• Rugby: An Anthology: The Brave, the Bruised and the Brilliant

    08

Inspiring and irreverent by turns, Brian Levison’s new anthology has drawn on rugby’s wealth of excellent writing. Frank Keating, P. G. Wodehouse, Alec Waugh, A. A. Thomson, John Reason and Mick Imlah are among the distinguished names who have written movingly, amusingly and entertainingly about the game they loved.

Great players such as Brian O’Driscoll, Willie John McBride, J. P. R. Williams, Chester Williams, Colin Meads, Gavin Hastings and Brian Moore give us a fascinating insider’s view, as does World Cup Final referee Derek Bevan, who reveals what it is like to try to control thirty powerful and often volatile men in a highly competitive situation. But some of the best writing and the wittiest insights come from those who played their rugby at a much less exalted level.

The origins of the game – sometimes true, sometimes fanciful – are explored as are some of its rituals like the haka. There are amusing tales including that of the four Tibetan boys sent by the Dalai Lama to learn the game at Rugby School and an account of New Zealand scrum-half Chris Laidlaw’s hostile reception at a village fête in Wales. Along with barely believable stories about the game’s hardest men, including the French coach Jean ‘le Sultan’ Sébédio, who used to conduct training sessions wearing a sombrero and wielding a long whip, and ‘Red’ Conway who had his finger amputated rather than miss a game for South Africa.

One section ‘Double Vision’ looks at the same incident from opposing viewpoints, such as when the then relatively inexperienced Irish immortal Willie John McBride took a swing at the mighty All Black Colin Meads in a line-out. Another, ‘Giving it Everything’, shows how exceptional courage was not restricted to the rugby field but extended to the battle grounds of the First World War.

From the compiler of highly acclaimed All in a Day’s Cricket, this selection covers the game from virtually every angle and is sure to delight any rugby fan.

  • Rugby: Talking A Good Game: The Perfect Gift for Rugby Fans

    04

Ian Robertson joined the BBC during the golden age of radio broadcasting and was given a crash course in the art of sports commentary from some of the greatest names ever to sit behind a microphone: Cliff Morgan and Peter Bromley, Bryon Butler and John Arlott. Almost half a century after being introduced to the rugby airwaves by his inspiring mentor Bill McLaren, the former Scotland fly-half looks back on the most eventful of careers, during which he covered nine British and Irish Lions tours and eight World Cups, including the 2003 tournament that saw England life the Webb Ellis Trophy and “Robbo” pick up awards for his spine-tingling description of Jonny Wilkinson’s decisive drop goal.

He reflects on his playing days, his role in guiding Cambridge University to a long spell of Varsity Match supremacy and his relationships with some of the union code’s most celebrated figures, including Sir Clive Woodward and Jonah Lomu. He also writes vividly and hilariously of his experiences as a horse racing enthusiast, his meetings with some of the world’s legendary golfers and his dealings with a stellar cast of sporting outsiders, from Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor to Nelson Mandela. It is a hugely entertaining story that begins in a bygone rugby age, yet has much to say about the game in the here and now.

  • Rugby! Be the best ‘You’ you can be!: Using the Rugby mindset for a positive and successful life

    04
‘Rugby! Be the best `You` you can be!’, is about personal and professional development through the mindset of the Rugby player. We are all very different, but we all want to succeed and ultimately be happy. This book is a philosophy of improvement using Rugby Union as the mentor. When we want to improve ourselves on a personal level, we think about getting a `life coach`, and when we want to improve ourselves on a professional level, we think about getting a `mentor`. When we are looking to improve ourselves as a team, we go on `teambuilding exercises`. Rugby is all about personal and professional improvement and above all, teamwork! Life is the ultimate team sport! No matter who we are, we all have people we rely on, or that rely on us. Whether we have friends, family, students, teachers, clients, suppliers, employers and employees, we are all working together for success and happiness. I realised, after listening to many different specialists and studying many different techniques in business leadership, management, emotional intelligence and motivation, that there were many analogies and phrases from the world of sports but that was where it stopped. Understanding that a company is only as good as its team, why was I not learning from the greatest teams? Rugby is all about how to work effectively as a team and how to get the best from yourself and your teammates. There are also lessons in leadership, motivation, work ethic, self-awareness, positive mental attitude, self-control, discipline, patience, emotional intelligence, personal growth, responsibility, fulfilment, respect and, above all, happiness! A Rugby player cannot win on their own, therefore there is no success without a team. Simply put, we all understand sport and the sports team mentality, so we already understand how to succeed, personally and professionally. Studying leadership, motivation and teamwork is as complicated as watching the game at the weekend. This book shows how easy it is to create a winning mindset that will help you be more successful, positive and happy! Become the best `You` you can be with a sport team mentality. Grab life with both hands and win!

