He began taking pictures of his neighborhood and low-rider culture and soon discovered his incredible talent for capturing raw street life. US Seventh Fleet, Vietnam 1964–73: American naval power in Southeast Asia
A superbly illustrated examination of how the US Navy’s most powerful fleet fought the Vietnam War, covering all of its elements from aircraft carriers and heavy cruisers to minesweepers and oilers. The US Navy’s Seventh Fleet was at the forefront of America’s campaign in Vietnam for a decade, from the Gulf of Tonkin Incident that began it all to the final evacuation of South Vietnam. Its mission was highly strategic, and while its primary role was to provide carrier-based air power over North Vietnam – from Rolling Thunder through Linebacker – the fleet’s operations were complex, sensitive, and varied, and required all the capabilities of the fleet.
This book is the first overall examination of how US Navy’s most powerful fleet fought and operated in Vietnam. Distilled from thousands of declassified secret documents by renowned US Navy specialist Dr Edward J. Marolda, it offers a unique new portrait of how the Seventh Fleet fought the Vietnam War, from the offensive strike power of naval aviation to the vital role of fleet logistics. As well as the carrier operations, he examines the surface combatant fleet’s gunfire support role, and its raids against the North Vietnamese coast. Dr Marolda also looks at amphibious warfare, fleet air defense, search-and-rescue, and mining and interdiction operations.
Illustrated throughout with archive photos, 3D diagrams and spectacular new artwork, and informed by never-before-translated official documents, publications, and personal accounts from North Vietnamese, Soviet, and Chinese sources, this is the real story behind the US Navy’s Vietnam War.

Uncovering the Pearl: The Hidden Story of Christianity in Asia: 2 (The Global Story of Christianity)
Asia is by far the largest continent in the world. The global expansion of the church, which emanated from the Middle East (as explored in the first book in the series) moved along various routes to take root in Asia proper. Christianity in Asia is extraordinarily diverse, with very ancient forms of the faith dating to the time of the apostles. The western church will be enlightened by the dynamic, multi-pronged Asian story of Christianity. Asian Christianity is also distinct due to the numerous non-traditional, house, or cell movements found throughout the region. The diversity of Christianity in Asia makes Christians in this region critical for the future of global Christianity.Read more

Desi – Fashion Colouring Book Inspired by South Asia
This is a book full of illustrations inspired by South Asian Fashion for you to colour and enjoy!
I have lived my whole life in the bustling streets of London, but my heart has always been heavily influenced by my Bangladeshi ancestry. My heritage touches every aspect of my life, most notably in my passion for fashion.
‘Desi’ is a term loosely used to describe the people, cultures, and products of the Indian subcontinent and their diaspora. ‘Desi’ predominantly traces its origin to the people of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Desi style is difficult to define into words but I can say it typically embraces vibrant colours, motifs inspired by nature, paisley prints, and intricate design work.
I love wearing my traditional Desi clothes. Every Eid you will find me at Southall or Green Street Upton Park shopping for my next outfit. I have so many great pieces that my wardrobe overflows with Kurtas, Lehengas, Kameez, Anarkalis, and Sarees. Let’s not forget the magnificent Desi jewellery, including Tikkas, Jhumkas and Chooriyans.
My love for South Asian Fashion reverberates in all my artworks. As an illustrator, I pour my heart into each creation. I find joy in detailing every petal, bead and sequin. With this book, I hope to inspire and introduce the audience to the beauty and glamour of South Asian Fashion.
I hope this book invokes a deep sense of pride in all the Desi Population. Your fashion and style is a unique part of your identity. Your culture and traditions are something to celebrate and enjoy!
Please do tag me in your posts, I would love to see your colouring creations!

The Dust on the Throne: The Search for Buddhism in Modern India (South Asia in Motion)
Received wisdom has it that Buddhism disappeared from India, the land of its birth, between the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, long forgotten until British colonial scholars re-discovered it in the early 1800s. Its full-fledged revival, so the story goes, only occurred in 1956, when the Indian civil rights pioneer Dr. B.R. Ambedkar converted to Buddhism along with half a million of his Dalit (formerly “untouchable”) followers. This, however, is only part of the story. Dust on the Throne reframes discussions about the place of Buddhism in the subcontinent from the early nineteenth century onwards, uncovering the integral, yet unacknowledged, role that Indians played in the making of modern global Buddhism in the century prior to Ambedkar’s conversion, and the numerous ways that Buddhism gave powerful shape to modern Indian history.
Through an extensive examination of disparate materials held at archives and temples across South Asia, Douglas Ober explores Buddhist religious dynamics in an age of expanding colonial empires, intra-Asian connectivity, and the histories of Buddhism produced by nineteenth and twentieth century Indian thinkers. While Buddhism in contemporary India is often disparaged as being little more than tattered manuscripts and crumbling ruins, this book opens new avenues for understanding its substantial socio-political impact and intellectual legacy.

