    08

Read Costa Award-winning author Christie Watson’s incredible No. 1 Sunday Times bestselling memoir of nursing today.

‘It made me cry. It made me think. It made me laugh’ Adam Kay, author of This is Going to Hurt and Twas the Nightshift Before Christmas

Christie Watson was a nurse for twenty years. Taking us from birth to death and from A&E to the mortuary, The Language of Kindness is an astounding account of a profession defined by acts of care, compassion and kindness.

We watch Christie as she nurses a premature baby who has miraculously made it through the night, we stand by her side during her patient’s agonising heart-lung transplant, and we hold our breath as she washes the hair of a child fatally injured in a fire, attempting to remove the toxic smell of smoke before the grieving family arrive.

In our most extreme moments, when life is lived most intensely, Christie is with us. She is a guide, mentor and friend. And in these dark days of division and isolationism, she encourages us all to stretch out a hand.

  • Maid for Advertising: A Billionaire Boss, Enemies to Lovers Romance

    08
Working as a maid on a luxury yacht certainly isn’t Urvi’s idea of a dream job, but she needs money, fast. As a student at the Royal academy, who’s been cut off by her family for choosing music instead of medicine, she needs every penny of the exorbitant fee the powerful advertising executive, Jack Bailey, is willing to pay. So what if she thought Jack was asking her out but offered her a job instead? So what if she thought they had a connection during all those late night chats they had at the bar where she works? Jack and his mega yacht are clearly more out of her league than she realized.
A bit of banter with a barmaid obviously meant nothing to him if the cold shoulder he’s now giving her is anything to go by. Urvi can’t afford pride if she wants to survive, and, with the way her diabetes control has been lately, survival is fast becoming her number one priority.

  • Scientific Advertising: Complete and Unabridged

    08
The time has come when advertising has in some hands reached the status of a science. It is based on fixed principles and is reasonably exact. The causes and effects have been analyzed until they are well understood. The correct method of procedure have been proved and established. We know what is most effective, and we act on basic law. Advertising, once a gamble, has thus become, under able direction, one of the safest business ventures. Certainly no other enterprise with comparable possibilities need involve so little risk. Therefore, this book deals, not with theories and opinions, but with well-proved principles and facts. It is written as a text book for students and a safe guide for advertisers. Every statement has been weighed. The book is confined to establish fundamentals.

  • Scientific Advertising: 21 advertising, headline and copywriting techniques

    08

Understand and use the concepts of successful advertising

Whether you are considering a career in advertising or trying to find the best way to market your product, start with Hopkins and then move onto the rest.

In this powerful book he explains the process to get (and measure) results from your advertising.

Claude Hopkins wrote ‘Scientific Advertising’ in 1923, but his insight into consumer behaviour still holds. The aim was to explain the rules of advertising and what makes consumers buy, so that advertising returns would become a certainty and not a guess. Learn how to use his techniques to write adverts which sell with certainty.

Hopkins clearly shows how to write copy, provides methods for testing it and shows how evidence based advertising gets results in a measurable and cost effective way.

A must read if you are in business, sales or advertising. Hopkins shows what makes us buy and how you can make it happen.

This edition also includes examples of adverts produced by Claude Hopkins through his career.

Nobody should be allowed to have anything to do with advertising until he has read this book seven times. It changed the course of my life. David Ogilvy

Within this book Hopkins shows a variety of tested techniques which he had used through his successful career in advertising, including:

    • How advertising laws are established – What the professionals in advertising already know and how we can use this knowledge to develop better ads.
    • Just salesmanship – What is advertising and how is it best used?
    • Offer service – The best ways to offer service to increase sales.
    • Mail order advertising – What it teaches us and how we can apply it to our own adverts.
    • Headlines -A lot of headlines get a poor response in email marketing, websites and adverts. Learn how to increase your response rate.
    • Psychology – Use Hopkins experience to direct people to buy and use your product.
    • Being specific – Are you being specific enough in your advertising? Hopkins shows that by using specific facts you can increase sales and out perform your competitors.
    • Tell your full story – How telling your story is important and why some advertisers make the mistake of missing out on this.
    • Art in advertising – Should we use bespoke artwork or tried and tested visuals?
    • Things too costly – What strategies are too costly to attempt in advertising.
    • Information – How to give the consumer the best information to help them buy.
    • Strategy – Rules for directing a campaign.
    • Use of samples – How getting samples into peoples hands can increase sales.
    • Getting distribution – Hopkins lays out how to get national distribution by starting small.
    • Test campaigns – How to test different campaigns on the same audience.
    • Leaning on dealers – Ways to get dealers to help your campaign
    • Individuality – Set yourself apart from competitors and what your tone should be.
    • Negative advertising – Will it help your sales?
    • Letter writing – Hopkins shows how to write a sales letter.
    • A name that helps – How does a product name impact sales?
    • Good business – See how good business impacts on consumer behaviour.

    Excerpts from the book

The only purpose of advertising is to make sales. It is profitable or unprofitable according to its actual sales.

I never ask people to buy. The ads all offer service, perhaps a free sample. They sound altruistic. But they get a reading and action. No selfish appeal can do that.

