• Sea-Fever: Selected Poems

‘Sea-Fever’ remains one of the most popular poems of the last century, and John Masefield one of the most popular poets, a superb spinner of yarns and ballads of tall ships, exotic seas, of the deep-rooted life of rural England, and of the great narratives of Troy and Arthurian legend. This book includes his most popular poems and a few previously uncollected rarities. All share Masefield’s love of particular lives: he draws the reader into his stories with an incomparable music of language.

This is a representative selection of the poems, in chronological sequence spanning his long career. The editor also provides a full introduction to his work.

  • Sea Spin Fishing: basics, techniques and strategies to improve

The novelty in this new edition
In the second edition of this guide, dedicated to sea lure fishing, new contents, changes and updates in almost all the chapters have been introduced, compared to the previous version.
Thanks to the advice and feedback received from our readers, a lot of information and technical details have been added in order to expand knowledge on the latest innovation introduced by companies operating in the sport fishing field.
Other issues, such as layout and graphics, have been improved, thus allowing an easier and more pleasant consultation.
Many aspects have been explored, in order to provide new ideas for improvement even to those who are already familiar with this technique, always avoiding to complicate life for those who are recently approaching sea spinning.

Finally, the QR codes were inserted. They are image format codes which, when taken with a smartphone, lead to video tutorials on the planetspin youtube channel. You only need to download a free “QR code reader” app and scan the image with your smartphone.

In this manual, I collected a lot of pills and thrills. It is information arranged according to a very precise logic which is supposed to help having a clearer idea while approaching such a fascinating and, at times mysterious, fishing technique, but which attracts more and more fans.
Nowadays, compared to a few years ago, when I also moved up through the world of sea spinning, it is not difficult to find information about this. Especially thanks to the spread of this technique, in recent years, many articles have been devoted to the subject in some magazines, but we can also find many videos and articles on the internet. However, what mostly led me to the creation of this guide is the need to contain so much information into a single piece.

What are the right moments? What kind of equipment is necessary? How to choose the equipment that best suits our needs. How are the lures supposed to be used? How should the bait be moved? How to adjust the reel friction. And again: I can’t make good catches, where am I wrong? How should I choose the colors of the baits? And, finally: how can I identify a good place?
To argue these and other questions, and not to create much confusion to those who are approaching this fishing technique, we will try to focus on some information, to simplify the growth path together. We shall learn to know and select the ideal silicone bait for the predators we want to undermine, the hooks and accessories, the triggers; we will talk about casting, retrieval and all the phases of our fishing action, until the setting of the hook and the long-awaited moments of catch. The right mix between theory and practice in fishing will help improve our technique and realize the so much sought catches.

  • From the Jungle to the Deep Blue Sea: Securing the Borders in Belize

British forces have had a presence in British Honduras, Belize, or the wider Caribbean since the mid-17th century. This presence has included Royal Navy, Royal Marine, Army and, more recently, the RAF. Over the years, force levels increased and decreased depending on the political situation with Guatemala at the time, and the inherent threat of a possible Guatemalan border confrontation. At times, force levels reached roughly Brigade strength with additional RAF and RN support. Serving in Belize during this time was an exciting experience for most young men. On the one hand you had relatively poor living conditions in some of the camps nearer the Guatemalan border; the harsh and inhospitable jungle when carrying out patrols; the routine task of manning isolated observation posts on the tops of the Maya and Toledo mountains overlooking the Guatemalan border. Once away from the duties of securing the border you had the opportunity to see the gentler side of Belize. From the Jungle to the Deep Blue Sea is a down to earth book about individual memories and experiences of servicemen in Belize.

  • Somewhere Beyond the Sea: The hugely-anticipated sequel to The House in the Cerulean Sea, a heartwarming and life-affirming delight

This is the hugely-anticipated sequel to TJ Klune’s The House in the Cerulean Sea, one of the best loved fantasy novels of the past decade. It’s also a New York Times and Washington Post bestseller.

A magical house. A secret past. A summons that could change everything.

Arthur Parnassus lives a good life built on the ashes of a bad one. He’s the master of a strange orphanage on a distant and peculiar island, and he hopes to soon be the adoptive father to the six dangerous and magical children who live there.

Arthur works hard and loves with his whole heart so none of the children ever feel the neglect and pain that he once felt as an orphan on that very same island so long ago. He is not alone: joining him is the love of his life, Linus Baker, a former caseworker in the Department In Charge of Magical Youth. And there’s the island’s sprite, Zoe Chapelwhite, and her girlfriend, Mayor Helen Webb. Together, they will do anything to protect the children.

But when Arthur is summoned to make a public statement about his dark past, he finds himself at the helm of a fight for the future that his family, and all magical people, deserve. And when a new magical child hopes to join them on their island home – one who finds power in calling himself monster, a name that Arthur worked so hard to protect his children from – Arthur knows they’re at a breaking point: their family will either grow stronger than ever or fall apart.

Welcome back to Marsyas Island. This is Arthur’s story.

Somewhere Beyond the Sea is a story of resistance, lovingly told, about the daunting experience of fighting for the life you want to live and doing the work to keep it.

Praise for The House in the Cerulean Sea:

  • Arctic Convoys: Bletchley Park and the War for the Seas

An incisive account of the Arctic convoys, and the essential role Bletchley Park and Special Intelligence played in Allied success

Between 1941 and 1945, more than eight hundred shiploads of supplies were delivered to the Soviet Union protected by allied naval forces. Each journey was a battle against the elements, with turbulent seas, extreme cold, and the constant dread of torpedoes. These Arctic convoys have been mythologized as defenseless vessels at the mercy of deadly U-boats―but was this really the case?

