  • A Christmas Carol (Wordsworth Classics)

    08
A Christmas Carol is the most famous, heart-warming and chilling festive story of them all. In these pages we meet Ebenezer Scrooge, whose name is synonymous with greed and parsimony: ‘Every idiot who goes about with “Merry Christmas” on his lips, should be boiled with his own pudding, and buried with a stake of holly through his heart’. This attitude is soon challenged when the ghost of his old partner, Jacob Marley, returns from the grave to haunt him on Christmas Eve. Scrooge is then visited in turn by three spirits of Christmas Past, Present and Future, each one revealing the error of his ways and gradually melting the frozen heart of this old miser, leading him towards his redemption. On the journey we take with Scrooge we encounter a rich array of Dickensian characters including the poor Cratchit family with the ailing Tiny Tim and the generous and jolly Fezziwig.
When Charles Dickens wrote A Christmas Carol in 1843 he fashioned an enduring gift to the world, capturing the essence of the love, kindness and generosity of the Christmas season. It is a timeless classic and the story’s uplifting magic remains as potent today as when it was first published.

  • Middle Waters: A Trawlerman’s Tale

In this book, ‘Middle Waters’, Bosun Ron Telford tells true tales of when the only place Grimsby fishermen were allowed to catch any fish was the Shetland and Orkney Islands. A few boats did have quotas to fish around the Faroe Islands but this did not last long.
The boats that were left after the Deep-Water Industry collapsed, were called ‘Cat’ boats. They had smaller crews and shorter trips to sea. The work was still as dangerous, with the crews working long hours, having little sleep and then home again. After seventy-two hours in dock, sailing again, hoping to earn a good living from the sea.
These are my stories and I tell of the many sacrifices we endured by not seeing our children grow up or spending time with our loved ones. Now I am retired from the sea I enjoy spending time with our grandchildren and great grandchildren and I realise how much I missed of my own children. I am extremely proud of them all. I currently work at the Grimsby Fishing Heritage Centre, as a Tour Guide on the Ross Tiger. Working here has helped me recall my working days as a trawlerman, telling the general public, first hand, my experiences of my time at sea. I get so much pleasure from seeing their faces as I recall my days as a trawlerman and the hardships endured to put fish on the table and earn a living.

  • A Spy Alone: A compelling modern espionage novel from a former MI6 operative (The Oxford Spy Ring Book 1)

    03

‘This is first class’ The Times

‘A stunning debut’ Maxim Jakubowski, Crime Time

‘A marvellously confident debut, sharply observed and exceptionally well written’ Charles Cumming, author of Box 88

Everyone knows about the Cambridge Spies from the Fifties, identified and broken up after passing national secrets to the Soviets for years. But no spy ring was ever unearthed at Oxford. Because one never existed? Or because it was never found…?

2022: Former spy Simon Sharman is eking out a living in the private sector. When a commission to delve into the financial dealings of a mysterious Russian oligarch comes across his desk, he jumps at the chance.

But as Simon investigates, worrying patterns begin to emerge. His subject made regular trips to Oxford, but for no apparent reason. There are payments from offshore accounts that suddenly just… stop.

Has he found what none of his former colleagues believed possible, a Russian spy ring now nestled at the heart of the British Establishment? Or is he just another paranoid ex-spook left out in the cold, obsessed with redemption?

From Oxford’s hallowed quadrangles to brush contacts on Hampstead Heath, agent-running in Vienna and mysterious meetings in Prague, A Spy Alone is a gripping international thriller and a searing portrait of modern Britain in the age of cynical populism. Perfect for readers of Charles Cumming, Mick Herron and John le Carré.

