    AS FEATURED IN SEASPIRACY

An Observer Book of the Year 2017

    A Sunday Times must read

    A New York Times Bestseller

Endorsed by His Holiness the Dalai Lama – ‘Balcombe vividly shows that fish have feelings and deserve consideration and protection like other sentient beings’

What’s the truth behind the old adage that goldfish have a three-second memory? Do fishes think? Can they recognize the humans who peer back at them from above the surface of the water? Myth-busting biologist and animal behaviour expert Jonathan Balcombe takes us under the sea, through streams and estuaries to the other side of the aquarium glass to answer these questions and more. He upends our assumptions, revealing that fish are far from the unfeeling, dead-eyed feeding machines so many of us assume them to be. They are, in fact, sentient, aware, social and even Machiavellian – in other words, rather like us.

What a Fish Knows draws on the latest science to present a fresh look at these remarkable creatures in all their breathtaking diversity and beauty. Teeming with insights and exciting discoveries, it offers a thoughtful appraisal of our relationships with fish and inspires us to take a more enlightened view of the planet’s increasingly imperilled marine life. What a Fish Knows will forever change how we see our aquatic cousins – the pet goldfish included.

    THE CHARITY SHOP DETECTIVES
Level-headed Fiona has found a quiet sanctuary volunteering at the local charity shop, Dogs Need Nice Homes. A charity shop that raises money for dogs in need of nice homes. And she’s found firm friendship with the strong-willed Partial Sue (she’s ever so partial to a cup of tea) and the kindly and surprisingly tech-savvy Daisy. Together, these ladies, with Simon Le Bon, Fiona’s scruffy-haired terrier cross, investigate murders as the Charity Shop Detective Agency.

    THE SETTING
The lovely coastal town of Southbourne is, on paper, little more than a small suburb hemmed in by Bournemouth to the west and Christchurch to the north. But it’s home to the prettiest avenues lined with gorgeous Georgian homes which lead to a grass-topped cliff standing guard over a sweeping bay of blond sand, soft as Demerara sugar. Some say it’s also home to the best charity shops in the country. The ladies of the Charity Shop Detective Agency maintain that Dogs Need Nice Homes — though musty and more than a little cramped — is certainly number one. Well, they definitely solve the most crimes at least!

    Why Shakespeare?

It’s been 400 years since his death and yet we continue to find inspiration, revelation, solace, and entertainment in his poems and plays. In this original collection, Susannah Carson invites 38 actors, directors, scholars, and writers to share their own personal connections with Shakespeare and explore how he came to shape our world so completely.

Along the way, we reminisce on a childhood spent constructing makeshift matchstick theatres with Isabel Allende, grapple with Coriolanus for a modern audience alongside Ralph Fiennes, hear from James Earl Jones on reclaiming Othello as a tragic hero, share in Julie Taymor’s transformation of Prospero into Prospera, join Sir Ben Kingsley on his mission to keep Shakespeare’s ideas alive for all generations through performance, and muse with Brian Cox on social conflict in Shakespeare’s time and in ours. • Your Dog Ate My Shoe: Etudes For Young Actors Op. 1

This is the first book in the series of short one to three-minute exercises for young actors. This first volume contains one hundred eleven scenes of different levels of difficulty for actors as young as six years old to late teens and young adults.

Each generation deserves its own voice. Therefore, in contrast to other acting books written for teens by adults, this book was written by their peer.

Each scene is provided with a b-code that describes for what age range and gender identification it is suitable to be performed. Scenes were constructed in a way that it would be easy for the young actor to perform them with their acting coach, parent or colleague.

All scenes are formatted according to the standard script formatting guidelines.

The paper version of this book is intentionally printed on non-glossy paper and is meant to be scribbled on. Please make it your own, take it with you to your acting lesson, and put your thoughts and findings in pencil or ink.

Please note that this book is published not-for-profit the collection is provided in electronic form to patrons so they can support the website https://www.bcacting.com.

At the time of publishing (October 2023) All of scenes in this book can be downloaded for free from the official website https://www.bcacting.com where they were originally published between April and September 2023.

“Your Dog Ate My Shoe” is a citation from one of the very first scenes written for this book. The subtitle of the book “Etudes For Young Actors Op. 1” is inspired by music books, étude in French means an exercise, and opus is a collection of works. As actors use their bodies as an instrument to perform truthful emotions, there’s no better subtitle that I could imagine.

It is 1861. On the docks of England, the promise of Christmas seems distant, drowned out by the clinking coins of wartime trade. The distant American Civil War casts its long shadow of prosperity and poverty across the ocean.

But while Liverpool’s merchants thrive the working class suffers. Amidst this bustling backdrop of shady deals and profiteering, Hester Grace, an orphaned young woman, ekes out a living by scavenging the Albert Dock’s treasures.

All the while her heart belongs to Robert Burrows, a dockland baker promised to another’s love.

Hester’s affection remains a well-guarded secret until the fateful night she stumbles upon a treacherous truth that could shatter the man she adores. In a city where power brokers stop at nothing to protect their interests, Hester faces an agonising choice.

Should she bury her feelings and watch Robert walk into danger’s embrace? Or will this humble orphan girl dare to challenge the consuming darkness that threatens them all?

Enter a Christmas saga filled with passion, secrets, and tough moral choices, where love and loyalty collide in the grimy docklands of Victorian England.

A heart-wrenching Christmas romance that will keep you eagerly turning the pages all the way to a tear-jerking happy ever after.

  • The Christmas Thief (Snow on the Cobbles – Victorian Christmas Stories)

Jane knows how very lucky she is not to be hungry and desperate this Christmas. She tries to use her luck to help others, but everything is changing, and whether she likes it or not, she is at the very centre of those changes.

Jane has been working for the Berringford Foundation for a long time now. She does good work, and she is passionate about helping people who don’t have enough to eat at Christmas, or on any other day of the year.

But some items have gone missing from wealthy people’s houses, and those same wealthy people appear on a list of potential patrons the charity has approached. Trouble is knocking, and soon everybody’s going to be swept into its path.

Alvin has been tasked with the job of investigating the robberies. It’s not his dream assignment, but he has no choice. He does it begrudgingly up until the moment he meets Jane, at which point he finds an enthusiasm he’d long forgotten.

With Winter in full swing, and Christmas only weeks away, Jane just wants to see to it that everybody is looked after, while Alvin is struggling with the morality of what he must do.

Events, along with their emotions, are spiralling out of their control.

The Christmas Thief is the story of two people brought together by fate, each with their own troubles, worries and secrets. Is this the greatest love either of them will ever know, or should they never have crossed paths at all?

By the time Christmas arrives, neither of them will have any doubt.