The Archaeology of South Asia: From the Indus to Asoka, c.6500 BCE–200 CE (Cambridge World Archaeology)
This book offers a critical synthesis of the archaeology of South Asia from the Neolithic period (c.6500 BCE), when domestication began, to the spread of Buddhism accompanying the Mauryan Emperor Asoka’s reign (third century BCE). The authors examine the growth and character of the Indus civilisation, with its town planning, sophisticated drainage systems, vast cities and international trade. They also consider the strong cultural links between the Indus civilisation and the second, later period of South Asian urbanism which began in the first millennium BCE and developed through the early first millennium CE. In addition to examining the evidence for emerging urban complexity, this book gives equal weight to interactions between rural and urban communities across South Asia and considers the critical roles played by rural areas in social and economic development. The authors explore how narratives of continuity and transformation have been formulated in analyses of South Asia’s Prehistoric and Early Historic archaeological record.Read more

Slavery in East Asia (Elements in the Global Middle Ages)
In premodern China, Korea, Japan, and Vietnam, just as in the far less culturally cohesive countries composing the West of the Middle Ages, enslavement was an assumed condition of servitude warranting little examination, as the power and profits it afforded to the slaver made it a convention pursued unreflectively. Slavery in medieval East Asia shared with the West the commonplace assumption that nearly all humans were potential chattel, that once they had become owned beings, they could then be either sold or inherited. Yet, despite being representative of perhaps the most universalizable human practice of that age, slavery in medieval East Asia was also endowed with its own distinctive traits and traditions. Our awareness of these features of distinction contributes immeasurably to a more nuanced understanding of slavery as the ubiquitous and openly practiced institution that it once was and the now illicit and surreptitious one that it intractably remains.Read more

The Light of Asia
The Light of Asia was published in 1879. The book is renowned as a classic and has been published in various editions and different languages. In this poetic masterpiece, Sir Edwin Arnold tells the life and lessons of Buddha. The man who was to become known as Buddha to the world was born Prince Gautama of India. However, he rejected the wealthy and lavish lifestyle and abandoned all the powers he had gotten when he began his journey to find the importance of life. This poem uncovers Buddha’s life according to the Buddhist point of view, so you don’t need to be a Buddhist to see the value in this wonderful work. As soon as you read about Buddha, you will start discovering your own life. Not just the philosophical part, but because of its poetic form, the story of the dramatic incidents in Buddha’s life is delightful to read.Read more

Southeast Asia: An introductory history
The first edition of Southeast Asia: An introductory history was published in 1979 and immediately filled a need for travellers and students interested in a tantalisingly different part of the world. Subsequent editions (translated into Japanese, Khmer, Korean, Chinese and Thai) have continued to document with great perception the enormous changes and dramatic growth experienced in the region.
Dr Milton Osborne has been a resident, student and fascinated observer of Southeast Asia for many years. This familiarity has resulted in a highly readable and lively chronicle. While giving due regard to the early history of the region, Osborne concentrates on the changes that have taken place since the 18th century: the impact of colonial rule, the economic transformations of the 19th and 20th centuries, the emergence and triumph of the independence movements, the impact of social change and the pivotal roles played by religion, ethnic minorities and immigrant groups. He also provides an introduction to the art of the region and a comprehensive guide to literature about Southeast Asia.
Clearly written and extensively illustrated Southeast Asia: An introductory history remains a classic in the field.
‘Still one of the best short introductory histories of the region…’ Eric Tagliacozzo, Cornell University