I set down these findings solely for the purpose of aiding others to start far up the heights I scaled.

  • 1 Page Online Marketing Gameplan: Get More Leads and Make More Money Using Social Media & Online

    08
If I were to give any other title to this book, I would’ve called it ‘A guide to social media marketing for new businesses and entrepreneurs’ or probably ‘Digital Marketing, How to do it right!’. However, I had to settle for a catchier title for obvious marketing reasons.

Look, we all know the challenges with our business. When I talk to a new businesses, in majority of the cases I come across a pre-set number of queries. ‘How I grow my company’, ‘how I get more leads’, ‘how much budget should I allocate to digital marketing’ are some of the questions which should be addressed even before you start your online marketing journey. These questions should be addressed a as part of your strategy. Because strategy should dictate your competitive advantage and it is important to keep your strategy simple if you are a start-up, a new business or a small business. As your business grows, your strategy will inevitably grow more complex over time.

We’ve talked about execution too. Find out which campaign works well on Social Media / PPC and SEO and throughout the book I addressed many of the prevalent queries. These are typically budget, audience targeting, client retention, and most importantly getting your online marketing strategy (and execution) right, so that you don’t diverge from your core business objectives.

Selling a product is very different then selling a service online. The underlying objective and difference here is that a product is a tangible object whereas service is value added through time intangible skills and expertise.

    • Products are designed to meet the needs of the customer. So when you’re selling a product you would want to highlight the features / attributes and display the items appropriately online or in store. With product it’s easier for customers to appreciates its value. In the unlikely circumstances if they don’t like a product they can simply return it. They can also leave a review online for prospective customers and in turn the prospective customers can make a decision on the back of the reviews as well.
    • Service based selling: are usually less expensive to operate than product businesses because you’re not having to maintain an inventory and it typically requires building relationship with the customers when necessary. Getting the pricing right for a service based service is often time consuming. This will vary between industries and experience of those operating in these industries. It is also more difficult to get ratings because it takes longer to get a service completed or to take effect.

In this amazing book you will also discover:

    • The type of social media marketing campaigns you can use to dissect your marketing strategy
    • How to use PPC, SEO and Social Media ads effectively for your digital marketing campaigns
    • A step by step guide to create your own personalised online marketing plan that fits within a page (hence the name1 Page Online Marketing Gameplan)
    • Get results on your digital marketing efforts from get go
    • Find the budget and pricing that’s right for you

Edited by Dave Chaffey, one of Europe’s top thinkers in this area, Internet Marketing links marketing theory with case studies on cutting edge companies such as Dell, eBay and Facebook, to help students to understand digital marketing in the real world.

In this major update, you will learn best practice in applying digital media channels such as affiliate marketing, online PR and search engine marketing, with each chapter containing a new ‘Digital Marketing in Practice’ interview.

This text comes with a wealth of online resources to be found at www.pearsoned.co.uk/chaffey with links to video material on YouTube and FT.com. The site also comes with multiple choice questions for every chapter and annotated weblinks, providing a rich learning experience.

“Chaffey builds upon what is already the ‘first stop’ for anyone wanting to get to grips with Internet and Digital marketing. Ian Harris, Digital Marketer

  • Marketing Plan Template & Example: How to write a marketing plan: 2 (Business plan)

    08
Do you want to create a better marketing plan for your business which will ultimately result in better marketing and more customers for your business?

If you do, then this book is for you. This book is written with entrepreneurs and small business owners in mind. If you are an entrepreneur or a small business owner, creating a marketing plan is very important because the better prepared you are, the better your marketing campaigns will do.

In this book, you get a marketing plan template and two examples of marketing plans. You also get practical advice on how to plan and fill out every section of a marketing plan document.

Go ahead and get this book, and let’s help you create better marketing plans which will improve your company’s overall marketing success.

For what kind of businesses can you create a marketing plan using this book?

With the strategies in this marketing book, you can create a business plan for a restaurant or diner, coffee shop, barbershop, nightclub, local event, business selling t-shirts, most kinds of stores ranging from boutiques to grocery stores to jewelry shops, animal care or grooming, lawn care or landscaping businesses, moving businesses, gym, frozen yogurt or ice cream shop, a deli, liquor store or a sandwich shop, a beauty salon or a hair salon, a spa, a daycare business, a hardware store, commercial cleaning or residential cleaning, car wash, general contractor business, dog walking or pet sitting, martial arts studio, or a dance studio.

Here is a list of potential online businesses for which you can create a marketing plan using this marketing plan book: blogging, affiliate marketing, e-learning, create a channel on YouTube, become an author and sell books on Amazon and the Kindle, or become a freelancer or a local concierge.

Also recently added in the last update of this book is a marketing plan sample since many people commented that they wanted a marketing plan example. Although for my taste as an entrepreneur, I rather give you lots of practical planning strategies and theory that you can use in the real world instead of having a marketing plan template or workbook to write your marketing plan from. After all, a marketing plan is just a document. But to make your business a success, you will have to do it in the real world. So when you try to figure out how to create a business plan, don’t just focus on the marketing plan document. Instead, focus on a plan for the real world with actionable and effective strategies.

