• Muhammad and the Empires of Faith: The Making of the Prophet of Islam

    02

In Muhammad and the Empires of Faith, Sean W. Anthony demonstrates how critical readings of non-Muslim and Muslim sources in tandem can breathe new life into the historical study of Muhammad and how his message transformed the world. By placing these sources within the intellectual and cultural world of Late Antiquity, Anthony offers a fresh assessment of the earliest sources for Muhammad’s life, taking readers on a grand tour of the available evidence, and suggests what new insights stand to be gained from the techniques and methods pioneered by countless scholars over the decades in a variety of fields. Muhammad and the Empires of Faith offers both an authoritative introduction to the multilayered traditions surrounding the life of Muhammad and a compelling exploration of how these traditions interacted with the broader landscape of Late Antiquity.

  • ISLAM THE MISUNDERSTOOD RELIGION

As I wrote this book over the years I did not entertain the hope that it would elicit
such a warm reception and appreciation, And when it went to the press over and over
again I thanked God and felt grateful to the readers who took so much interest in the
    contents of this book.
I was, however, beginning to feel that in the future this book need not be republished,
For, in my view, we had better no way some thing positive about Islam itself in the
context of the various fields of life it embraces, and the positivity and the supervisory
character that its law enjoys with regard to practical life, as I have attempted in the books
appearing after the present one, instead of limiting our efforts to defending it against the
various doubts given currency to by its enemies in order to confuse and throw us on the
    defensive.
But when I read the orientalist Mr. Wilfred Cantwell smith’s book “Islam in Modern
History”, and found that the author had in three places referred to this book of mine in
words so angry and disparaging that came very near to openly calling names. I decided
that the book that had roused the anger of a rancorous crusader to such an extent must
remain in circulation and be published over and over again.
All my thanks are due to Allah; His Grace alone brings succor

  • The Path to Jannah: Guidance from the Quran and the Prophet’s Biography on the Principles, Actions, and Mindset that Lead to Paradise in the Hereafter (islamic books)

    03

    The Path to Jannah

Throughout history, people from different walks of life have attempted to portray the unique attributes of Paradise in paintings, films, and literature—yet all that we have seen (or imagined) in this worldly life is nothing compared to what Paradise actually is. As conveyed to us by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), the last and final prophet of the heavenly revealed religions, it is a place that “no eye has ever seen, no ear has ever heard of, and nobody has ever thought of.”

Despite the mystery surrounding this topic, the Glorious Quran reveals numerous details about the final abode of the believers (called “Jannah” in Arabic), providing rich descriptions of its magnificent bounties and clear guidelines for passing the tests of this life that will grant one entrance to Allah’s Eternal Gardens.

Written in accessible language for those wishing to know more about the Islamic concept of Paradise, “The Path to Jannah” is a book that takes readers on an insightful journey into some key Quranic verses and authentic sayings of the Prophet (PBUH) that we should all be aware of in order to understand and fulfill our true purpose in life, which is something that can only be achieved by taking the path of goodness that Allah SWT promises will lead to success in the Hereafter.

“The Path to Jannah” is an uplifting and beneficial read for anyone who wishes to cultivate the key traits associated with the inhabitants of Paradise, with practical tips and advice to help all those striving to attain the ultimate reward.

Some of the questions answered in this book include:

    • Who are the people who pass the tests of this worldly life and end up in Paradise?
    • Will they remember anything about the worldly life of this dunya?
    • Will they be reunited with their loved ones?
    • How do the angels assist the believers in the Hereafter?
    • What does Islam say about the experience of death?
    • Is Paradise the same for all people—or are some more privileged than others?
    • Will it be possible to see the Creator in the Hereafter?
    • Is faith alone sufficient to grant someone entry to Paradise?

Suitable for teens and adults alike, “The Path to Jannah” provides a complete roadmap to help sincere seekers of the truth reach the final destination of Paradise.

  • Islam and the Problem of Black Suffering

    01
In his controversial 1973 book, Is God a White Racist?, William R. Jones sharply criticized black theologians for their agnostic approach to black suffering, noting that the doctrine of an ominibenevolent God poses very significant problems for a perennially oppressed community. He proposed a “humanocentric theism” which denies God’s sovereignty over human history and imputes autonomous agency to humans. By rendering humans alone responsible for moral evil, Jones’s theology freed blacks to revolt against the evil of oppression without revolting against God. Sherman Jackson now places Jones’s argument in conversation with the classical schools of Islamic theology. The problem confronting the black community is not simply proving that God exists, says Jackson. The problem, rather, is establishing that God cares. No religious expression that fails to tackle the problem of black suffering can hope to enjoy a durable tenure in the black community. For the Muslim, therefore, it is essential to find a Quranic/Islamic grounding for the protest-oriented agenda of black religion. That is the task Jackson undertakes in this pathbreaking work. Jackson’s previous book, Islam and the Blackamerican (OUP 2006) laid the groundwork for this ambitious project. Its sequel, Islam and the Problem of Black Suffering, solidifies Jackson’s reputation as the foremost theologian of the black American Islamic movement.

