    • The Rifle: Combat Stories from America’s Last WWII Veterans, Told Through an M1 Garand

      04
It all started because of a rifle.

The Rifle is an inspirational story and hero’s journey of a 28-year-old U.S. Marine, Andrew Biggio, who returned home from combat in Afghanistan and Iraq, full of questions about the price of war. He found answers from those who survived the costliest war of all — WWII veterans.

It began when Biggio bought a 1945 M1 Garand Rifle, the most common rifle used in WWII, to honor his great uncle, a U.S. Army soldier who died on the hills of the Italian countryside. When Biggio showed the gun to his neighbor, WWII veteran Corporal Joseph Drago, it unlocked memories Drago had kept unspoken for 50 years. On the spur of the moment, Biggio asked Drago to sign the rifle. Thus began this Marine’s mission to find as many WWII veterans as he could, get their signatures on the rifle, and document their stories.

For two years, Biggio traveled across the country to interview America’s last-living WWII veterans. Each time he put the M1 Garand Rifle in their hands, their eyes lit up with memories triggered by holding the weapon that had been with them every step of the war. With each visit and every story told to Biggio, the veterans signed their names to the rifle. 96 signatures now cover that rifle, each a reminder of the price of war and the courage of our soldiers.

      Publishers Weekly starred review

“This is a stunning book, so rare and so beautiful. I cannot recommend it highly enough.” –Matthew A. LaPine

Suffering has been made holy by Christ’s proximity to it.

This is the story of Christ’s nearness to my own suffering–my mental breakdown, my journey to the psych ward, my long, slow, painful recovery–and how Christ will use even our agony and despair to turn us into servants and guests of the mercy offered in his gospel.

We cannot answer suffering. And yet suffering demands an answer. If Jesus is the answer to suffering, what kind of answer is Jesus? Everything that could be taken from a person was taken from him. The worst things a person could be made to see and feel were seen and felt by Christ. All of this came to a point in the nails driven into his hands and became a word that cannot be unspoken–his body broken and his blood poured out for us. Suffering has been made holy by Christ’s proximity to it.

    • Deal & District at War

      04

Much emphasis has been given to the Second World War experiences of East Kent’s ‘frontline’ towns of Dover, Folkestone and Thanet, but the ancient port and town of Deal suffered equally from enemy bombing and shelling. Deal bore the disadvantage of being located opposite the notorious Goodwin Sands, where many vessels and even some aircraft were lost. From the time of the Dunkirk evacuation in May/June 1940 until after D-Day some four years later, the residents of Deal withstood all that the enemy threw at them. Richly illustrated, Deal and District at War recounts many unique and controversial events which include: a German coastal raid in Sandwich Bay when at least 1 British soldier was snatched; an enemy pilot entertained by a local family after being shot down; cases of smuggling and ‘services rendered’ by Walmer lifeboat; and the world-famous ‘Lifeboat Doctor’ James Hall. This book will evoke powerful memories for those whose families experienced the war and provide fascinating reading for anyone interested in the history of Deal and District.

    • Die Smiling: A Memoir: The Sorrows and Joys on A Journey to Dignitas

Die Smiling is a rare and intimate account of one man’s journey to Dignitas in Zurich and his
ultimate triumph over suffering and disease.

Told with wit and candour, Julie Casson traces her husband Nigel’s extraordinary journey
from diagnosis of motor neurone disease to his death.

Successful businessman and father of three, Nigel battles the degenerative disease with
boundless courage and gritty good humour, until, faced with the unimaginable torture of a
slow, living death – his spirit crushed, his body a tomb – he takes control. He decides to go to
Dignitas to end his life, while he is still able to die smiling.

The family prepares for this enormous logistical and emotional challenge: the gruelling
Dignitas process and the eight-hundred-mile road trip to Switzerland. They complete it with
pragmatism and humour. Denying the disease its victory and choosing his own cure, Nigel
dies happily, in the arms of his wife and children.

This is a thought-provoking and deeply moving book, where love, family, dignity and choice
conquer adversity. It sits in the heart of the debate on assisted dying and raises questions
about the right to put an end to suffering and the right to choose how life should end.

    • How Good Humans Sell: The Proven Path to B2B Sales Success

      03
Most salespeople worry about seeming too pushy when they sell. They remember when they have been victims of aggressive sales tactics in the past, so now they vow to sell differently. As humans, we’re wired for survival so we avoid experiences that make us feel uncomfortable. However, avoiding selling is disastrous to business. Catherine Brown, Founder of the ExtraBold Sales system, understands why Good Humans struggle to sell. Learning a reliable sales process is only half of the success equation. The other half is about us, the sellers—our individual values, habits, beliefs, and goals. In this book, Catherine explains how social science helps us sell well. Her approach to selling without sleaze or cheese invigorates salespeople, so they can consistently overcome their fear of seeming pushy, reach more prospects, and close more business.

