  • Bloody Aachen: The First German City Ever Besieged by the U.S. Army (Americans Fighting to Free Europe)

    03
A fascinating account of the first German city ever besieged by the U.S. Army and the monumental battle that took place amongst its ruined walls.

This book would be perfect for readers of George Feifer, Stephen E. Ambrose, and James Holland.

Aachen saw some of the fiercest fighting of the Second World War. Through the determined defense of their city the citizens of Aachen held off the oncoming American forces for six weeks, giving the Nazis time to mobilize their troops for what would become the Battle of the Bulge. Had it not been for dogged resistance of these men and women the last great German offensive in the West might have never occurred, potentially ending the war in Europe could have ended six months and saving the lives of thousands.

Yet, Charles Whiting’s remarkable book, Bloody Aachen, is more than an account of a military operation. Through interviews with German and Dutch participants in the battle he builds an in-depth picture of who the defenders of the city were, informing us that many in this Catholic city were opposed to the Hitler regime and remained behind — against orders and against odds — determined to defend their homes, unwittingly aiding their Nazi enemies as they did so.

‘Whiting writes clear, hard-driving prose’ Kirkus Reviews

This book should be essential reading for all interested in this monumental siege which truly encapsulates the complex motives of the men and women who fought through the course of the Second World War.

  • The Western Front: A History of the First World War

    04

A SUNDAY TIMES BOOK OF THE YEAR
A TELEGRAPH BOOK OF THE YEAR

‘A tour de force of scholarship, analysis and narration . . . Lloyd is well on the way to writing a definitive history of the First World War’ Lawrence James, The Times

‘This well-researched, well-written and cogently argued new analysis . . . will undoubtedly now take its rightful place as the standard account of this vital theatre of the conflict’ Andrew Roberts, author of Churchill: Walking with Destiny
    _________________

In the annals of military history, the Western Front stands as an enduring symbol of the folly and futility of war.

However, as bestselling military historian Nick Lloyd reveals in this highly-praised history – the first of an epic trilogy — the story is not one of pointlessness and stupidity, but rather a heroic triumph against the odds. With a cast of hundreds and a huge canvas of places and events, Lloyd tells the whole tale, revealing what happened in France and Belgium between August 1914 and November 1918 from the perspective of all the main combatants – including French, British, Belgian, US and, most importantly, German forces.

Lloyd examines the most decisive campaigns of the Great War and explains the unprecedented innovation, adaptation and tactical development that have been too long obscured by legends of mud, blood and futility, drawing upon the latest scholarship on the war, wrongly overlooked first-person accounts, and archival material from every angle. Conveying the visceral assault of the battlefield with vivid detail, Lloyd ultimately redefines our understanding of a crucial theatre in this monumental tragedy.

‘Excellent on detail . . . Lloyd’s book will be cherished by military history buffs’ Max Hastings, Sunday Times

  • The Last Empire: The Final Days of the Soviet Union

    08
BY THE AUTHOR OF CHERNOBYL: HISTORY OF A TRAGEDY, WINNER OF THE BAILLIE GIFFORD PRIZE 2018

WINNER OF THE PUSHKIN HOUSE RUSSIAN BOOK PRIZE 2015

On Christmas Day 1991 Mikhail Gorbachev resigned as president of the Soviet Union. By the next day the USSR was officially no more and the USA had emerged as the world’s sole superpower. Award-winning historian Serhii Plokhy presents a page-turning account of the preceding five months of drama, filled with failed coups d’état and political intrigue.

Honing in on this previously disregarded but crucial period and using recently declassified documents and original interviews with key participants, he shatters the established myths of 1991 and presents a bold new interpretation of the Soviet Union’s final months. Plokhy argues that contrary to the triumphalist Western narrative, George H. W. Bush desperately wanted to preserve the Soviet Union and keep Gorbachev in power, and that it was Ukraine and not the US that played the key role in the collapse of the Soviet Union. The consequences of those five months and the myth-making that has since surrounded them are still being felt in Crimea, Russia, the US, and Europe today.

With its spellbinding narrative and strikingly fresh perspective, The Last Empire is the essential account of one of the most important watershed periods in world history, and is indispensable reading for anyone seeking to make sense of international politics today.

