• Obliterate (The NOLA Defiance MC Series Book 7)

    05
We met a long time ago.
    Our bond, instant.
And it didn’t matter that she was older than me.

At the time I didn’t see her as anything but an incredible woman who stepped up and cared for me when no one else would. Now, years later, Ingrid is the ‘mother’ of the club I’ve transferred to.
The thought of us wasn’t a fantasy for me back then.
    But it’s becoming one now.
The problem is—she’s my president’s stepmom.
And her deceased husband was my father’s best friend.

To say it’s complicated is an understatement. As we develop feelings for each other, life-threatening curveballs are launched in her direction—and I’m the only one who knows.
While trying to keep her safe, the club is at war, the fight coming at us from multiple directions.
The chaos is real and unwavering.
But in the face of obliteration, we can do nothing else but stand tall because…
    We are Defiance!

From USA Today Bestselling Author K E Osborn comes the eagerly awaited final book in the NOLA Defiance MC Series.
This is a reverse age gap, ex’s best friend’s son book, and can be read as a standalone.

  • OCaml Scientific Computing: Functional Programming in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (Undergraduate Topics in Computer Science)

This book is about the harmonious synthesis of functional programming and numerical computation. It shows how the expressiveness of OCaml allows for fast and safe development of data science applications. Step by step, the authors build up to use cases drawn from many areas of Data Science, Machine Learning, and AI, and then delve into how to deploy at scale, using parallel, distributed, and accelerated frameworks to gain all the advantages of cloud computing environments.

To this end, the book is divided into three parts, each focusing on a different area. Part I begins by introducing how basic numerical techniques are performed in OCaml, including classical mathematical topics (interpolation and quadrature), statistics, and linear algebra. It moves on from using only scalar values to multi-dimensional arrays, introducing the tensor and Ndarray, core data types in any numerical computing system. It concludes with two more classical numerical computing topics, the solution of Ordinary Differential Equations (ODEs) and Signal Processing, as well as introducing the visualization module we use throughout this book. Part II is dedicated to advanced optimization techniques that are core to most current popular data science fields. We do not focus only on applications but also on the basic building blocks, starting with Algorithmic Differentiation, the most crucial building block that in turn enables Deep Neural Networks. We follow this with chapters on Optimization and Regression, also used in building Deep Neural Networks. We then introduce Deep Neural Networks as well as topic modelling in Natural Language Processing (NLP), two advanced and currently very active fields in both industry and academia. Part III collects a range of case studies demonstrating how you can build a complete numerical application quickly from scratch using Owl. The cases presented include computer vision and recommender systems.

This book aims at anyone with a basic knowledge of functional programming and a desire to explore the world of scientific computing, whether to generally explore the field in the round, to build applications for particular topics, or to deep-dive into how numerical systems are constructed. It does not assume strict ordering in reading – readers can simply jump to the topic that interests them most.

  • Occupational Therapy Disruptors: What Global OT Practice Can Teach Us About Innovation, Culture, and Community

This anthology collates 16 unique and powerful perspectives from occupational therapists around the globe, each highlighting the culture that they are a part of and how it informs their work and care. Ranging across almost every continent in the world including stories from Aotearoa to the Gaza Strip to Dhaka and beyond, Occupational Therapy Disruptors offers a decolonised re-examination of occupational therapy through a poignant, global lens.

  • Occupational Therapy for People Experiencing Illness, Injury or Impairment: Promoting occupation and participation, 7e (Occupational Therapy Essentials)

    03

Formerly entitled Occupational Therapy and Physical Dysfunction this seminal textbook builds on the strengths of all previous editions and continues to explore the work of occupational therapists with people who are experiencing illness, injury or impairment. It links theory with day-to-day practice, stimulating reflection on the knowledge, expertise and attitudes that inform practice, and encouraging the development of occupation-focused practice.

The new title, Occupational Therapy for People Experiencing Illness, Injury or Impairment, reflects the knowledge, attitudes and skills that underpin the practice of promoting occupation and participation. It showcases how occupational therapists work with people – not medical conditions and diagnoses – as individuals, groups, communities, and populations.

The new edition now has additional chapters on the assessment and intervention stages of the professional reasoning process to assist development of enabling skills and strategies. It also includes many more practice stories throughout to provide authentic examples to illustrate the application of theory to practice. Learning is further reinforced via access to a new online resource – Evolve Resources – which includes MCQs, reflective questions and three bonus interactive practice stories with accompanying reflective videos. These are all signposted within the textbook.