    03
“This book will empower you to survive violence — the real way.” – Bear Grylls

Rules of Engagement is an end-to-end breakdown of self-defence law.

In unprecedented detail, it explores the letter of the law and what this means in the real world when it is applied to the aftermath of violent incidents.
The law is subjective, but the consequences of taking action in self-defence can be all too objective. Rules of Engagement will help you to make informed judgements about what is lawful and what is not in any given situation, keeping you safer legally, just as physical training keeps you safe in a physical sense.
If you train in the martial arts, or a self-defence discipline, or if you are a professional who must face violence as part of your working life, you owe it to yourself to read this book and develop a confident and fluid understanding of the law surrounding use of force.

  • Running from Injury: Why runners get injured and how to stop it

    06
Peter Francis saw his teenage years transformed by a miracle drug called running. His elation was
soon followed by despair, in the form of 12-years of repetitive injuries. Spurred on by personal
injustice, Peter pursued 3-science degrees, multiple coaching and consultancy roles before making a
breakthrough in the form of what had seemed like an unlikely comeback. In 2016 aged 29-years, for
the first time in his life, he ran for almost 3-years uninterrupted. This period coincided with running
multiple personal bests (33:46 10-km; 78:00 half marathon). In this book, he uses a combination of
his own story and his learnings spanning some 18-years of trial and error to provide a holistic
explanation for why runners get injured and how best to avoid it. His personal story is as captivating
as the information it imparts. Whether you are a disgruntled beginner or an Olympic hopeful, you
cannot help but become more consistent having read this book.

  • Running with the Firm: My Double Life as an Undercover Hooligan

    08

    ‘Of course I’m a f**king hooligan, you pr**k. I am a hooligan…there I’ve said it…I’m a hooligan. And, do you know why? Because that’s my f**king job.’

In 1995, a film called I.D., about an ambitious young copper who was sent undercover to track down the ‘generals’ of a football hooligan gang, achieved cult status for its sheer brutality and unsettling insight into the dark and often bloody side of the so-called beautiful game.

The film was so shocking it was hard to believe the mindless events that took place could ever happen in the real world. Well, believe it now…

Almost twenty years on, the man behind the film has explosively revealed that the script was largely a true story. That man, James Bannon, was the ambitious undercover cop. The football club was Millwall F.C. and the gang that he infiltrated was The Bushwackers, among the most brutal and fearless in English football.

In Running with the Firm, Bannon shares his intense and dangerous journey into the underworld of football hooliganism where sickening levels of violence prevail over anything else. He introduces you to the hardest thugs from football’s most notorious gangs, tells all about the secret and almost comical police operations that were meant to bring them down, and, how once you’re on the inside, getting out from the mob proves to be the biggest mission of all.

A disturbing but compelling read, this is the book that proves fact really is stranger than fiction.

  • Ruskin Park: Sylvia, Me and the BBC

    08

‘Ruskin Park is so much more than a memoir. It is tribute to an individual woman and a whole generation and class.’ – Justin Webb, The Sunday Times

‘Ruskin Park is Rory Cellan-Jones’s touching tribute to both his parents, but particularly to the mother he came to know more fully from the letters she left behind’ – Daily Mail

‘A captivating family detective story and a poignant social history of Britain.’ – Observer

    ***

Can we ever really know the truth about our parents? From the popular journalist, podcaster and tweeter about his rescue dog #SophiefromRomania comes a moving memoir in search of the truth behind his isolated childhood and absent father.

