Quantum Computing for Everyone (Mit Press)
An accessible introduction to an exciting new area in computation, explaining such topics as qubits, entanglement, and quantum teleportation for the general reader.Quantum computing is a beautiful fusion of quantum physics and computer science, incorporating some of the most stunning ideas from twentieth-century physics into an entirely new way of thinking about computation. In this book, Chris Bernhardt offers an introduction to quantum computing that is accessible to anyone who is comfortable with high school mathematics. He explains qubits, entanglement, quantum teleportation, quantum algorithms, and other quantum-related topics as clearly as possible for the general reader. Bernhardt, a mathematician himself, simplifies the mathematics as much as he can and provides elementary examples that illustrate both how the math works and what it means.
Bernhardt introduces the basic unit of quantum computing, the qubit, and explains how the qubit can be measured; discusses entanglement–which, he says, is easier to describe mathematically than verbally–and what it means when two qubits are entangled (citing Einstein’s characterization of what happens when the measurement of one entangled qubit affects the second as “spooky action at a distance”); and introduces quantum cryptography. He recaps standard topics in classical computing–bits, gates, and logic–and describes Edward Fredkin’s ingenious billiard ball computer. He defines quantum gates, considers the speed of quantum algorithms, and describes the building of quantum computers. By the end of the book, readers understand that quantum computing and classical computing are not two distinct disciplines, and that quantum computing is the fundamental form of computing. The basic unit of computation is the qubit, not the bit.

Wok & Spice: The Art of Indo-Chinese Cooking
The history of Indo-Chinese food dates back to the late 19th century when Chinese immigrants settled in various parts of India, particularly in Kolkata (formerly Calcutta). These immigrants, primarily from the Hakka region of China, brought their culinary traditions and flavours with them.Initially, Chinese food in India was adapted to suit the local Indian palate, resulting in the creation of a fusion cuisine that combined Chinese cooking techniques and ingredients with Indian flavours and spices. This fusion cuisine eventually became known as Indo-Chinese or Indian Chinese food.
The early Chinese immigrants opened small eateries and restaurants in Kolkata, where they served dishes that blended Chinese and Indian flavours. Some of the earliest and most iconic Indo-Chinese dishes, such as Gobi Manchurian and Chicken Manchurian, were created during this time. These dishes were a result of experimenting with Chinese cooking techniques and sauces, combined with Indian spices and ingredients.
Over time, the popularity of Indo-Chinese cuisine grew, and it spread to other parts of India as well. Chinese restaurants serving Indo-Chinese food became widespread, catering to the Indian taste preferences for bold, spicy, and tangy flavours.
Today, Indo-Chinese cuisine has become an integral part of Indian culinary culture. It features a wide range of dishes that combine elements from both cuisines, such as stir-fried noodles, fried rice, Manchurian dishes, and various spicy sauces. Indo-Chinese food has its own distinct flavour profile, characterized by a balance of umami, spiciness, tanginess, and aromatic spices. The popularity of Indo-Chinese food extends beyond India, with Indian diaspora communities around the world also enjoying these flavourful dishes. It has become a beloved and influential cuisine, showcasing the harmonious blend of Chinese and Indian culinary traditions.
Overall, the history of Indo-Chinese food reflects the cultural exchange and adaptation that occurs when culinary traditions from different regions come together, resulting in a unique and delicious fusion cuisine.
It is important to note that Indo-Chinese cuisine is not widely recognized in China as an authentic Chinese cuisine. While specific inventors may not be known, the credit for the creation and popularization of Indo-Chinese cuisine goes to the Chinese community in India and the subsequent generations of Indian chefs and cooks who have continued to innovate and refine these dishes.

Wolves Always Bite (Willow Lake Supernaturals Book 2)
What’s a simple human to do when he discovers supernatural beings are real?
Ask a lot of questions, take a lot of notes, and try to seduce a werewolf, of course.Jeremy has always wanted to befriend mythical creatures, play with forbidden magic, and meet his fated mate. Okay, okay. He knows the difference between fiction and real life; he is an author after all… Or he would be if he ever got to “The End” on one of his stories. So he realizes his desire to live inside a fantasy romance novel is a touch unrealistic, but where is the joy in living a life that is boring and predictable and overwhelmingly blah?
At least that’s what he thinks until a hot AF werewolf saves him from his freaky boss and turns his whole life upside down. And his boss? She isn’t the weird old lady he thought she was, but how could he have guessed she is a grumpy goblin with a reputation for selling black-market magical artifacts? Now Jeremy is determined to know everything about the supernatural world, and Adrian, his swoon-worthy werewolf hero, is willing to answer all his questions, even when they make the big guy blush.
But when his former goblin boss kidnaps his cat to convince Jeremy to return the items she thinks he stole, things get serious fast. Now in between plotting his next MM romance and seducing the beautiful werewolf (and not just for research purposes), he needs to stage a cat rescue. Life is definitely not boring now.