    Praise for A Spy Alone

‘Beaumont … catches the zeitgeist of (le Carré) …. He conveys all the world of espionage with relish, in its murky motives and surveillance techniques and the book races along and makes for a stunning debut’ Maxim Jakubowski, Crime Time

‘A clever, thrilling spy story that brings the feel of Eric Ambler’s shadowy political intrigues right into today’s world’ Jeremy Duns, author of Free Agent

‘A Spy Alone is as intricate as it is absorbing, as fantastically entertaining as it is disturbingly plausible, and is delivered with the confidence of a writer who knows how to handle the highest stakes’ Tim Glister, author of Red Corona

‘Beaumont’s debut novel has such a ring of authenticity about it that it reads like an inside job… The story is gripping and the characters are all well drawn. Highly recommended’ Alex Gerlis, author of the Wolf Pack series

‘Propulsive, authentic and eye-opening, A Spy Alone is clearly written by someone with first-hand experience of the secret world’ James Wolff, author of How to Betray Your Country

‘Tense, compelling and remarkably timely… Shades of some of the greats of spy fiction – it might even be better than Charles Cumming’ Dominick Donald, author of Breathe

‘Beaumont takes the intrigue, atmosphere and subterfuge of the Cambridge Spies and brings it bang up to date with a what-if tale of an Oxford spy ring at the service of modern-day populist politicians and malevolent regimes. A chilling story that feels all too plausible today, written with extraordinary insight’ Chris Lloyd, author of The Unwanted Dead

‘Authentic and compelling – Beaumont captures the intertwined worlds of Oxford and espionage with the keen eye of the insider’ Tom Fletcher, author of The Ambassador

‘This book is timely. It’s a well-written and atmospheric tale of espionage. But it hits hard at some of the real issues facing Britain and the world today’ Dan Kaszeta, author of Toxic: A History of Nerve Agents

  • Taming The Fire (The Dragon Tributes Book 2)

    03
The dragons on Draig Island are not your run-of-the-mill kind. They’re something else entirely…

I’m incredibly lucky. I was born with a silver spoon in my mouth. My father is one of the wealthiest men in the world, and I stand to inherit everything one day. At least, that’s what I tell people, but it isn’t exactly true. The reality is that my life is not my own. Everything has been mapped out and dictated to me, right down to the man I will marry one day. Unfortunately, that day is fast approaching and the man he has chosen – let’s just say, he’s not my type.

I was distraught when I found out that I had been selected as a Tribute. That I was expected to go to Draig Island. Everyone knows that a large percentage of Tributes never make it back. I thought it was the worst thing that could happen to me.

Then, I taste freedom for the first time in my life. I start to think that Draig Island could be my salvation. All I have to do is mind-bond with a dragon, and I will be able to stay. It’s a pity that mind-bonding with dragons is incredibly dangerous and a very difficult feat to achieve. I am determined. I will get it right. I want to stay. Going back to my old life is no longer an option.

    This story contains mature themes/language.
Also, be prepared for a ton of growls, dirty talk, and a hard-won HEA. Hulking, skulking, foul-mouthed, brooding dragons ahead. You were warned!

  • Romance Rules for Werewolves (Charming Cove Book 3)

    08

Autumn is a time of snuggly sweaters, crisp breezes, and…. sexy, broody werewolves?

When I inherit a magical house in the beautiful seaside village of Charming Cove, it’s just what I need to turn my dismal life around. Fresh off a bad breakup and with magic that I’ve ignored for a decade, I’m ready to rekindle my inner witch.

The catch? The house is inhabitable until I renovate it, and the only place to live is with a brooding, rugged boat-builder who definitely doesn’t want me in his space. Though there’s no denying the electric spark between us, neither of us is willing to act on it.

To make things more complicated, I have to renovate the house in thirty days or I’ll lose it. But the house hates anyone who enters it and attacks with loose floorboards and horrific odors. I can’t get a single contractor in Charming Cove to help me out.

That leaves only one option—convince my new roommate to help me until I can untangle the mystery of why my new home is so moody. It’ll mean spending every day with the sexy, infuriating werewolf, but I’ll do whatever it takes to make my dreams a reality.

Romance Rules for Werewolves is a fun, frothy romantic comedy full of laughter, love, and magical hijinks. It’s the third in a series of stand alone romances set in the seaside village of Charming Cove and the books do not need to be read in order.

Aumary discovers that many in the town wished Pitchcott harm, but how did the killer reach him? Aumary and his friends are baffled! Can Aumary reveal the guilty party before the murderer strikes again?

Worldes Blis, a strange thirteenth-century song, provides the backdrop to the fourteenth novel in Susanna M. Newstead’s Savernake Medieval Murder Mystery Novel series.

    Author Interview

    1) How difficult is it to research settings for a Medieval Murder Mystery?