SHORTLISTED FOR THE BAILLIE GIFFORD PRIZE 2017

‘An eye-opening, well-written and very timely book’ Yuval Noah Harari

‘The best sort of book for our disordered days: timely, urgent and illuminating’ Pankaj Mishra

‘It strikes a blow…for common humanity’ Sunday Times

The Muslim world has often been accused of a failure to modernise and adapt. Yet in this sweeping narrative and provocative retelling of modern history, Christopher de Bellaigue charts the forgotten story of the Islamic Enlightenment – the social movements, reforms and revolutions that transfigured the Middle East from the early nineteenth century to the present day. Modern ideals and practices were embraced across the region, including the adoption of modern medicine, the emergence of women from purdah and the development of democracy.

The Islamic Enlightenment looks behind the sensationalist headlines in order to foster a genuine understanding of Islam and its relationship to the West. It is essential reading for anyone engaged in the state of the world today.

  • Travelling Home: Essays on Islam in Europe

    08
In our age of globalisation and pandemic, how should we react to the new Islamophobic movements now spreading in the West? Everywhere the far right is on the march, with nationalist and populist parties thriving on the back of popular anxieties about Islam and the Muslim presence. Hijab and minaret bans, mosque shootings, hostility to migrants and increasingly scornful media stereotypes seem to endanger the prospects for friendly coexistence and the calm uplifting of Muslim populations. In this series of essays Abdal Hakim Murad dissects the rise of Islamophobia on the basis of Muslim theological tradition. Although the proper response to the current impasse is clearly indicated in Qur’an and Hadith, some have lost the principle of trust in divine wisdom and are responding with hatred, fearfulness or despair. Murad shows that a compassion-based approach, rooted in an authentic theology of divine power, could transform the current quagmire into a bright landscape of great promise for Muslims and their neighbours.

From the Qur’an to Ramadan, this friendly guide introduces you to the origins, practices and beliefs of Islam

Many non-Muslims have no idea that Muslims worship the same God as Christians and Jews, and that Islam preaches compassion, charity, humility, and the brotherhood of man. And the similarities don’t end there. According to Islamic teaching, Muhammad founded Islam in 610 CE after the angel Gabriel appeared to him at Mecca and told him that God had entered him among the ranks of such great biblical prophets as Abraham, Moses, and Christ.

Whether you live or work alongside Muslims and want to relate to them better, or you simply want to gain a better understanding of the world’s second largest religion, Islam For Dummies can help you make sense of this religion and its appeal, including:

    • Muhammad, the man and the legend
    • The Five Pillars of Wisdom
    • The Five Essentials beliefs of Islam
    • The different branches of Islam and Islamic sects
    • The Qur’an and Islamic law
    • Islam throughout history and its impact around the world

Professor Malcolm Clark explores the roots of Islam, how it has developed over the centuries, and it’s long and complex relationship with Christianity. He helps puts Islam in perspective as a major cultural and geopolitical force. And he provided helpful insights into, among other things:

    • Muhammad, the Qur’an and the ethical teachings of Islam
    • Muslim worship, customs, and rituals surrounding birth, marriage, and death
    • Shi’ites, Sunnis, Sufis, Druze, and other important Muslim groups
    • Islam in relation to Judaism and Christianity

In these troubled times, it is important that we try to understand the belief systems of others, for through understanding comes peace. Islam For Dummies helps you build bridges of understanding between you and your neighbors in the global village.

P.S. If you think this book seems familiar, you’re probably right. • Understanding Islam: Its Spirit and Values

Most of the great religions of the world began with the need to reform individuals and society, especially when there was large-scale moral degeneration. But over time, their essence became obscured by politics and rhetoric, leading to misinterpretation and fundamentalism. Islam is no exception.

Understanding Islam examines the true spirit and essence of the religion based on its original scripture, the Holy Quran, and how far it has moved away from its spirit and values. Using Abdullah Yusuf Ali’s translation, The Meaning of Glorious Quran: Text, Translation and Commentary, as well as Wahiduddin Khan and Farida Khanam’s translation, The Quran, the author discusses the Quranic invalidity of the interpretation of the religion by hardliners and counters prevailing distortions in the interpretation of some of the verses that only serve divisive and extremist agendas. The book also sheds light on simple yet profound questions of right and wrong, divine mercy and wrath, trials and prayer, life and the afterlife.

A moving and deeply spiritual read, Understanding Islam is a must-read to comprehend the true nature of Islam.

  • Covering Islam: How the Media and the Experts Determine How We See the Rest of the World

    08

From the Iranian hostage crisis through the Gulf War and the World Trade Centre bombing, the West has been haunted by a spectre called ‘Islam’. As portrayed by the news media – and by a chorus of government, academic and corporate experts – ‘Islam’ is synonymous with terrorism and religious hysteria. At the same time, Islamic countries use Islam to justify unrepresentative and often oppressive regimes.

In this landmark work, for which he has written a new introduction, one of our foremost public thinkers examines the origins and repercussions of the media’s monolithic images of Islam. Combining political commentary with literary criticism, Edward Said reveals the hidden assumptions and distortions of fact that underlie even the most ‘objective’ coverage of the Islamic world.