A Brief History of Vietnam: Colonialism, War and Renewal: The Story of a Nation Transformed (Brief History Of Asia Series)
This accessible guide is your one-stop shop for discovering Vietnamese history.A Brief History of Vietnam explores the fascinating, turbulent history of a land that has risen from the ashes of war to become a leading economic power. This book expertly examines the history of a people and a nation with ancient roots but which only took its current shape in the 19th century under French colonial rule and its current name in 1945.
Before that landmark year, Vietnam was known by many names, under many rulers. Located in the geographical center of Southeast Asia, the country we call “Vietnam” was ruled by China, a series of Vietnamese emperors, and the French. A devastating, decades-long conflict for independence ensued, ending with the conclusion of the Vietnam War in 1975.
Key topics include:
- China’s ancient conquest of Vietnam and the millennia-long struggle of the Vietnamese for independence from its powerful neighbor to the north.
- The reign of the Nguyen dynasty, the last dynasty to rule Vietnam, with its capital at the ancient city of Hue, today a UNESCO world heritage site.
- France’s eventual colonization of Vietnam, which lasted for over 60 years, culminating in the dramatic Battle of Dien Bien Phu.
- The story of Ho Chi Minh, educated in France, who attended the Treaty of Versailles to advocate for independence and became Vietnam’s first President after the Vietnam War.
- The violent political split between North and South, which resulted in a devastating war with the United States and eventual victory by the Communists.
- The country’s miraculous emergence from three decades of war and its path to becoming one of the world’s fastest-growing economies today.
- Perfect for history buffs of all kinds, the book includes 32 pages of vivid color photos that depict the country’s rich history. Journalist Bill Hayton’s accessible prose makes A Brief History of Vietnam an essential study of a beautiful, complex land in the heart of Southeast Asia and its worldwide influence.

Trading Places: The East India Company and Asia 1600-1834
The British merchants who began trading with Asia in the late 1500s found a sophisticated and thriving trading community. Goods were manufactured and traded on a scale never seen in Europe, and Britain discovered a wealth of products including silks, porcelain, tea, spices and furniture. This illustrated book examines the history of trading with Asia, drawing on the extensive collections of the British Library, the prime holder of the documentary legacy of the East India Company. The East India Company was founded in 1600 to consolidate and exploit the Asian markets, and over its history grew into “the grandest society of merchants in the universe”. As a commercial enterprise it came to control half the world’s trade and as political entity it administered an embryonic empire. This book shows the human cost of creating this early “global market” and how the Company’s activities displayed some of the worst aspects of colonialism. On the positive side, the book presents the importance of the 400-year cultural exchange between Asia and Europe.Read more

From the Wall to the Water: A Journey Through Asia
In 2015, footloose lawyer and screenplay writer William Han set out to travel the ancient Silk Road from China to Europe, following the footsteps of a Chinese explorer who tried to make contact with the Roman Empire in the first century AD. Born in Taiwan, raised in New Zealand, and freshly liberated from a New York law firm, he relied largely on a big smile and a firm handshake on a voyage through both space and times from northwest China through Central Asia and Afghanistan to Iran. From the Wall to the Water is a personal odyssey as well as a snapshot of an unstable and little known part of the world from a unique perspective, linking the ancient past to the uncertain present, and generating observations and meditations on the tides of history, and our place within it.Read more

Transmedia Storytelling in East Asia: The Age of Digital Media (Routledge Research in Digital Media and Culture in Asia)
This book offers a thorough investigation of the recent surge of webtoons and manga/animation as the sources of transmedia storytelling for popular culture, not only in East Asia but in the wider global context.
An international team of experts employ a unique theoretical framework of media convergence supported by transmedia storytelling, alongside historical and textual analyses, to examine the ways in which webtoons and anime become some of the major sources for transmedia storytelling. The book historicizes the evolution of regional popular culture according to the surrounding digital media ecology, driving the change and continuity of the manhwa industry over the past 15 years, and discusses whether cultural products utilizing transmedia storytelling take a major role as the primary local cultural product in the cultural market.
Offering new perspectives on current debates surrounding transmedia storytelling in the cultural industries, this book will be of great interest to scholars and students of media studies, East Asian studies and cultural studies.

Asia as Method: Toward Deimperialization
Centering his analysis in the dynamic forces of modern East Asian history, Kuan-Hsing Chen recasts cultural studies as a politically urgent global endeavor. He argues that the intellectual and subjective work of decolonization begun across East Asia after the Second World War was stalled by the cold war. At the same time, the work of deimperialization became impossible to imagine in imperial centers such as Japan and the United States. Chen contends that it is now necessary to resume those tasks, and that decolonization, deimperialization, and an intellectual undoing of the cold war must proceed simultaneously. Combining postcolonial studies, globalization studies, and the emerging field of “Asian studies in Asia,” he insists that those on both sides of the imperial divide must assess the conduct, motives, and consequences of imperial histories.Chen is one of the most important intellectuals working in East Asia today; his writing has been influential in Taiwan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, and mainland China for the past fifteen years. As a founding member of the Inter-Asia Cultural Studies Society and its journal, he has helped to initiate change in the dynamics and intellectual orientation of the region, building a network that has facilitated inter-Asian connections. Asia as Method encapsulates Chen’s vision and activities within the increasingly “inter-referencing” East Asian intellectual community and charts necessary new directions for cultural studies.
