‘Atkinson on her finest form. A marvel of plate-spinning narrative knowhow, a peak performance of consummate control.’ OBSERVER

‘This is the perfect novel for uncertain times.’ THE TIMES

‘I can think of few writers other than Dickens who can match it’ SUNDAY TIMES

    ‘Brilliant’ RICHARD OSMAN

‘Kate Atkinson is simply one of the best writers working today, anywhere in the world’ GILLIAN FLYNN

    ____

1926, and in a country still recovering from the Great War, London has become the focus for a delirious new nightlife. In the clubs of Soho, peers of the realm rub shoulders with starlets, foreign dignitaries with gangsters, and girls sell dances for a shilling a time.

At the heart of this glittering world is notorious Nellie Coker, ruthless but also ambitious to advance her six children, including the enigmatic eldest, Niven whose character has been forged in the crucible of the Somme. But success breeds enemies, and Nellie’s empire faces threats from without and within. For beneath the dazzle of Soho’s gaiety, there is a dark underbelly, a world in which it is all too easy to become lost.

With her unique Dickensian flair, Kate Atkinson brings together a glittering cast of characters in a truly mesmeric novel that captures the uncertainty and mutability of life; of a world in which nothing is quite as it seems.
    _____

‘Seduction, betrayal, and larger-than-life characters that will have you hooked until the last page’ SUNDAY TELEGRAPH

‘This book is one to savour, for the energy, for the wit, for the tenderness of characterisation that make Atkinson enduringly popular’ GUARDIAN

‘As vividly filthy, populous, dangerous as anything described by Dickens, but writing is closer to Thackeray’s…Atkinson is a novelist of unrivalled immediacy, authority, and skill.’ FINANCIAL TIMES

  • Shunga: Sex and Pleasure in Japanese Art

    08
Discover Japanese art like no other. Originally created by the artists of the ukiyo-e ‘school of the floating world’ to advertise brothels in 17th-century Yoshiwara, these popular ‘spring pictures’ (shunga) transcended class and gender in Japan for almost 300 years. These tender, humorous and brightly coloured pieces celebrate sexual pleasure in all its forms, culminating in the beautiful, yet graphic, work of iconic artists Utamaro, Hokusai and Kunisada. This catalogue of a major international exhibition aims to answer some key questions about what shunga is and why was it produced. Erotic Japanese art was heavily suppressed in Japan from the 1870s onwards as part of a process of cultural ‘modernisation’ that imported many contemporary western moral values. Only in the last twenty years or so has it been possible to publish unexpurgated examples in Japan and this ground-breaking publication presents this fascinating art in its historical and cultural context for the first time. Within Japan, shunga has continued to influence modern forms of art, including manga, anime and Japanese tattoo art. Drawing on the latest scholarship and featuring over 400 images of works from major public and private collections, this landmark book sheds new light on this unique art form within Japanese social and cultural history. Shunga: sex and pleasure in Japanese art is published to accompany an exhibition at the British Museum from October 2013 to January 2014.

  • Shutout (Rules of the Game)

    08

An Unputdownable College Hockey Brother’s Teammate Romance.

He’s the tall, tattooed stranger I hooked up with on Halloween… and now he’s my new roommate.

After a sudden cross-country move, I’m stuck crashing with my older brother and two of his hockey teammates for sophomore year. I’m not thrilled about shacking up with three athletes and their stinky gear, rotating door of hookups, and tendency to inhale every snack in the house. Just one reason of many that hockey players aren’t my type.

When I walk in the front door with an armload of boxes, however, I’m faced with another problem.

My anonymous fling from two months ago is Tyler Donahue, the superstar goalie for my brother’s team.

We both agree to pretend it never happened, but it quickly becomes clear neither of us can forget. Before I know it, we’re exchanging heated glances from across the room, sending spicy texts at all hours of the night, and stealing kisses behind closed doors.

Since my overprotective brother would freak out, we decide to keep things between us a secret. There’s no point in rocking the boat when I don’t want a boyfriend, and Tyler doesn’t have time for a girlfriend with his grueling hockey schedule. But as our no-strings arrangement turns into something deeper and more meaningful, I begin to see a softer side of the broody, closed-off goalie. He’s gentle, protective, and giving in every sense of the word. Despite what I told myself going in, I’m falling hard and falling fast.

We said we’d keep things casual, but hearts have a way of breaking all the rules.

Shutout is a college hockey romance with lots of spice, swoon, and a happily ever after. It’s the second book in the Rules of the Game series and can be read as a standalone.

Tyler Bell has had no problem playing by the rules for the last three years after a family tragedy set him on the path to priesthood. • Sign Language Among North American Indians: Compared With That Among Other Peoples And Deaf-Mutes

As the few publications on the general subject, possessing more than historic interest, are meager in details and vague in expression, original investigation has been necessary. The high development of communication by gesture among the tribes of North America, and its continued extensive use by many of them, naturally directed the first researches to that continent, with the result that a large body of facts procured from collaborators and by personal examination has now been gathered and classified.

