too close to the truth, she may not live to see the morning.
In this taut, deadly tale of survival and desperation, #1 New York Times bestselling author Freida McFadden explores how far one girl will go to save herself.

Positives:
Great plot twists! Actually had my mouth open! The “reveal” of who is who midway through was very well done.
Interesting and realistic character development throughout the book.
Weaves real life issues into a story that, for the most part, keeps you turning the pages!
Negatives:
The story is a rather dull read to begin with. The scene is set and continues to be set for almost half the book, leaving you waiting for the next part.
For me, as a man, I found the men in the book to be not very believable. (Although, I’m sure women will find the reverse true in books authored by men!). You can tell the author thought “Better shove a few men in” 😂.
Unfortunately, the ending was, in my opinion, terrible.
If you like me, want a concise ending with all the ends of the story wrapped up – don’t read this book!
You are left wondering what happens to the main character. Personally, I hate these kind of endings.

Freida Mcfadden is one of my go to authors, but I’m sorry to say I was so disappointed with this book. I had trouble getting into the story, I found it quite boring and predictable compared with most of her other books and it lacked her usual spark and originality.
by Good fun game. Entertaining and fun
Wonderful read, absolutely love this author so talented never fails, would highly recommend

Review: The Intruder by Freida McFadden
Rating: ★★★★☆ (4/5 Stars)
Freida McFadden has rightfully earned her reputation as one of the most prolific and satisfying psychological thriller writers working today, and The Intruder proves exactly why. This novel is a taut, non-stop ride that delivers everything fans have come to expect: breakneck pacing, palpable suspense, and a twist that truly earns the description “devilish.”
The story immediately plunges us into an isolated setting where former teacher Casey is seeking refuge in a remote cabin during a violent storm. When a blood-soaked girl appears outside her window, the question shifts from survival against nature to survival against human danger. McFadden expertly uses this claustrophobic scenario to ramp up the tension, blurring the lines between victim, protector, and predator.
The pacing in The Intruder is its greatest strength, living up to the “great pacing” observation. Told through short, punchy chapters, the narrative constantly alternates perspectives and timelines, forcing the reader to piece together the truth alongside Casey. It’s constructed like a house of cards: every chapter adds pressure, and you know the structure is destined to collapse in spectacular fashion. This is a true one-sitting thriller; once you start, putting it down is not an option.
Of course, no Freida McFadden novel is complete without the signature, genre-defining surprise, and The Intruder delivers a twist that is as meticulously plotted as it is shocking. It’s a moment of masterful misdirection where you realize the assumptions you’ve been making are completely wrong. The final act is where McFadden shines brightest, executing a reveal that makes you want to immediately flip back to the beginning to see how you missed the clues—the hallmark of truly amazing work.
If you’re looking for a psychological thriller that prioritizes high stakes, relentless suspense, and a plot that leaves you genuinely gasping, The Intruder is a necessary read. It’s a reminder that Freida McFadden consistently performs at the top of her game, making her arguably the best thriller writer in the world today. Highly recommended for any fan of domestic suspense.

Wow!!! Freida McFadden has done it again! The Intruder is one of those books that grabs you from the first page and doesn’t let go until the very end. It’s creepy, tense, and full of that signature McFadden suspense that keeps you saying, “just one more chapter.”
The story centers around a family whose seemingly perfect life starts to unravel when a mysterious stranger shows up and things quickly spiral out of control. The pacing is fast, the chapters are short, and the sense of unease builds with every page. I had so many theories, and every single one of them was wrong. The twist at the end genuinely shocked me (in the best way).
What I love most about Freida’s books is how readable they are – they feel effortless, yet she always manages to surprise you. This one had me on edge the whole time, and I finished it in a single sitting.
If you’re a fan of psychological thrillers with unreliable characters, plenty of secrets, and jaw-dropping twists, The Intruder is an absolute must-read.

Brilliant read! Don’t start it unless you have time as you won’t be able to put it down. Really interesting storyline and great plot. Characters were definitely interesting dealing with the cruelty dealt with by others, and their struggles to get on with life. I would have liked the ending to carry on to the conclusion I was routing for.

This is my 1st read from this author & what a start.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book & finished within 4 days.
I really didn’t see the twist of the plot coming but the book kept me wanting to get to the next chapter to see what was awaiting for me. For me I got truly immersed in the characters & was rooting for things to workout for them.
I would recommend this book & can’t wait to start my next read by this author.

A storm rolling-in adds to this tense thriller. A troubled teen finds help with someone who has a more troubled past than her own. What a unique way to tell this story – BRAVO ! Thoroughly entertaining. The twists thrown in happened at just the right places. There is an ending but it definitely left me wanting more; maybe a sequel ??? Definitely one of my favorite Freida McFadden’s books !!!

In need of repair, Casey is worried about how her isolated cabin in the woods will fair in the predicted hurricane. The giant tree outside, already swaying in the light winds, would crush her home if it fell. Doing the best she can to prepare, she sees someone outside her window. It turns out to be a girl, who is covered in blood with a secret she refuses to reveal, clutching a knife. After discovering something in the girls’ backpack, Casey has more to worry about than the raging storm outside