Women and the Fatimids in the World of Islam
This first full-length study of women and the Fatimids is a groundbreaking work investigating an unexplored area in the field of Islamic and medieval studies. The authors have unearthed a wealth of references to women, thus re-inscribing their role in the history of one of the most fascinating Islamic dynasties, the only one to be named after a woman. At last some light is thrown on the erstwhile silent and shadowy figures of women under the Fatimids which gives them a presence in the history of women in medieval and pre-modern dynasties. Basing their research on a variety of sources from historical works to chronicles, official correspondence, documentary sources and archaeological findings, the authors have provided a richly informative analysis of the status and influence of women in this period. Their contribution is explored first within the context of Isma’ili and Fatimid genealogical history, and then within the courts in their roles as mothers, courtesans, wives and daughters, and as workers and servants. Throughout the book comparison is drawn with the status and roles of women in earlier, contemporary and subsequent Islamic as well as non-Islamic courts.Read more

Women Artists Together: Art in the Age of Women’s Liberation
A fresh perspective on collaboration, collectivity, and conflict in the women’s art movement of the 1970s
Women Artists Together is a thought-provoking study of how the women’s liberation movement galvanized a generation of women artists. It offers a fresh perspective on the history of the women’s art movement and considers how it was shaped by collaboration and togetherness. Retracing 1970s liberation politics, Amy Tobin emphasizes how artworks emerged from―and contested―feminist paradigms and contexts.
Taking class, gender, race, and sexuality as central concerns, the book includes examples of inspirational feminist activism as well as fallings out, disagreements, and antagonism. Across four chapters, Tobin looks at the work of UK- and US-based artists including Judy Chicago, Mary Beth Edelson, Rose English, Harmony Hammond, Candace Hill-Montgomery, Claudette Johnson, Suzanne Lacy, Howardena Pindell, Ingrid Pollard, Carolee Schneemann, Cecilia Vicuña, and Kate Walker. Groups include the Feminist Art Programme at Cal Arts, Women’s Workshop of the Artists’ Union, Where We At, Black Women Artists Inc., and the South London Art Group, publications such as Heresies and Chrysalis, along with writers and curators including Lucy R. Lippard and Arlene Raven.Read more

Women in British Cinema: Mad, Bad and Dangerous to Know (Rethinking British Cinema S.)
This book takes a broad perspective and analyses the ways in which the British film industry has dealt with women and their creativity from 1930 to the present. The first part of the book deals comprehensively with different historical periods in British film culture, showing how the ‘agency’ of production company, director, distribution company or scriptwriter can bring about new patterns of female stereotyping. The second part looks at the input of women workers into the film process. It assesses the work of women in a variety of roles: directors such as Wendy Toye and Sally Potter, producers such as Betty Box, scriptwriters such as Clemence Dane and Muriel Box, costume designers such as Shirley Russell and Jocelyn Rickards, and editors and art directors. This is a polemical book which is written in a lively and often confrontational manner. It uses fresh archival material and takes energetic issue with those explanatory models of film analysis which impose easy answers onto complex material.Read more

Women in Intelligence: The Hidden History of Two World Wars
A groundbreaking history of women in British intelligence, revealing their pivotal role across the first half of the twentieth century
From the twentieth century onward, women took on an extraordinary range of roles in intelligence, defying the conventions of their time. Across both world wars, far from being a small part of covert operations, women ran spy networks and escape lines, parachuted behind enemy lines, and interrogated prisoners. And, back in Bletchley and Whitehall, women’s vital administrative work in MI offices kept the British war engine running.
In this major, panoramic history, Helen Fry looks at the rich and varied work women undertook as civilians and in uniform. From spies in the Belgian network “La Dame Blanche,” knitting coded messages into jumpers, to those who interpreted aerial images and even ran entire sections, Fry shows just how crucial women were in the intelligence mission. Filled with hitherto unknown stories, Women in Intelligence places new research on record for the first time and showcases the inspirational contributions of these remarkable women.Read more

Women in Revolt!: Art and Activism in the UK 1970–90
A timely exploration of the work and lived experiences of a postwar generation of women artists that have largely been omitted from art historical narratives, Women in Revolt! surfaces the wealth and diversity of work created in the UK during the 1970s and 80s, a period of seismic social and political change.Across a wide variety of mediums including painting, drawing, sculpture, performance, film and photography, this extensive exhibition book reflects on how women’s needs were marginalised within mainstream culture and reveals how artists used radical ideas and methods to confront issues that will resonate with contemporary audiences ― from access to healthcare and class struggles to ecological disaster, racism and misogyny.
Featuring essays on feminist film distribution, the visibility of Black and South Asian women artists, Section 28 and the AIDS pandemic, Greenham Common and the peace movement, and the intersection of punk, feminism and art, Women in Revolt! celebrates the full diversity of what was a highly creative, politically engaged and determined community of women that paved the way for future generations and, ultimately, changed the face of British culture.

