Written throughout her life but only discovered after her death, by her great-great nephew, Christopher Rush, Elspeth’s (known as Aunt Epp) journal was never intended for publication but her style of writing and the subject matter she covers nonetheless reaches a universal audience. Riley Rochester Investigates Vols 1 – 3: Victorian Crime Mysteries
Death of a Debutante In 1870s London, Scotland Yard’s famous Detective Department is still in its infancy. Lord Riley Rochester, younger son of a marquess, is one of its first detective inspectors.
When a debutante is murdered in the home of Lord Ashton, Riley’s vengeful superior hands him the investigation, hoping to see him fail. As Riley and his sergeant, Jack Salter, delve into the circumstances surrounding Emily Ferguson’s death, it quickly becomes apparent that his own class expect him to exonerate its members from all blame. But the murder was committed at a society event, and Riley’s conscience won’t allow him to ignore the evidence that points to one of the guests—or hosts—being the killer.
Everyone has something to hide and tempers fray as a heatwave holds London in its sweltering grasp. When a second death occurs, Riley fears he may be incapable of preventing a terrible miscarriage of justice. Will he and Jack manage to uncover the true identity of the killer without endangering those whom Riley holds most dear…
Death of a Courtesan Detective Inspector Rochester and his sergeant, Jack Salter, are called to a high-end brothel to investigate the murder of one of its inhabitants. Her throat has been cut from after the customers had left for the night and the doors had been locked, and no one admits to hearing a thing.
As Riley and Jack delve into the beautiful young victim’s background and the reasons for her fall into prostitution, an increasing number of suspects with compelling reasons for wanting her dead emerge. Riley is astounded to discover that his nemesis, Chief Inspector Danforth, is one of the brothel’s regular visitors. He was there on the night of the murder, spent an hour alone with the victim and must be viewed as a suspect. Riley could be forgiven for revelling in Danforth’s downfall after all the insults he has suffered at the chief inspector’s hands, but his concern is for the reputation of the Detective Department and he does all he can to shield Danforth from public derision.
Unsurprised by the depths of depravity some men willingly sink to in order to find gratification, Riley is unprepared for the damage that could be done to the reputation of his own family if he doesn’t get to the truth. But at what cost to his personal ambitions…
Death of a Prosecutor Inspector Riley Rochester’s latest case strikes close to home. When his friend, notable barrister Sir Robert Glover, is stabbed to death outside his chambers, there are far too many suspects. Sir Robert’s family, those he worked with, shadowy figures from his past and every resentful criminal he ever prosecuted. What’s worse, the case is inextricably linked with a Scotland Yard colleague’s rather slipshod investigation, and Riley must be diplomatic in his dealings with his superiors and fellow officers if he’s to get to the truth.
Riley and his sergeant, Jack Salter, take to the task with their customary professionalism – although Riley’s judgement is clouded by nervous anticipation of Amelia Cosgrove’s response to his proposal of marriage and by the sudden decline in his nephew’s health. Knowing that if his nephew dies Riley will become his brother’s heir, he must come to terms with the fact that he will one day be the Marquess of Chichester whilst simultaneously trying to solve the hardest case of his career to date…Read more

Nine non-fiction, police/crime books followed including three on Scotland Yard’s First Detectives and the first history of the British Women Police, a subject on which she became an authority. This led to her writing extensively in the Police Press in support of women police when they were having a difficult time during integration and to acting as advisor and participant in the BBC4 TV documentary, A Fair Cop: One Hundred Years Of Women Police, screened in March 2015.
Joan has also written short stories, radio plays (some historical) and radio documentaries. Her crime fiction includes one modern novel, Death In Perspective, and seven Victorian mysteries featuring the charismatic Scotland Yard Detective Ernest Best.

The Erotic Adventures of a Victorian Doctor: Stepsister’s Same Sex Sadism
When Doctor Damian Thatch’s sadism is extended to his stepsister, Edith, in a taboo encounter on her visit to his London consulting room, it awakens her desire to treat her maid in a similar manner. Edith’s maid, Annie, while otherwise excellent in carrying out her duties, is ill tempered and disrespectful, so Damian has Edith bring her to him for a consultation. His suggested cure for such behavior in a maid is spanking and birching, which he demonstrates to his enthusiastic stepsister.
Edith takes particular delight in the control she has over Annie when she strips her maid for punishment, but she soon realizes that she wants more. Rather than simply punish her maid, Edith wants to take her as a man might. But the only female body she has ever touched has been her own, and what if Annie resists such treatment from her mistress?
Annie senses the sadistic urges developing in her mistress, and is afraid that Edith will be severe in delivering punishments. She appeals to Damian for a medical solution to help control her behavior, but a maid cannot afford the services of a London physician. Damian, however, tells her of an alternative form of treatment that a mistress might perform on her maid, setting up Edith’s first time lesbian encounter with Annie bound and spread on Damian’s consulting couch.
This is an adult only work of Victorian erotica fiction involving bondage, spanking, buggering, sadism, masochism (BDSM) , and first time lesbianismRead more

