On an icy Swedish archipelago, a girl is entangled in a dark mystery that only she holds the key to unraveling, in this fantasy thriller from the wondrous minds of Camilla Sten and Viveca Sten.
What happened out there in the woods?
Twelve-year-old Tuva couldn’t imagine living anywhere other than the Stockholm archipelago and her island home of Harö. Even if she mostly keeps to herself at her small school. Even if she sometimes gets kind of lonely.
But when a classmate goes missing, Tuva finds herself at the center of the mystery, along with Rasmus, the new boy at school. Neither one of them can understand what they saw that day in the woods near the water: Is something magical at work? Something evil?
And it’s not just their classmate who has gone missing. Other people around the islands have gone missing this fall, disappearing from their boats on the water, never to be heard from again. Can Tuva and Rasmus discover what secrets are lurking below…before it’s too late?

I, who never reads fantasies, really enjoyed this book! Expecting science fiction, it was great to be able to read another new-to-me author. The story kept me enthralled long past bedtime. The author handles the struggles of being on the outside of cliches and rejection by your peers so well. And I like that the main character wasn’t beautiful or rich, just full of commitment to doing what was good for others, no matter the cost to herself. Even for me, an 80+ year old lady, the writing was such that the interactions weren’t too simplified. No, they were definitely complicated and well handles. Don’t miss this series, no matter your age!

I just hope the age group this is meant for will enjoy it more than I did. This fantasy is too fantastic for me. I also skipped a lot of words at the end just to finally get there. This best part for me is Rasmus’s friendship

This is a fairly young YA book, the main character is 12, but I still enjoyed it as an adult. It was a quick read, I finished in two days. I loved the setting of the Swedish archipelago, the children all get picked up by boats to get to school. Tuva has become increasingly fearful of the water, and when her classmate vanishes Tuva starts to uncover the archipelago’s secrets.
This mixes Swedish folklore and myths with typical tween drama, and also injects the importance of protecting the oceans. I liked Tuva and enjoyed her story.

I got this as part of amazon’s first reads. To be honest, I didn’t read anything about it. I only saw the author, and knew I wanted it. And? Wow! This book is so, so amazing! I loved it! Can’t wait for the next one in the series.

This book addresses the issues of sea pollution, young adult cliques, adopted children, and being the outsider in a small community. The children are young teens in the Swedish archipelago traveling to and from school in local boats. They must confront the reality of a missing teen while supernatural beings try to interfere with their daily lives. It is frustrating to read as a former outsider teen because I was reading about someone else being bullied.