Rory Cellan-Jones knew he was the child of a brief love affair between two unmarried BBC employees. But until his mother died and he found a previously unknown file labelled ‘For Rory’ he had no idea of their beginnings or ending, and why his peculiarly isolated childhood had so tested the bond between him and his mother. ‘For Rory,’ his mother had written on the file ‘in the hope that it will help him understand how it really was …’

This is a compelling account of what Rory uncovered in the papers, letters and diaries; a relationship between two colleagues (two romantics) and the restrictive forces of post-war respectability and prejudice that ended it. It is also an evocation of the progressive, centrifugal force at the centre of all their lives – the BBC itself.

Both tender and troubling, the drama moves from wartime radio broadcasts, to the glamour of 1950s television studios, to the golden era of BBC drama. His father may have directed The Forsyte Saga and Rory may have watched him from the corridors, but he would never actually meet him until much later in adulthood. Until then Rory’s life was bound to the one-bedroom flat he shared with his mother in Ruskin Park …

‘I loved this highly evocative, unpretentious memoir. It’s a small-scale BBC drama in itself.’ – The Times

  • Russia and Central Asia: Coexistence, Conquest, Convergence

Russia and Central Asia provides an overview of the relationship between two dynamic regions, highlighting the ways in which Russia and Central Asia have influenced and been influenced by Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. This readable synthesis, covering early coexistence in the seventeenth century to the present day, seeks to encourage new ways of thinking about how the modern world developed. Shoshana Keller focuses on the five major “Stans”: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan. Cultural and social history are interwoven with the military narrative to provide a sense of the people, their religion, and their practices – all of which were severely tested under Stalin. The text includes a glossary as well as images and maps that help to highlight 500 years of changes, bringing Central Asia into the general narrative of Russian and world history and introducing a fresh perspective on colonialism and modernity.

  • Russia: Revolution and Civil War 1917-1921

    07

    ‘A masterpiece of history’
    DAILY TELEGRAPH

Between 1917 and 1921 a devastating struggle took place in Russia following the collapse of the Tsarist empire. Many regard this savage civil war as the most influential event of the modern era. An incompatible White alliance of moderate socialists and reactionary monarchists stood little chance against Trotsky’s Red Army and Lenin’s single-minded Communist dictatorship. Terror begat terror, which in turn led to even greater cruelty with man’s inhumanity to man, woman and child. The struggle became a world war by proxy as Churchill deployed weaponry and troops from the British empire, while armed forces from the United States, France, Italy, Japan, Poland and Czechoslovakia played rival parts.

Using the most up to date scholarship and archival research, Antony Beevor, author of the acclaimed international bestseller Stalingrad, assembles the complete picture in a gripping narrative that conveys the conflict through the eyes of everyone from the worker on the streets of Petrograd to the cavalry officer on the battlefield and the woman doctor in an improvised hospital.

  • Russia’s War Against Ukraine

On 24 February 2022, Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, giving rise to the deadliest conflict on European soil since the Second World War. How could this happen in twenty-first-century Europe? Why did Putin decide to escalate Russia’s war against Ukraine, a war which began with Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014?

In this timely book, Gwendolyn Sasse analyses the background to this war and examines the factors that led to Putin’s fateful decision. She retraces the history of Ukraine’s struggle for independence from Russia and shows how democratic developments in Ukraine had become a risk for Russia’s political system. She also shows that ambiguous Western policy towards Russia encouraged elites in the Kremlin to think that they had more room for action than they did. The result is a brilliant analysis of the background to the war, a concise account of the course of the war itself and a timely reflection on what its consequences will be – for Ukraine, for Russia and for the West.

An indispensable book for anyone who wants to understand the most dangerous conflict of our time.

