  • You Should Be Grateful: Stories of Race, Identity, and Transracial Adoption

    01
An adoption expert and transracial adoptee herself examines the unique perspectives and challenges these adoptees have as they navigate multiple cultures

“Your parents are so amazing for adopting you! You should be grateful that you were adopted.”

Angela Tucker is a Black woman, adopted from foster care by white parents. She has heard this microaggression her entire life, usually from well-intentioned strangers who view her adoptive parents as noble saviors. She is grateful for many aspects of her life, but being transracially adopted involves layers of rejection, loss, and complexity that cannot be summed up so easily.

In “You Should Be Grateful,” Tucker centers the experiences of adoptees to share deeply personal stories, well-researched history, and engrossing anecdotes from mentorship sessions with adopted youth. These perspectives challenge the fairy-tale narrative of adoption, giving way to a fuller story that explores the impacts of racism, classism, family, love, and belonging.

  • Unspoken: The Silent Truth Behind My Lifelong Trauma as a Forced Adoptee (Stolen Lives)

    06

“I was two when the woman I called Mummy told me, ‘You came out of another mummy’s tummy.’ I grew up thinking that my birth mother didn’t want me. I assumed there must’ve been something inherently wrong with me – why else would a mother give up her baby?”

In 1974, Liz Harvie – born Claire Elaine Watts – was given up for adoption by her birth mother Yvonne. Claire spent the first ten days of her life with Yvonne before being placed in a foster home. Almost eight weeks later, Claire’s adoptive parents collected her from the foster home – and renamed her Elizabeth.

Although brought up in a ‘perfect’ household, the emotional – and physical – trauma of being taken from her biological mother would never leave Liz. She constantly wondered: what does my real mum look like? Will she come back for me? Why did she abandon me?

Years later, aged 28, Liz reconnected with her birth mother – and finally learned the shocking truth surrounding her adoption. Yvonne had not abandoned her daughter. As a young unmarried mum, Yvonne had been deemed unfit as a parent and been made to give up her child against her will.

Liz was one of at least 185,000 victims of forced adoption between 1949 and 1976 in England and Wales. Although reunited, Liz and Yvonne are still struggling to cope with the agony resulting from their devastating separation.

  • Delly Duck SIBLING GROUP EDITION: Why Some Children Cannot Stay With Their Birth Families: A foster care and adoption story book for children, to … Kinship Care and Special…

    02
In response to popular demand, Holly Marlow has created this special sibling/twin edition of her multi-award winning book, Delly Duck.

When Delly Duck lays two eggs, she is excited for them to hatch. But she doesn’t really know how to keep eggs safe, or how to look after the ducklings when they hatch. See how a concerned goose tries to help Delly to learn how to care for the ducklings, in this sensitively-written adoption story.

Delly Duck: Why A Little Chick Couldn’t Stay With His Birth Mother and this special siblings/twins edition are intended to help support and stimulate discussion around some of the questions an adopted or fostered child (or another child trying to understand adoption) may have. The story can be used to help answer difficult and emotive questions, such as “Why can’t I live with my birth mother?” and “Why didn’t someone just teach her how to parent me safely?”

No two adoption stories are the same, so symbolism has been used that is open to appropriate interpretation by the parent, kinship carer, social worker, play therapist, teacher or other adult reading this story with a child. The beautifully-illustrated story includes animal characters that may reflect common behaviours and responsibilities of several of the key people involved in an adoption process. Delly is a likeable duck, who sadly makes some poor choices and struggles to care for her ducklings in a consistently safe way.

The book includes a helpful guide to the symbolism, with suggestions as to how the various metaphors can be used to support therapeutic life story work and answer questions about the challenges faced by a child’s birth parents, such as memory or concentration problems, addiction and/or poor or inconsistent role models during their own childhoods.
Above all, it portrays that all adults involved want the best for adopted children, and that they are so very loved.

Delly Duck is a popular story with kinship (special guardianship) families and connected carers, particularly when used alongside Marlow’s award-winning bestseller, Room in the Nest. It will appeal to readers of The Blanket Bears, The Invisible String, and the works of Sarah Naish and Todd Parr.

Praise for Delly Duck: Why A Little Chick Couldn’t Stay With His Birth Mother

“One of the best Adoption books of all time” – BookAuthority

“…a beautifully illustrated children’s story book, explaining big issues like adoption and fostering, in an age appropriate way.” – We Made A Wish adoption magazine

“…Delly Duck is a great choice for adopted and fostered children to explain adoption or support therapeutic life story work. The book can be used to help answer difficult and emotive questions…” – Maggie and Rose Book Adventurers

“A fantastic book for Parents, Foster Parents, Adoptive Parents, Legal Guardians, Kinship Carers, Social Workers, Play Therapists or Teachers… I can thoroughly recommend this book to anyone who is adopting, fostering, or is a child’s Legal Guardian… the book shows the love, and loss of the birth parent, and highlights the fact that sometimes a birth parent is simply not equipped with the necessary skills to keep their child safe consistently.
This beautiful, sensitively written story explains why a child may need to be removed from their birth parent, and explores in a gentle way the emotions felt by parent and child, and the roles other people play in protecting the child, and offering the child a loving, safe environment…” – Icing on the Bake

  • A for Adoption: An Exploration of the Adoption Experience for Families and Professionals (Tavistock Clinic Series)

    01

The experience of adoption―both adopting and being adopted―can stir up deep emotional pain, often related to loss and early trauma. A for Adoption provides insight and support to those families and individuals facing these complex processes and challenges.