I’ve been doing it so long, I don’t really know. When I first started there was no web. Much of the history was a bit of a mystery even to experts. The manuscripts one might have needed were difficult to access but with the help of many people and institutions like libraries, I managed the investigation I needed. I’m still researching – it never ends. One has to play detective oneself never mind write about secrets and intrigue.

    2) This is the fourteenth novel in your series. How do you keep the stories so fresh and exciting?

Ah, this is just practice I think. Clues have to be eked out and red herrings buried deep in the mystery. Pacing is very important and the investigation has to go on at the right speed, with little moments of humour to lift the intrigue.

    3) Did you discover anything fascinating when researching this book?

Yes. All about Medieval scaffolding! Who knew exactly how the builders put together a castle? And the fact that some of that Medieval work is sometimes still there! I’ve seen it with my own eyes.

  • White Witchmas (Wicked Witches of the Midwest Book 23)

    06
Chestnuts are roasting. Jingle bells are rocking. The halls are about to be decked.
In other words, Christmas is about to hit Hemlock Cove. Hard.
There’s just one little problem…or maybe two. Okay, there are three big problems plaguing Bay Winchester before she can enjoy the holidays.
The first is that the warden who lost his job thanks to a prison break weeks before is determined to stalk Bay until she magically fixes his life. He keeps showing up in the oddest of places and making the sort of demands she can’t fulfill.
The second involves Aunt Tillie, who has decided to gift her nemesis Margaret Little a special spell rather than a lump of coal this holiday season. It involves her Christmas decorations taking on a life—and voice—of their own. The spell, however, isn’t nearly as contained as it was supposed to be.
When a body shows up at the local private school, that means it’s one problem too many for Bay. And she doesn’t know which problem to solve first.
The headmistress of the school was involved in a convoluted affair with father of one of her students. The list of suspects who wanted her dead was long and sundry, however.
All Bay wants is to surprise her husband with a dog for Christmas and to eat her weight in cookies. She has to save the day first, though.
Murder, mayhem, and mistletoe are on the menu.
Death might not be far behind.
Buckle up, because the Santa decorations are coming to town.

  • Frenemies: The Epic Disruption of the Advertising Industry (and Why This Matters)

    04

An intimate and profound reckoning with the changes buffeting the $2 trillion global advertising and marketing business from the perspective of its most powerful players, by the bestselling author of Googled

Advertising and marketing touches on every corner of our lives, and is the invisible fuel powering almost all media. Complain about it though we might, without it the world would be a darker place. And of all the industries wracked by change in the digital age, few have been turned on its head as dramatically as this one has. We are a long way from the days of Don Draper; as Mad Men is turned into Math Men (and women–though too few), as an instinctual art is transformed into a science, the old lions and their kingdoms are feeling real fear, however bravely they might roar.

Frenemies is Ken Auletta’s reckoning with an industry under existential assault. He enters the rooms of the ad world’s most important players, some of them business partners, some adversaries, many “frenemies,” a term whose ubiquitous use in this industry reveals the level of anxiety, as former allies become competitors, and accusations of kickbacks and corruption swirl. We meet the old guard, including Sir Martin Sorrell, the legendary head of WPP, the world’s largest ad agency holding company; while others play nice with Facebook and Google, he rants, some say Lear-like, out on the heath. There is Irwin Gotlieb, maestro of the media agency GroupM, the most powerful media agency, but like all media agencies it is staring into the headlights as ad buying is more and more done by machine in the age of Oracle and IBM. We see the world from the vantage of its new powers, like Carolyn Everson, Facebook’s head of Sales, and other brash and scrappy creatives who are driving change, as millennials and others who disdain ads as an interruption employ technology to zap them. We also peer into the future, looking at what is replacing traditional advertising. And throughout we follow the industry’s peerless matchmaker, Michael Kassan, whose company, MediaLink, connects all these players together, serving as the industry’s foremost power broker, a position which feasts on times of fear and change.

Frenemies is essential reading, not simply because of what it says about this world, but because of the potential consequences: the survival of media as we know it depends on the money generated by advertising and marketing–revenue that is in peril in the face of technological changes and the fraying trust between the industry’s key players.