David Kenyon explores the story of the war in the Arctic, revealing that the contest was more evenly balanced that previously thought. Battles included major ship engagements, aircraft carriers, and combat between surface ships. Amid this wide range of forces, Bletchley Park’s Naval Section played a decisive role in Arctic operations, with both sides relying heavily on Signals Intelligence to intercept and break each other’s codes. Kenyon presents a vivid picture of the Arctic theater of war, unearthing the full-scale campaign for naval supremacy in northern waters.

  • German High Seas Fleet 1914–18: The Kaiser’s challenge to the Royal Navy: 2

A superbly illustrated new account of how Germany’s High Seas Fleet was built, operated and fought, as it challenged the world’s most powerful navy in World War I.

Seven years before the outbreak of World War I, the Imperial German Navy rebranded its ‘Home Fleet’ as the Hochseeflotte (‘High Seas Fleet’). This reflected a more aggressive role for it, and one that would inevitably lead to it challenging the Royal Navy. Although never large enough to match its British rival, by 1914 the High Seas Fleet was sufficiently powerful to threaten Britain’s control of the North Sea. For the next four years these waters would become their battleground, as the fleets vied for naval supremacy.

Drawing on extensive research, this book offers the reader a concise, fully illustrated account of how the entire High Seas Fleet was designed and built, how it operated, and how it fought. The fleet was a modern, balanced force of dreadnought battleships, battlecruisers, cruisers and torpedo boats, using Zeppelins and U-boats for reconnaissance. The ultimate test between them came in May 1916, when they clashed at Jutland.

Packed with spectacular original artwork, maps, 3D diagrams and archive photos, it looks not just at the ships, crews and armament, but also explores the command and doctrine of the Kaiser’s new naval weapon, and show how the fleet was forged into a force capable of taking on the most powerful fleet in the world. It also examines how the High Seas Fleet performed in action, and how the Germans battled to keep it in fighting trim until the very end of the war, when the fleet sailed to captivity and self-destruction at Scapa Flow.

  • The Underground Sea

The Underground Sea is a succinct, urgent collection of writing from John Berger’s archive. It brings together for the first time his work on mineworkers and the miners’ strikes and has been edited as a set of actions for today. Publication of The Underground Sea marks the 40th Anniversary of the 1984-5 Strike, at a time when people are rediscovering the necessity, power and possibilities of collective action.

Including transcripts and image-essay of his rarely-seen BBC programme, Germinal; interviews and his essay ‘Miners’, it places itself in the heart of a Derbyshire mining village, with reflections on the everyday life of a typical pit community. Berger grapples with the politics of witness as he studies the miners’ labour and the wider community shaped in service to this work. Reflecting on their precarity, he goes back to Zola’s novel for hope that ‘a new world is germinating underneath the ground. And when it arrives, it will crack open the earth.’

Julia Armfield Collection 2 Books Set (Salt Slow, Our Wives Under The Sea):

    Salt Slow:
In her brilliantly inventive and haunting debut collection of stories, Julia Armfield explores the body, mapping the skin and bones of her characters through their experiences of isolation, obsession, love and revenge. Teenagers develop ungodly appetites, a city becomes insomniac overnight, and bodies are diligently picked apart to make up better ones. The mundane worlds of schools and sleepy sea-side towns are invaded and transformed, creating a landscape which is constantly shifting to hold on to its inhabitants. Blurring the mythic and the gothic with the everyday, Salt Slow considers characters in motion – turning away, turning back or simply turning into something new entirely.

    Our Wives Under The Sea:
Miri thinks she has got her wife back, when Leah finally returns after a deep sea mission that ended in catastrophe. It soon becomes clear, though, that Leah may have come back wrong. Whatever happened in that vessel, whatever it was they were supposed to be studying before they were stranded on the ocean floor, Leah has carried part of it with her, onto dry land and into their home. To have the woman she loves back should mean a return to normal life, but Miri can feel Leah slipping from her grasp. Memories of what they had before – the jokes they shared, the films they watched, all the small things that made Leah hers – only remind Miri of what she stands to lose.

  • Kayaking the Sea Roads: Exploring the Scottish Highlands

Kayaking the Sea Roads is a personal journey by sea kayak into the heart of the sea roads that make up our Scottish Highlands and islands. Blending the intensity of the journey with a careful observation of the natural world and first-hand knowledge of the challenges of living and working in this place, the author reminds us that mother nature, vast and resilient, is still out there beyond our mobile phones and urban lives. For those with the eyes to see, its natural rhythms can awaken a deep sense of wonder and give us cause to become part of the environmental recovery so sorely needed. With Ed, we travel low in the water with the restless sea ever present and we camp with him on remote rough shores. We share his feelings of wonder at the natural world, his fear at the exposure to rough seas and we encounter with him not just the myriad animals and birds that share his every day but also the people, their communities and the often gnarly rural issues impacting on human and animal alike. Alongside a deeply felt appreciation of the natural environment is a first-hand insight into the environmental and land-management issues pertinent to the Highland coast. By exploring, for instance, the impact of native versus non-native species, of community land ownership, of tourism, hunting and the varied other uses and indeed non-uses of coastal lands and seas, the readers’ eyes are opened to a Scottish Highlands that is so much more than just a pretty view.