Drawing on both a psychoanalytic, theoretical framework and first-hand accounts of adopters, adoptees, and professionals within the adoption process, Alison Roy responds to the need for further and consistent support for adoptive parents and children, to help inform and understand the reality of their everyday lives. This book explores both the current and historical context of adoption, as well as its depiction within literature, before addressing issues such as conflict in relationships, the impact of significant trauma and loss, attachment and the importance of early relationships, and contact with birth families.

Uniquely, this book addresses the experiences of, and provides support for, both adoptive professionals and families. It focuses on understanding rather than apportioning blame, and responds to a plea from a parent who requested “a book to help me understand my child better”.

An adoption ceremony – often referred to as a Celebration Hearing, Pronouncement Hearing or Adoption Visit – can be a helpful tool to support therapeutic life story work and to help adopted children to understand what happened when a judge made important decisions about their lives.
This story is designed to show children what to expect at their adoption ceremony and to reassure them that the decision has already been made and will not change at the ceremony. It may be used to explain the purpose of the Celebration Hearing to a child’s friends and classmates, and also serves as a thoughtful gift to help a child to understand and process the ceremony after the fact.

This story is suitable for adoption from foster care, not private adoption.

Praise for Room in the Nest

She explains how the Caring Goose always tries to help the parents out first and give them guidance and that she is not trying to rip families apart but instead shows compassion and works to try and keep families together. Still, sometimes that is not always best for the children. Room in the Nest is a heartwarming picture book that teaches children about foster care, foster placements, long-term fostering, kinship care, reunification, adoption, and a broad look at family court. This is a beautiful story to share with children that have to go through this process to help ease their fears and for other children to understand what happens if someone they know goes into foster care. • A journey through a psychotic breakdown

    01

“A journey through a psychotic breakdown” shatters taboos about coping with mental illness

Written in first-person, ‘A journey through a psychotic breakdown’ by Douglas Gonçalves, tells the moving account of the executive when he faced a psychotic episode that made him a spectator of his own fate and changed his life forever.

São Paulo, December 2022 – In 2004, Douglas Gonçalves, a 34-year-old hotelier from São Paulo, embarked on a personal journey after having a psychotic episode. He now faces the transformations he experienced, shedding light on his memories, his past, his traumas, and untying the plots of destiny.

The book is a memoir about his experience of having a psychotic episode. It is divided into three parts: the first part describes the onset of his psychosis, the second part describes his time in a psychiatric hospital, and the third part describes his recovery, the narrative culminates in the treatments for the disease, through an engaging and dynamic reading free of prejudice.

Throughout the book, Gonçalves writes honestly and openly about his experiences. He does not shy away from describing the difficult and painful aspects of his psychosis, but he also writes about the hope and healing that he found through treatment. The author’s account provokes reflections on the current causes that trigger this disease and demystify the issue. According to medical statistics, one in four people will have mental health problems throughout their lives, which will greatly affect their personal, professional, and social existence.

    Spirituality and Health

In the author’s opinion, the narrative aims at warning people who are prone to develop psychotic episodes, and helping families to quickly identify them. It also wishes to alert doctors to a more patient-centred treatment approach: an associative diffusion between spirituality and health, which refers to the relevance of spirituality in the treatment of mental illnesses.

    Ancestry and affection

The narrative was written as a journal, in a simple and direct, sometimes humorous style. It highlights challenging moments, as the dramatic experience lived by the author in New York during the September 11 attacks; marriage concerns; familiar conflicts; and professional dilemmas, all leading to the breakdown. Gonçalves offers the reader a moving analysis, so much so in the post-pandemic world.

“When we face crucial situations and repeatedly disrespect the limits of our body, the brain finds ways to “turn us off” through the self-preservation instinct”, the author examines. And he adds: “The journey is individual but enriching. The search for understanding the deeper psychological causes, change in habits, spiritual re-education, acknowledging that nothing happens by chance: these were fundamental factors to reinstate the balance of the biological, psychological and energetic bodies”, he concludes.

“A Journey Through a Psychotic Breakdown”
Honest and raw: The author’s account of his psychotic breakdown is honest and raw, and it provides a unique and personal perspective on mental illness.
Empowering: The author’s journey to recovery is empowering, and it shows that it is possible to overcome mental illness and live a full and meaningful life.

    07
TWENTIETH ANNIVERSARY EDITION, UPDATED AND EXPANDED

When Saints, Scholars, and Schizophrenics was published twenty years ago, it became an instant classic-a beautifully written study tracing the social disintegration of “Ballybran,” a small village on the Dingle Peninsula in Ireland. In this richly detailed and sympathetic book, Nancy Scheper-Hughes explores the symptoms of the community’s decline: emigration, malaise, unwanted celibacy, damaging patterns of childrearing, fear of intimacy, suicide, and schizophrenia. Following a recent return to “Ballybran,” Scheper-Hughes reflects in a new preface and epilogue on the well-being of the community and on her attempts to reconcile her responsibility to honest ethnography with respect for the people who shared their homes and their secrets with her.