Women in White Coats: How the First Women Doctors Changed the World of Medicine
The New York Times Bestseller
The triumphant story of three courageous women who become the first female doctors.
‘These women changed the world’ – Nina Sankovitch, bestselling author of American Rebels
In the early 1800s, women were dying in large numbers from treatable diseases because they avoided receiving medical care. Examinations performed by male doctors were often demeaning and painful, and women faced damaging social stigma from illness.
Despite countless obstacles, Elizabeth Blackwell, Elizabeth Garrett Anderson and Sophia Jex-Blake fought for a woman’s place in the male-dominated medical field. The three pioneers earned medical degrees and paved the way for other women to do the same, then built women-run hospitals and teaching colleges – creating for the first time medical care for women by women.

Women of Abstract Expressionism (The Oxford Research Centre in the Humanities/Princeton University Press Lec)
The celebrated survey of female Abstract Expressionist artists revealing the richness and lasting influence of their workThe artists Jay DeFeo, Helen Frankenthaler, Grace Hartigan, Elaine de Kooning, Lee Krasner, Joan Mitchell, and many other women played major roles in the development of Abstract Expressionism, which flourished in New York and San Francisco in the 1940s and 1950s and has been recognized as the first fully American modern art movement. Though the contributions of these women were central to American art of the twentieth century, their work has not received the same critical attention as that of their male counterparts.
Women of Abstract Expressionism is a long-overdue survey. Lavishly illustrated with full-color plates emphasizing the expressive freedom of direct gesture and process at the core of the movement, this book features biographies of more than forty artists, offering insight into their lives and work. Essays by noted scholars explore the techniques, concerns, and legacies of women in Abstract Expressionism, shedding light on their unique experiences. This groundbreaking book reveals the richness of the careers of these important artists and offers keen new reflections on their work and the movement as a whole.Published in association with the Denver Art Museum

Women of Means: The Fascinating Biographies of Royals, Heiresses, Eccentrics and Other Poor Little Rich Girls (Stories of the Rich & Famous, Famous Women) (Celebrating Women)
A Glimpse Behind the Façade of Rich and Famous Women
“…wild, witty, gossipy, and glamourous. A sheer delight.” ―Becca Anderson, author of Badass Women Give the Best Advice
#1 Best Seller in Women’s Studies and Biographies of the Rich & Famous and Royalty
An intimate portrait of women of privilege. As Becca Anderson recommends, read about “heiress Barbara Hutton’s outrageous lifestyle, Jackie O as a step-mom, Patty Hearst’s many adventures, Peggy Guggenheim’s collection of art (and men), and Almira Carnarvon, the real-life counterpart to Lady Cora of Downton Abbey.”
The grass isn’t greener on the other side. Heiresses have always been viewed with eyes of envy. They were the ones for whom the cornucopia had been upended, showering them with unimaginable wealth and opportunity. However, through intimate historical biographies, Women of Means shows us that oftentimes the weaving sisters saved their most heart-wrenching tapestries for the destinies of wealthy women.
Happily never after. From the author of Behind Every Great Man, we now have Women of Means, vignettes of the women who were slated from birth―or marriage―to great privilege, only to endure lives which were the stuff Russian tragic heroines are made of. They are the nonfictional Richard Corys―those not slated for happily ever after.
Women of Means is a non-fiction best seller, full of the best biographies of all time. Some of the women whose silver spoons rusted include:
- Liliane Bettencourt, whose chemist father created L’Oreal… and was a Nazi collaborator
- Nica Rothschild, who traded her gilded life to become the Baroness of Bebop
- Jocelyn Wildenstein, who became a cosmetology-enhanced cat-woman
- Ruth Madoff, the dethroned queen of Manhattan
- Patty Hearst, who trod the path from heiress… to terrorist
Fans of Women of Means will want to try other Marlene Wagman-Geller books including Fabulous Female Firsts, Great Second Acts, Still I Rise, Unabashed Women, and Women Who Launch.

WOOD! Identifying and Using Hundreds of Woods Worldwide by Eric Meier (2015-10-10)
Understanding Earth s most fascinating natural resource: books about wood usually come from one of two very opposite poles: there are either craftoriented books filled mainly with pretty pictures, but with very weak or vague data, or there are thinly veiled scientific books, filled with an overabundance of data: burying the uninitiated in microscope images and confusing terminology. This book hopes to selectively bring together the best of both worlds: written from a craftsperson s perspective, it also seeks to glean the wealth of scientific knowledge and bring it into practical reach for woodworkers everywhere. Over 350 woods covered. 100 plus fullpage profiles. 100 plus halfpage profiles for lesscommon woods. Guides for distinguishing lookalike woods. Detailed identification data and strength properties.Read more

Woodland Dance! (Boynton on Board)
The moose plays the cello. The deer, violin. And it’s ONE-two-three, ONE-two-three, time to begin. This mystical, waltzing board book from the one and only Sandra Boynton is a magical book to share with a magical child.Woodland animals heed the call of the fox’s bugle to join the woodland dance in a moonlit glade, dancing all night to the music of the Woodland Dance Trio. As the animals wander off to bed, the Trio plays one last piece to welcome the sun in this rhythmic story that’s a lovely, lyrical way to start or end the day.
They waltz, or they foxtrot.
They pivot and prance.
And they dance. And they dance.