The Victorian City: Everyday Life in Dickens’ London
The nineteenth century was a time of unprecedented transformation, and nowhere was this more apparent than on the streets of London. In only a few decades, London grew from a Regency town to the biggest city the world had ever seen, with more than 6.5 million people and railways, street-lighting and new buildings at every turn.
Charles Dickens obsessively walked London’s streets, recording its pleasures, curiosities and cruelties. Now, Judith Flanders follows in his footsteps, leading us through the markets, transport systems, sewers, slums, cemeteries, gin palaces and entertainment emporia of Dickens’ London. The Victorian City is a revelatory portrait of everyday life on the streets, bringing to life the Victorian capital in all its variety, vibrancy, and squalor. Discover how the birth of the popular press nurtured our taste for murder and that Jack the Ripper was actually a work of pure Gothic horror fiction crafted by cynical Victorian newspapermen. Twin sisters Keziah and Tilly Lovell are identical in every way, except that Tilly hasn’t grown a single inch since she was five. Coerced into promoting their father’s quack elixir as they tour the country fairgrounds, at the age of fifteen the girls are sold to a mysterious Italian known as `Captain´.
Theo is an orphan, raised by his grandfather, Lord Seabrook, a man who has a dark interest in anatomical freaks and other curiosities … particularly the human kind. The A-Z of Victorian Crime
Few things are more evocative of Victorian Britain than its criminals; they are, together with railways, gas lamps and swirling fog, vital ingredients in any Victorian melodrama. The truth, however, was often stranger, more thrilling and more horrifying than fiction. In this book, four eminent crime historians reveal the realities of this aspect of Victorian life, illuminating not just the criminals and their victims, but also the policemen, forensic scientists and others who rubbed shoulders with the nineteenth-century underworld. Notorious crimes – the Road Hill Murder, the Balham Mystery and Jack the Ripper – stand alongside long-forgotten, neglected cases; the most shocking and terrifying cases appear next to everyday horrors, some stunning and some merely sad. This unique work of reference deserves a place on every true crime reader’s bookshelf.Read more

Victorian Buxton & The Queen Of Scots Quest
A fictional, romanticised, Victorian tale about a small but significant town in middle England. A place known these days as Buxton began its existence as the hidden away, mountain top, Roman province of Britannia. Which started out as a simple encampment based around it’s natural, warm springs.
A congenial ride out to the pleasantly enhanced town for a tranquil get together, quickly evolves to reveal an unforeseen mystery of royal creation. A rare and demanding quest that requires mental agility and bold determination to solve.
The long forgotten task soon becomes the joint responsibility of two, young, Victorian companions. Who venture forth and travel around the town and beyond its limits. Carefully directed to local destinations of interest and intrigue set across the wild and bewitching Derbyshire peaks. Where the promise of answers lie cold and dormant, obscured from their view by centuries of historical happenings. The avid friends must delve into a painful past and reach for understanding to progress.
Alis and Ivor’s visit takes them up into the hills that surround the town and leads them on an unusual mission in the name of Mary, Queen of the Scots. Cryptic instructions left 300 years earlier by the hapless Queen, takes them on an esoteric trail of fortune.
During its existence Buxton has not only been a Roman outpost with soothing waters, it has been a distant Tudor village with healing liquid properties, as well as a fine Victorian Spa Town. Providing elegant, summer time, luxury bathing for the landed gentry of the age.
Their escapade presents itself in 1894, during a period of time when Buxton enjoyed its apex of glamorous indulgence and sophisticated excellence. Since then the vast majority of the Victorian property in Buxton, and its associated history, has been protected. The land, most of which still belongs to the current Duchess and Duke of Devonshire, has been guarded over the years against any great changes. The Duke, his wife and their predecessors have been developing and watching over Buxton, one way or another, for many hundreds of years.-Inspiration-
A View From A WindowThe author of this book lived for many years at –
No.1 Pavilion Mansions,
Hartington Road,
Buxton.
Which has an interesting view through a large, stone, bay window on the side elevation of the substantial Victorian property. A view that encompasses the passage of Buxton’s history through the ages.
To the right of the window a neglected lane passes by. Beneath the moss and debris, a cobbled road once built by Roman soldiers (AD43-410) runs down from higher to lower Buxton. Which brought to mind horse drawn chariots, rolling down the hill towards the towns health giving springs.
Directly ahead lies The Old Hall Hotel (1573). Which was built to house Mary Queen of Scots. Who will have walked out of the Hall onto the dusty road. Absorbing the scenery and deeply breathing in the clean mountain air. Seeking to find some solace for her persecuted soul.
Behind The Hall, the Devonshire Dome (1789) presents itself as a magnificent example of Victorian engineering and ingenuity. Once famed for being the largest unsupported dome in the world. Which indicates the quality of architects once drawn to the town.
On the far side of the Dome The Palace Hotel (1863) stands wide. A place where Victorian gentry would have walked and talked and paraded their finery.
Yonder, the caressing hills frame the view. Tree covered hills that have been there forever which turn from green, to orange, to the bright white of snow in the winter.
The Romans, the Tudors, and the Victorians all sought out Buxton. Which caused the author to spend her evenings looking out of the window, that captures 2,000 years of Buxton history. Wondering what else the people from bygone days, did with their time whilst in Buxton.Read more