What people are saying about How Good Humans Sell:

      • “What I love about How Good Humans Sell is that the entire book is rooted in experience. Success? Yes. Losses? Even better. Catherine gives us a ‘look in the mirror’ complete with explanations and how to go fix what’s wrong in our own sales strategy. And it’s honest and authentic because she’s done it herself throughout her career.” Jason Nadal, Owner of Centrado Advising and Tech Startup Coach across Europe, Middle East, and North America
      • “Catherine identifies that B2B sales teams are failing for two reasons: false beliefs we hold as true, and the sales process we use. The first reason is reinforced by the fact that we tend to look for sales solutions outside ourselves, instead of within…The second reason for failing, the sales process we use (no matter how good the process) must be backed by the proper mindset to be effective. This book exceptionally guides the reader through both, resulting in the superb equipping of any person desiring to optimize their sales success.” Rob Garibay, Business Growth Expert, Clarity Pro
      • “The most important thing you can do to increase the effectiveness of your sales team is to read “How Good Humans Sell” together. Talk about it. Implement it. I’ve spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on sales training – but if you don’t incorporate the concepts in Catherine’s book, you are building on sand.” Gene Hopper, Founder and Partner, The Mettise Group

    • The Clapham Train Accident: Causes, Context and the Corporate Memory Challenge

      01
Clapham was a pivotal point in British railway history. Much technology had been invented and applied to accident prevention by 1988; much more was to come. The Clapham Train Accident considers Clapham in its wider context, using official reports and expert interviews to describe both the causes and the terrible effects. It looks beyond the railway to the external factors acting not only on British Rail, but also the government of the time, and considers the safety improvements that came about as a result. Finally, the book brings the story up to date and looks at why the lessons learned over thirty years ago still need to be retained in an industry where the baton of safety is all-too-easily dropped during re-organisation, re-branding and after the departure of those who lived through darker days to make ours shine more brightly. The concatenation of events, the errors, the reorganisations, the financial constraints, that led to Clapham could happen to any business in any industry. On the morning of 12 December 1988, they happened to the railway. The Clapham Train Accident will act as a cautionary tale for safety practitioners old and new, not just in rail, but also other safety critical industries. It will help readers think actions through to all consequences, helping them too to make safer decisions, particularly when changing a system, technology or method of working

    • Quantum Computing for Everyone (Mit Press)

      08
An accessible introduction to an exciting new area in computation, explaining such topics as qubits, entanglement, and quantum teleportation for the general reader.

Quantum computing is a beautiful fusion of quantum physics and computer science, incorporating some of the most stunning ideas from twentieth-century physics into an entirely new way of thinking about computation. In this book, Chris Bernhardt offers an introduction to quantum computing that is accessible to anyone who is comfortable with high school mathematics. He explains qubits, entanglement, quantum teleportation, quantum algorithms, and other quantum-related topics as clearly as possible for the general reader. Bernhardt, a mathematician himself, simplifies the mathematics as much as he can and provides elementary examples that illustrate both how the math works and what it means.

Bernhardt introduces the basic unit of quantum computing, the qubit, and explains how the qubit can be measured; discusses entanglement–which, he says, is easier to describe mathematically than verbally–and what it means when two qubits are entangled (citing Einstein’s characterization of what happens when the measurement of one entangled qubit affects the second as “spooky action at a distance”); and introduces quantum cryptography. He recaps standard topics in classical computing–bits, gates, and logic–and describes Edward Fredkin’s ingenious billiard ball computer. He defines quantum gates, considers the speed of quantum algorithms, and describes the building of quantum computers. By the end of the book, readers understand that quantum computing and classical computing are not two distinct disciplines, and that quantum computing is the fundamental form of computing. The basic unit of computation is the qubit, not the bit.

    • Chinese Brush Painting through the Seasons

      02

Chinese brush painting is a traditional style of painting that has evolved over many centuries. Artists use ink and colour pigments to paint onto rice paper or silk.

An important characteristic of this kind of painting is holding and directing the brush in the right way to produce strokes that are delicate and refined. The four co-authors of this book – Sun Chenggang, Ning Xiangying, Ning Jialu and Miao Hongbo – are particularly gifted proponents of this style, which has connections with traditional calligraphy.

Chinese brush painting typically includes themes such as birds, plants and flowers, landscapes, fruit and vegetables and fish. This book explores these themes through the four seasons, with the peony depicted in spring, the lotus flower in summer, the vegetable harvest in autumn and the bamboo bud in winter. Many of the subjects are symbolic and have connotations of good fortune, auspiciousness, good health, a long life, a good harvest, a flourishing family, wealth – even immortality!

Explained in the introduction to each project, the symbolism is followed by clear, step-by-step instructions and illustrations. There is a short section at the beginning of the book describing tools, materials and techniques to help readers achieve the almost ethereal beauty and delicacy of this style of painting.
