Ukraine has fought along classical lines, seeking victory through battle. Russia has adopted a more total approach, combining conventional battles with attacks on Ukraine’s socio-economic structure. Freedman explains why the apparently superior Russian force has been unable to defeat and subjugate Ukraine.”

There are worse places than hell…

Hotel Beresford is a grand, old building, just outside the city. And any soul is welcome.

Danielle Ortega works nights, singing at whatever dive bar will offer her a gig. She gets by, keeping to herself. Sam Walker gambles and drinks, and can’t keep his hands to himself. Now he’s tied up in a shoe closet with a dent in his head that matches Danielle’s broken ashtray.

The man in 731 has been dead for two days and his dog has not stopped barking. Two doors down, the couple who always smokes on the window ledge will mysteriously fall.

Upstairs, in the penthouse, Mr Balliol sees it all. He can peer into every crevice of every floor of the hotel from his screen-filled suite. He witnesses humanity and inhumanity in all its forms: loneliness, passion and desperation in equal measure. All the ingredients he needs to make a deal.

When Danielle returns home one night to find Sam gone, a series of sinister events begins to unfold. But strange things often occur at Hotel Beresford, and many are only a distraction to hide something much, much darker…

  • Enamel Advertising Signs (Shire Album): 3 (Shire Library)

    06
Enamel signs emerged as the jewel in the crown of British advertising in the late Victorian era, commanding public attention for over half a century before technological, economic and social change combined to render them redundant. From the 1950s onwards they disappeared from the original locations on shop walls, to be replaced by hoardings. Of the millions of enamel signs produced between 1880 and 1950 onlya few thousand survived, often commandeered for secondary uses as ‘free’materials to build huts and fencing on allotment gardens. By the early 1960s a few trend-setting collectors started to rescue them as ornamental items. With the birth of the restored steam railway, some signs found their way back to original locations, lending ‘authentic’ atomsphere to station platforms, and many of the industrial museums have followed suit to great effect.

  • The Vietnam War: 1956–75 (Essential Histories)

    08
In this fully illustrated introduction, leading Vietnam War historian Dr Andrew Wiest provides a concise overview of America’s most divisive war.

America entered the Vietnam War certain of its Cold War doctrines and convinced of its moral mission to save the world from the advance of communism. However, the war was not at all what the United States expected. Dr Andrew Wiest examines how, outnumbered and outgunned, the North Vietnamese and Viet Cong forces resorted to a guerrilla war based on the theories of Mao Zedong of China, while the US responded with firepower and overwhelming force. Drawing on the latest research for this new edition, Wiest examines the brutal and prolonged resultant conflict, and how its consequences would change America forever, leaving the country battered and unsure as it sought to face the challenges of the final acts of the Cold War. As for Vietnam, the conflict would continue long after the US had exited its military adventure in Southeast Asia.

Updated and revised, with full-colour maps and new images throughout, this is an accessible introduction to the most important event of the “American Century.”

Those incredible once in a life time experiences that occur when you are at one with nature, swimming at sunrise or sunset in fresh water are worth recording. The poetry it inspires in your soul and the clarity of thought that occurs. Include the research you do, the places you fantasise of swimming in, the local lake, the great rivers or tropical oceans or off the coast of freezing Iceland. Note down the recommendations and keep your dreams on paper, give yourself some targets for how many swims you’ll complete this year and how you hope you will feel, mentally and physically once you complete your goals. Keep a note of your kit and the local amenities nearby, a fantastic local cafe where you can get a great, warming coffee afterwards (nothing tastes better!) or a local bar with a refreshing bar to hang out in while you dry off. This journal will record your swims and inform your swims, you, or someone you know was ” Born to Swim Wild”

  • Bravery: A Baby Sea Turtle’s First Adventure

Bravery: A Baby Sea Turtle’s First Adventure is a children’s book, beautifully illustrated with full page watercolor paintings. It tells the story of a loggerhead sea turtle hatchling figuring out what/who she is as she begins to emerge from her egg, deep underneath the sand. She must navigate her way to the surface of the sand, along with her siblings, and then make her way safely to the ocean to begin her adventurous life as a sea turtle.

The story is told from the baby sea turtle’s perspective. The imagery of the journey is both realistic and creative. Author, Bec Martin, has volunteered for several years with the Topsail Turtle Project, a program of The Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center, located in Surf City, North Carolina (https://www.seaturtlehospital.org). As a volunteer, Bec has observed many sea turtle nests and has been present when the hatchlings have emerged and made their way to the ocean.

Book foreward provided by Kathy Zagzebski, Executive Director of The Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center.

Bec hopes to inspire children all over the world to be brave, aided by the memory of this endearing story.