- Take on The Poet’s Chair by remembering more poems, songs, or rhymes than any other player
- Perhaps you wish to Pass the Slipper? Then close your eyes as players pass a small object and on the count of ten, guess who is holding it.
- Be careful not to break the rules, or you may have to shake hands blindfolded, pretend to be a parrot, or pay another silly forfeit to account for your blunder.

Voices from the Asylum: West Riding Pauper Lunatic Asylum
Almost forgotten by time, tucked away beyond the sight of the passerby, there is a little piece of old England, which was for many years a forgotten wilderness. If it were not for a weather-beaten plaque on the gatepost few would realise that beyond the rusted gates there lies, in unmarked paupers’ graves, 2,861 former patients of the once formidable Menston Asylum. To be admitted to a lunatic asylum in the nineteenth century was fraught with danger, and in many cases meant a life sentence hidden away from society. It is estimated as many as 30 per cent of the asylum population was incarcerated incorrectly and up until 1959 there was no form of appeal. Looking into the faces of the long dead, the forgotten former inmates of this once bustling institution, it is impossible not to feel a certain sadness at their plight. Abandoned by an intolerant society and their families these people all had one thing in common, when death came there was no one to shed a tear or collect their remains. They were given a pauper’s funeral and forgotten, until now.Read more

Rites of Passage: Death and Mourning in Victorian Britain
In Rites of Passage, acclaimed historian Judith Flanders deconstructs the intricate, fascinating, and occasionally – to modern eyes – bizarre customs that grew up around death and mourning in Victorian Britain.
Through stories from the sickbed to the deathbed, from the correct way to grieve and to give comfort to those grieving to funerals and burials and the reaction of those left behind, Flanders illuminates how living in nineteenth-century Britain was, in so many ways, dictated by dying.
This is an engrossing, deeply researched and, at times, chilling social history of a period plagued by infant death, poverty, disease, and unprecedented change. In elegant, often witty prose, Flanders brings the Victorian way of death vividly to life.

Inventing the Victorians
Suppose that everything we think we know about ‘The Victorians’ is wrong? That we have persistently misrepresented the culture of the Victorian era, perhaps to make ourselves feel more satisfyingly liberal and sophisticated? What if they were much more fun than we ever suspected? Matthew Sweet’s Inventing the Victorians has some revelatory – and entertaining – answers for us.
As Sweet shows us in this brilliant study, many of the concepts that strike us as terrifically new – political spin-doctoring, extravagant publicity stunts, hardcore pornography, anxieties about the impact of popular culture upon children – are Victorian inventions. Most of the pleasures that we imagine to be our own, the Victorians enjoyed first: the theme park, the shopping mall, the movies, the amusement arcade, the crime novel and the sensational newspaper report. They were engaged in a well-nigh continuous search for bigger and better thrills. If Queen Victoria wasn’t amused, then she was in a very small minority . . .
Matthew Sweet’s book is an attempt to re-imagine the Victorians; to suggest new ways of looking at received ideas about their culture; to distinguish myth from reality; to generate the possibility of a new relationship between the lives of nineteenth-century people and our own.