  • Landmark Thucydides

    08
Thucydides called his account of two decades of war between Athens and Sparta “a possession for all time,” and indeed it is the first and still the most famous work in the Western historical tradition.

Considered essential reading for generals, statesmen, and liberally educated citizens for more than 2,000 years, The Peloponnesian War is a mine of military, moral, political, and philosophical wisdom.

However, this classic book has long presented obstacles to the uninitiated reader. Written centuries before the rise of modern historiography, Thucydides’ narrative is not continuous or linear. His authoritative chronicle of what he considered the greatest war of all time is rigorous and meticulous, yet omits the many aids to comprehension modern readers take for granted—such as brief biographies of the story’s main characters, maps and other visual enhancements, and background on the military, cultural, and political traditions of ancient Greece.

Robert Strassler’s new edition amends these omissions, and not only provides a new coherence to the narrative overall but effectively reconstructs the lost cultural context that Thucydides shared with his original audience. Based on the venerable Richard Crawley translation, updated and revised for modern readers, The Landmark Thucydides includes a vast array of superbly designed and presented maps, brief informative appendices by outstanding classical scholars on subjects of special relevance to the text, explanatory marginal notes on each page, an index of unprecedented subtlety and depth, and numerous other useful features. Readers will find that with this edition they can dip into the text at any point and be immediately oriented with regard to the geography, season, date, and stage of the conflict.

In any list of the Great Books of Western Civilization, The Peloponnesian War stands near the top. This handsome, elegant, and authoritative new edition will ensure that its greatness is appreciated by future generations.

  • Cold War: For Forty-five Years the World Held its Breath

    08

Cold War is the story of the half-century since the end of the Second World War – the story of our lives. Its framework is the confrontation, military and ideological, between two great powers that dominated the world during these years. It is a story of crises and conflict on a global scale: from the Berlin Blockade and the Cuban Missile Crisis, to the tanks in the streets of Warsaw, Budapest and Prague, to spies, student riots and encounters in space.
In Cold War, Jeremy Isaacs and Taylor Downing record epic history through the detail of individual human experience: the recollections not only of statesmen whose decisions led to these momentous events, but also of the ordinary men and women whose lives were bound up in these years of conflict. Cold War is the first comprehensive history for the general reader to benefit from the recent opening of Soviet, East European and Chinese archives as well as formerly classified American documents. In a driving narrative that it both gripping and informative, the true story of the Cold War can at last be told.

  • The Peloponnesian War (Oxford World’s Classics)

    08
‘The greatest historian that ever lived’

Such was Macaulay’s verdict on Thucydides (c.460-400 BC) and his history of the Peloponnesian War, the momentous struggle between Athens and Sparta as rival powers and political systems that lasted for twenty-seven years from 431 to 404 BC, involved virtually the whole of the Greek world, and ended in the fall of Athens. Thucydides himself was a participant in the war; to his history he brings an awesome intellect, brilliant narrative, and penetrating analysis of the nature of power, as it affects both states and individuals.

Of his own work Thucydides wrote: ‘I shall be content if [my history] is judged useful by those who will want to have a clear understanding of what happened – and, such is the human condition, will happen again … It was composed as a permanent legacy, not a showpiece for a single hearing.’ So it has proved. Of the prose writers of Greece and Rome Thucydides has had more lasting influence on western thought than all but Plato and Aristotle. This new edition combines a masterly translation with comprehensive supporting material.
ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World’s Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford’s commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

    08

History re-written: has the 540-year-old mystery been solved?

‘The totality of evidence revealed is astonishing. Following the discovery of King Richard III’s grave in a car park in Leicester in 2012, The Missing Princes Project will again rewrite the history books, redrawing what we know about Richard III and Henry VII and pressing the reset button of history.’ – Philippa Langley

In the summer of 1483, two brothers were seen playing in the grounds of the Tower of London, where they’d been lodged by the King’s Council – their uncle, the future Richard III, its chief member. From there the boys seem to vanish from the historical record, and so one of the greatest and most intriguing mysteries of British history was born. Over the centuries, historians have debated tirelessly about the fate of Edward V and Richard, Duke of York: did they die in the Tower? Did they escape? Were they murdered?

After astonishing success in locating and laying to rest Richard III, Philippa Langley turns her forensic focus onto this enduring case, teaming up with criminal investigative experts, historians, archivists and researchers from around the world in her groundbreaking The Missing Princes Project. Following years of extensive research, investigation and formidable dedication, this landmark study has finally reached completion, with stunning conclusions.

In The Princes in the Tower: Solving History’s Greatest Cold Case, join Langley as she records the painstaking investigative work undertaken and lays out the evidence to reveal the remarkable untold story. Here she is able, finally, to address any injustice and solve the mystery surrounding the Princes in the Tower once and for all.

Compelling in breadth and detail, this book asks its readers to re-examine what they thought they knew about one of our greatest historical mysteries. Perfect for fans of the period and the likes of Dan Jones, Philippa Gregory and Janina Ramirez.