  • Sign Language and Linguistic Universals

    01
Sign languages are of great interest to linguists, because while they are the product of the same brain, their physical transmission differs greatly from that of spoken languages. In this 2006 study, Wendy Sandler and Diane Lillo-Martin compare sign languages with spoken languages, in order to seek the universal properties they share. Drawing on general linguistic theory, they describe and analyze sign language structure, showing linguistic universals in the phonology, morphology, and syntax of sign language, while also revealing non-universal aspects of its structure that must be attributed to its physical transmission system. No prior background in sign language linguistics is assumed, and numerous pictures are provided to make descriptions of signs and facial expressions accessible to readers. Engaging and informative, Sign Language and Linguistic Universals will be invaluable to linguists, psychologists, and all those interested in sign languages, linguistic theory and the universal properties of human languages.

  • SIGN LANGUAGE FOR EVERYONE: A Basic Course in Communication with the Deaf

    08
“Listen with your eyes . . . Sign Language is a method of presenting thoughts via pictures made with one’s hands.” People are adaptable. This trait is particularly useful when one of the five senses is weakened and another becomes more acute to compensate for the weakness. So the deaf, when they hear, hear with their eyes. To communicate to the deaf, then, is to translate the speech of the hearing world into the pictures of the seeing world. “It is an amazing truth that Dr. Cathy Rice has had more influence on the ministry to the deaf, through her teaching of Sign Language and getting others to learn and teach it, than anyone else in the world. All around America, I have attended churches that have someone interpreting sermons for the deaf and teaching a class for the deaf. And in most cases, they learned the Sign Language at the Bill Rice Ranch and were taught by Dr. Cathy. I am so glad she has written this book. It is authoritative and important. God bless it.” ?the late Dr. John R. Rice, Sword of the Lord Ministries, Murfreesboro, Tennessee In 1953, the late Bill Rice, along with his wife, Cathy, founded the Bill Rice Ranch in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, as a ministry to deaf individuals. Since then, the Ranch has been the headquarters for ministries reaching the deaf for Christ both in this country and abroad. The Ranch still maintains camp and conference grounds in Tennessee and in Arizona where deaf young people can attend one of several weeks of camp free of charge. Also, the sign language school that Dr. Rice began continues to train people through classes held at the Ranch each year. Well over eight hundred churches have established deaf ministries as a result of training received at the Ranch.

  • Sign Language: The Study of Deaf People and their Language

    08
The discovery of the importance of sign language in the deaf community is very recent indeed. This book provides a study of the communication and culture of deaf people, and particularly of the deaf community in Britain. The authors’ principal aim is to inform educators, psychologists, linguists and professionals working with deaf people about the rich language the deaf have developed for themselves – a language of movement and space, of the hands and of the eyes, of abstract communication as well as iconic story telling. The first chapters of the book discuss the history of sign language use, its social aspects and the issues surrounding the language acquisition of deaf children (BSL) follows, and the authors also consider how the signs come into existence, change over time and alter their meanings, and how BSL compares and contrasts with spoken languages and other signed languages. Subsequent chapters examine sign language learning from a psychological perspective and other cognitive issues. The book concludes with a consideration of the applications of sign language research, particularly in the contentious field of education. There is still much to be discovered about sign language and the deaf community, but the authors have succeeded in providing an extensive framework on which other researchers can build, from which professionals can develop a coherent practice for their work with deaf people, and from which hearing parents of deaf children can draw the confidence to understand their children’s world.

  • Signs (Studies in Phenomenology and Existential Philosophy)

Speech is a way of tearing out a meaning from an undivided whole.”
Thus does Maurice Merleau-Ponty describe speech in this collection of his important writings on the philosophy of expression, composed during the last decade of his life. For him, expression is a category of human behavior and existence much broader than language alone. He maintains that man is essentially expressive, even prior to speaking: in his silence, gestures, and lived behavior.

  • SIGNS for DEAF DOGS 2 British Sign Language (BSL): Holly’s Story (Let’s Sign BSL)

    08
The first edition of Signs for Deaf Dogs came a from an idea initiated and developed by Suzanne Williams, a deaf dog owner, BSL advocate and Deaf Dog Network (DDN) member to help spread information about dogs who are deaf and also to encourage owners to use some simple hand signals borrowed from the lexicon of British Sign Language (BSL) to aid communication with their pets.

The original 25 signs covered basic needs and this second edition includes an additional 22 signs that have been suggested by deaf dog owners. They are presented one sign per page, clear and simple in flashcard format. This edition is printed in black and white as a more cost-effective way of including more content and is also available on Kindle – ideal for smart phone and tablet.

In addition to extra signs, this edition also contains Holly’s Story – a touching glimpse of a sweet natured dog and her adoptive family, who took Holly in when she was unloved and unwanted.

There are widely accepted hand signals that are used with hearing dogs. The signs contained in this booklet are aimed at owners and trainers who would like to use or adapt BSL signs for their deaf dogs and also be recognised by deaf adults that use British Sign Language too.