Now compromising seven sections, which follow the professional reasoning format of the Canadian Practice Process Framework (CPPF), the new edition first tracks the evolution of occupational therapy in the context of health care. It then examines the foundational biomedical and social sciences, in addition to occupational science, before going on to the areas of assessment; writing occupation-focused goals; enabling skills and strategies which include advocacy and lobbying, public health, and community-based rehabilitation. The book ends with a chapter on developing effective reflection skills to enable occupational therapists to critically evaluate their practice, evolve as practitioners, and maintain and develop their professional competencies.

    • Links theory with day-to-day practice, stimulating reflection
    • Includes occupational, biomedical and social sciences that underpin occupational therapy practice
    • Focus on working with groups, communities and populations in addition to working with individuals reflecting the evolving and expanding scope of practice
    • Use of person-centred or inclusive and strengths-based language
    • Three bonus interactive practice stories online at Evolve Resources and signposted at the end of Sections 3-7 in the textbook
    • New title echoes the contemporary strength-based and occupation-focused nature of occupational therapy practice which involves working with people and not medical conditions and diagnoses

  • Ocean: Earth’s Last Wilderness

From the icy oceans of our poles to remote coral islands, David Attenborough has filmed in every ocean habitat on planet earth. Now, with long-term collaborator Colin Butfield, he shares the story of our last great, critical wilderness, and the one which shapes the land we live on, regulates our climate and creates the air we breathe.

Through one hundred years, eight unique ocean habitats, countless intriguing species – and through personal stories, history and cutting-edge science – Ocean uncovers the mystery, the wonder and the frailty of the most unexplored habitat on our planet. And it shows its remarkable resilience: it is the part of our world that can, and in some cases has, recovered the fastest, and in our lifetimes we could see a fully restored marine world, even richer and more spectacular than we could possibly hope, if we act now.

It is a book almost a century in the making, but one that has never been more urgently needed.

The old saying does often seem to hold true: the rich get richer while the poor get poorer, creating a widening gap between those who have more and those who have less. The sociologist Robert K. Merton called this phenomenon the Matthew effect, named after a passage in the gospel of Matthew. Yet the more closely we examine the sociological effects of this principle, the more complicated the idea becomes. Initial advantage doesn’t always lead to further advantage, and disadvantage doesn’t necessarily translate into failure. Does this theory need to be revisited?Merton’s arguments have significant implications for our conceptions of equality and justice, and they challenge our beliefs about culture, education, and public policy. His hypothesis has been examined across a variety of social arenas, including science, technology, politics, and schooling, to see if, in fact, advantage begets further advantage. Daniel Rigney is the first to evaluate Merton’s theory of cumulative advantage extensively, considering both the conditions that uphold the Matthew effect and the circumstances that cause it to fail. He explores whether growing inequality is beyond human control or disparity is socially constructed and subject to change. Reexamining our core assumptions about society, Rigney causes us to rethink the sources of inequity.

  • Odyssey Moscow: One American’s Journey from Russia Optimist to Prisoner of the State

‘A riveting tale of betrayal and lawlessness by the Russian Government, told by the most successful US investor in Russia’ – Ambassador John Sullivan, US Ambassador to Russia 2020–22

It is dawn on Thursday, 14 February 2019, and armed FSB agents are raiding Michael Calvey’s Moscow apartment.

He is being arrested for a crime that never happened.

Twenty-eight years earlier, Calvey – a newly graduated, aspiring Wall Street hotshot – made a short trip from America to the recently collapsed USSR to look at potential investments. Sensing huge opportunity, he soon based himself in Moscow, where he lived through the ‘Wild East’ years and went on to build several billion-dollar funds – earning enormous returns for Western investors as Russia opened up to international business. He gained a reputation that would lead to Bloomberg describing him as ‘a legend in the Russian market, with a reputed aversion to any kind of foul play’.

But now, he finds himself thrown into Moscow’s notorious Matrosskaya Tishina prison on charges trumped up by local business rivals. As the White House and Kremlin argue about his incarceration, Calvey is caught in a Kafka-esque trap, denied access to evidence proving his innocence.

Odyssey Moscow is the story not just of Michael Calvey, but of how Russia’s era of hope and aspiration finally died, and how light can be found in the darkest of places.