  • Islamic History: A Very Short Introduction (Very Short Introductions)

    08
Does history matter? This book argues not that history matters, but that Islamic history does. This Very Short Introduction introduces the story of Islamic history; the controversies surrounding its study; and the significance that it holds – for Muslims and for non-Muslims alike.

Opening with a lucid overview of the rise and spread of Islam, from the seventh to twenty first century, the book charts the evolution of what was originally a small, localised community of believers into an international religion with over a billion adherents.
Chapters are also dedicated to the peoples – Arabs, Persians, and Turks – who shaped Islamic history, and to three representative institutions – the mosque, jihad, and the caliphate – that highlight Islam’s diversity over time.

Finally, the roles that Islamic history has played in both religious and political contexts are analysed, while stressing the unique status that history enjoys amongst Muslims, especially compared to its lowly place in Western societies where history is often seen as little more than something that is not to be repeated.

Some of the questions that will be answered are:

    · How did Islam arise from the obscurity of seventh century Arabia to the headlines of twenty first century media?
    · How do we know what we claim to know about Islam’s rise and development?
    · Why does any of this matter, either to Muslims or to non-Muslims?

ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.

  • The House of Islam: A Global History

    06

    ‘A powerful corrective’ Guardian

‘This should be compulsory reading’ Peter Frankopan, author of The Silk Roads

‘For anyone interested in the future of Islam, both in Britain and the Islamic world, this is an important book’ The Times

The gulf between Islam and the West is widening. A faith rich with strong values and traditions, observed by nearly two billion people is seen by the West as something to be feared rather than understood. Sensational headlines and hard-line policies spark enmity, while ignoring the feelings, narratives and perceptions that preoccupy Muslims today.

The House of Islam seeks to provide entry to the minds and hearts of Muslims the world over. It introduces us to the kindness of Mohammed, the beauty of Islamic art and the permeation of the divine in public spaces; and the tension between mysticism and literalism that still threatens the religion.

Ed Husain expertly and compassionately guides us through the nuances of Islam and its people, contending that the Muslim world need not be a stranger to the West, nor its enemy, but a peaceable ally.

  • Muhammad: His Life Based on the Earliest Sources

    08
Acclaimed worldwide as the definitive biography of the Prophet in the English language. Martin Lings’ life of Muhammad is unlike any other. Based on Arabic sources of the eighth and ninth centuries, of which some important passages are translated here for the first time, it owes the freshness and directness of its approach to the words of men and women who heard Muhammad speak and witnessed the events of his life. Martin Lings has an unusual gift for narrative. He has adopted a style which is at once extremely readable and reflects both the simplicity and grandeur of the story. The result is a book which will be read with equal enjoyment by those already familiar with Muhammad’s life and those coming to it for the first time. This book was given an award by the government of Pakistan, and selected as the best biography of the Prophet in English at the National Seerat Conference in Islamabad in 1983. In 1990, after the book had attracted the attention of Azhar University, the author received a decoration from president Mubarak.Martin Lings, formerly Keeper of Oriental Manuscript in the British Museum and the British Library, is the author of three works on Islamic mysticism, A Sufi Saint of the Twentieth Century, What is Sufism? and The Book of Certainty, all published by The Islamic Texts Society.

  • Islam and the West

    06
Hailed in The New York Times Book Review as “the doyen of Middle Eastern studies,” Bernard Lewis has been for half a century one of the West’s foremost scholars of Islamic history and culture, the author of over two dozen books, most notably The Arabs in History, The Emergence of Modern Turkey, The Political Language of Islam, and The Muslim Discovery of Europe. Eminent French historian Robert Mantran has written of Lewis’s work: “How could one resist being attracted to the books of an author who opens for you the doors of an unknown or misunderstood universe, who leads you within to its innermost domains: religion, ways of thinking, conceptions of power, culture–an author who upsets notions too often fixed, fallacious, or partisan.”
In Islam and the West, Bernard Lewis brings together in one volume eleven essays that indeed open doors to the innermost domains of Islam. Lewis ranges far and wide in these essays. He includes long pieces, such as his capsule history of the interaction–in war and peace, in commerce and culture–between Europe and its Islamic neighbors, and shorter ones, such as his deft study of the Arabic word watan and what its linguistic history reveals about the introduction of the idea of patriotism from the West. Lewis offers a revealing look at Edward Gibbon’s portrait of Muhammad in Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire (unlike previous writers, Gibbon saw the rise of Islam not as something separate and isolated, nor as a regrettable aberration from the onward march of the church, but simply as a part of human history); he offers a devastating critique of Edward Said’s controversial book, Orientalism; and he gives an account of the impediments to translating from classic Arabic to other languages (the old dictionaries, for one, are packed with scribal errors, misreadings, false analogies, and etymological deductions that pay little attention to the evolution of the language). And he concludes with an astute commentary on the Islamic world today, examining revivalism, fundamentalism, the role of the Shi’a, and the larger question of religious co-existence between Muslims, Christians, and Jews.
A matchless guide to the background of Middle East conflicts today, Islam and the West presents the seasoned reflections of an eminent authority on one of the most intriguing and little understood regions in the world.