    Introduction:

Thanks for purchasing this eBook, as you show a genuine interest in the world of Airbrushing “Aquatic Animals”. Back when I was learning to draw aquatic animals, I liked watching the wonderful scene inside the aquarium, of my pet“Goldfish”. At first I was amazed at the features and colors, but when I kept seeing more details as it moved, an idea struck inside my head. I thought about adding some colors to my drawing. I kept the drawing for a while, since I’m still learning to paint in acrylic, and after a few months of browsing some of my files, I saw my drawing again. I decided to paint it in colors with acrylic using an airbrush, since by that time I already knew how to use an airbrush. I painted it with a very satisfied result, and later on I saw it hung on the wall of my best friend house. I was so glad!

I’m not encouraging you to give away your masterpiece, rather the point I’m making is that with your airbrush, you can make limitless fantastic art. If only you could imagine this tool’sgreatness with its capabilities. So, I made this eBook for you to learn the basics of airbrushing that every beginner needs to know and practice to master it. I made this book also, for an airbrush artist who wants to learn to paint aquatic creatures. We will be using some other materials to complete our artwork like; Watercolor pencils, masking film or other masking materials that are available, and many more. Why did Agatha Christie spend her career pretending that she was ‘just’ an ordinary housewife, when clearly she wasn’t? As Lucy Worsley says, ‘She was thrillingly, scintillatingly modern’. She went surfing in Hawaii, she loved fast cars, and she was intrigued by the new science of psychology, which helped her through devastating mental illness.

So why – despite all the evidence to the contrary – did Agatha present herself as a retiring Edwardian lady of leisure?
She was born in 1890 into a world which had its own rules about what women could and couldn’t do. Lucy Worsley’s biography is not just of an internationally renowned bestselling writer. It’s also the story of a person who, despite the obstacles of class and gender, became an astonishingly successful working woman.

With access to personal letters and papers that have rarely been seen, Lucy Worsley’s biography is both authoritative and entertaining and makes us realise what an extraordinary pioneer Agatha Christie was – truly a woman who wrote the twentieth century.

  • Dating For December: A steamy, fake-dating, single-dad romance with ALL the festive feels!

    02
He’s an expert at break ups…but can he master a love that lasts?

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ “Lyndsey Gallagher is THE QUEEN page turners!”

    Ava:
My perpetually single status hardly serves as a shining advertisement for HeartSync, the dating agency I own. Nor is it likely to convince my incredibly successful movie star brother, Nate, to invest in my business. Which is precisely why I agree to fake-date Cillian “can’t-crack-a-smile” Callaghan for the month of December.

Sure, his role as a stoically single father and a notoriously grumpy divorce lawyer is far from ideal, but his silver eyes, sculptured shoulders and sharp tongue tick all the right boxes.

Even boxes that are supposed to remain, ahem, unticked…

One mistletoe kiss sparks a lust that could melt Lapland, and frosty fake dates blaze into something feverishly real…

    Cillian:
I’m the country’s most successful divorce lawyer. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out why I don’t date. Add in the fact that I’m a full-time single dad, even if I had the inclination, I don’t have the time. But when my cheating ex blows back into town, the only way I can convince her it’s over for good is by fake-dating someone else…

Enter Ava Jackson, with her infectious laugh, long legs, and luscious lips.

Throughout December, her witty one-liners and effortless bond with my daughter thaw my every defense.

    She’s everything I never knew I needed.

  • Virginia Woolf: A Critical Memoir

    04
Virginia Woolf is one of the most important writers of the twentieth century.

Part of the Bloomsbury set, she lived surrounded by other artists and writers, and her novels and essays have inspired generations of readers and writers ever since their publication.

Her personal struggles with depression and mental illness, and her feminist beliefs come across strongly in her work, illuminating an important period in British social history, not just for women’s rights, but for a whole nation scarred by the effects of two world wars.

Winifred Holtby gives us Woolf the critic, the essayist and the experimental novelist in this critical memoir which is of particular interest as the work of one intelligent, though very different, novelist commenting on another.

Holtby’s careful reading of Woolf’s work is set in the context of the debate between modernist and traditional writing in the 1920s and 1930s.

Although Holtby greatly admires Woolf’s art, she considers its limitations as an elite form that ignores the material conditions of everyday life and the consequent social responsibility expected of the novel.

Choosing to write about Woolf as ‘the author whose art seemed most of all removed from anything I could ever attempt, and whose experience was most alien to my own,’ Holtby has written a candid appreciation of the complex, groundbreaking work of a contemporary writer at the height of her career.

Winifred Holtby (1898-1935) was an English novelist and journalist. She is also the author of the ‘South Riding’ series.