  • Ruth Asawa Through Line

A groundbreaking examination of how the act of drawing was a vital component of Ruth Asawa’s multifaceted art

    “A revelatory exhibition. . . . [A] fine exhibition catalog.”―Nancy Princenthal, New York Times, “Critic’s Pick”

Ruth Asawa (1926–2013), widely known for her looped-wire sculptures, was an inveterate drawer. She filled sketchbook after sketchbook and even stated that drawing was central to her sculpture. This volume is the first to consider the significance of drawing in Asawa’s oeuvre throughout her career, featuring essays that examine the range of Asawa’s aesthetic maneuvers across materials and techniques; how Asawa’s drawing intertwined with the Bay Area arts community and her contributions to public education as a teacher and organizer; and the influence of Josef Albers’s pedagogy and Asawa’s lifelong adoption of his type of paper folding. Tracing Asawa’s artistic journey from her first formal art lessons in a Japanese American internment camp during World War II through her time at Black Mountain College and beyond, this comprehensive overview of the artist’s drawings includes reproductions of more than one hundred works―many of which have never been published―organized into eight thematic sections that cut through time, reflecting an art-making practice that was more circular or cyclical than linear.

  • Saarinen

    02

The creator of the ubiquitous Knoll “Tulip” chairs and tables, Eero Saarinen (1910–1961) was one of the 20th century’s most prominent space shapers, merging dynamic forms with a modernist sensibility across architecture and design.

Among Saarinen’s greatest accomplishments are Washington D.C.’s Dulles International Airport, the very sculptural and fluid TWA terminal at JFK Airport in New York, and the 630 ft. (192 m) high Gateway Arch of St. Louis, Missouri, each of them defining structures of postwar America. Catenary curves were present in many of his structural designs. During his long association with Knoll, Saarinen’s other famous furniture pieces included the “Grasshopper” lounge chair and the “Womb” settee. Married to Aline Bernstein Saarinen, a well-known critic of art and architecture, Saarinen also collaborated with Charles Eames, with whom he designed his first prize-winning chair.

With rich illustration tracing his life and career, this introduction follows Saarinen from his studies across his training all the way to his most prestigious projects, and explores how each of his designs brought a new dimension to the modernist landscape.

    02
Filled with hundreds of specific examples and organized into a coherent framework of practical concepts that can be applied by managers and entrepreneurs at all levels, Built to Last provides a master blueprint for building organizations that will prosper in the 21st century and beyond. In Good to Great, the most widely anticipated management book of the year, Jim Collins presents nothing less than a recipe book on how to make a good company great. Following the success of his international blockbuster Built to Last, where he and co-author Jerry Porras discovered the secrets of companies that were outstanding at their founding and then sustained greatness, Collins wondered what could be done for the company that is good or mediocre at best? He questioned whether there have been companies that started weak and finished strong, and if so, what can be said about these companies that might help managers turn a mediocre organization into a great one? So Collins and his research team undertook a massive five year study of every company that has made the Fortune 500 since the advent of that listing in 1965, and has crafted a book as practical and insightful as BUILT TO LAST. This exclusive deluxe box set brings together the two most important business books of the last decade from Jim Collins, the leader in modern business theory.

  • Sacred Objects in Secular Spaces: Exhibiting Asian Religions in Museums

    01
We have long recognized that many objects in museums were originally on display in temples, shrines, or monasteries, and were religiously significant to the communities that created and used them. How, though, are such objects to be understood, described, exhibited, and handled now that they are in museums? Are they still sacred objects, or formerly sacred objects that are now art objects, or are they simultaneously objects of religious and artistic significance, depending on who is viewing the object? These objects not only raise questions about their own identities, but also about the ways we understand the religious traditions in which these objects were created and which they represent in museums today.

Bringing together religious studies scholars and museum curators, Sacred Objects in Secular Spaces is the first volume to focus on Asian religions in relation to these questions. The contributors analyze an array of issues related to the exhibition in museums of objects of religious significance from Hindu, Buddhist, and Sikh traditions. The “lives” of objects are considered, along with the categories of “sacred” and “profane”, “religious” and “secular”.

As interest in material manifestations of religious ideas and practices continues to grow, Sacred Objects in Secular Spaces is a much-needed contribution to religious and Asian studies, anthropology of religion and museums studies.
