SIGNS for DEAF DOGS 2 British Sign Language (BSL): Holly’s Story (Let’s Sign BSL)
The first edition of Signs for Deaf Dogs came a from an idea initiated and developed by Suzanne Williams, a deaf dog owner, BSL advocate and Deaf Dog Network (DDN) member to help spread information about dogs who are deaf and also to encourage owners to use some simple hand signals borrowed from the lexicon of British Sign Language (BSL) to aid communication with their pets. The original 25 signs covered basic needs and this second edition includes an additional 22 signs that have been suggested by deaf dog owners. They are presented one sign per page, clear and simple in flashcard format. This edition is printed in black and white as a more cost-effective way of including more content and is also available on Kindle – ideal for smart phone and tablet.
In addition to extra signs, this edition also contains Holly’s Story – a touching glimpse of a sweet natured dog and her adoptive family, who took Holly in when she was unloved and unwanted.
There are widely accepted hand signals that are used with hearing dogs. The signs contained in this booklet are aimed at owners and trainers who would like to use or adapt BSL signs for their deaf dogs and also be recognised by deaf adults that use British Sign Language too.

Let’s Sign and DOWN SYNDROME: Signs for Children with Special Needs
This collection of British Sign Language (BSL) Signs provides a Core Vocabulary starting point for learners, with 280 signs arranged in topics essential to everyday experiences rather than ‘stages’ which may not match the diverse needs of all its users.
Dr Wendy Uttley’s introduction, guidelines, practice sentences and early language development activities, clearly outline how the use of signs and speech together can help language and communication develop, pointing out the benefits and enjoyment it can bring to all involved.
This is not only relevant for children and young people with Down Syndrome but is equally beneficial to the estimated 6 – 8% of children between the ages of 0 – 11 who have additional speech, language and communication needs.
The engaging line drawings with written descriptions give clear details of handshapes and movements with particular attention to the face, a crucial element in all of our communication and for children and young people with additional language and communication needs in particular.

Signs Make Sense: A Guide to British Sign Language (Human horizons series)
Interest in British Sign Language (BSL) is growing at a fantastic rate, and classes for hearing people are mushrooming all over the country. This lively introduction to the principles of the language and its vocabulary will therefore be widely welcomed, giving a vivid insight into a form of communication that can appear difficult for those whose first language is English. As the author takes pains to stress, BSL is not a mimed version of English. Equally rich and complex, it is visual, gestural and spatial, able to convey information and subtleties of meaning as fluently as any spoken language. Once learners have ceased to think in terms of individual words, they will come to revel in a language that involves the whole person: facial and bodily expression and movement, eye contact and gaze, lip pattern and the fluid movements of the signs themselves, all combining to form an integrated language system with rules of its own. Using detailed drawings throughout to illustrate nuances of meaning, the author groups the signs according to type, introducing each theme and showing how facial expressions, hand and finger movements and placements are used and combined to vary the sense of what is being communicated. Her aim is to equip the reader with a basic understanding of the principles of sign language and a working knowledge of its vocabulary. In an ideal world BSL would be part of every school’s curriculum, whether the pupils were deaf or not, thus giving deaf people the status in society which is their right. Meanwhile, this book will make an important contribution to the growing interest in learning the language, so that more and more people will appreciate that signs really do make sense.Read more

REVIEW by LIMPING CHICKEN– “The World’s Most Popular Deaf Blog”
Review by Rebecca-Anne Withey.
“I’ve been enjoying a book from the Let’s Sign BSL series by Cath Smith.BSL Baby Sign Link book is a first for DeafBooks due to how the illustrations also feature QR codes to scan and link to video clips of moving images – so you can see the signs in action! The video links are by Remark! and demonstrated by a Deaf BSL user.
The illustrations in the book are beautifully clear, with easy to follow instructions yet I was anxious how the video clips would work, being the technophobe I am!
I needn’t have worried. All you need is an internet connection, a smart phone and to download a free scanner straight onto your phone.
Not only does the book feature a wide range of every day signs from food and drink to praises such as well done and good boy/girl, it also has a clear chart of the finger spelling alphabet as well as descriptions of basic hand shapes (which I wasn’t previously aware of!)
The series of signs are divided into chapters such as Going Out, Making Things Better and In the Bathroom.”…………..
……….“I was pleased to see that DeafBooks has a much wider range of resources available, from flash cards and BSL songbooks to curriculum support and eBooks for family signs.
I will also be recommending their BSL series to friends of mine who have expressed interest in their hearing children learning BSL as at the moment in my area there are no BSL classes available for children.
Congratulations to DeafBooks and to Remark! for producing such a valuable resource. ”
Note from DeafBooks – the QR codes can also be scanned from the camera on smart phones and ipads.
.
There are additional notes and tips beneath the video clips and you can comment and ask questions. Your suggestions and feedback are welcome.

Language Signs and Calming Signals of Horses: Recognition and Application
This practical book helps you interpret and connect the physical signals that horses display in response to their environment. These signals are evident in the everyday actions, gestures and attitudes that horses communicate to each other, but are often so subtle that they can go unnoticed by humans. This book aims to rectify that, offering horse lovers and equine professionals an opportunity to gain a unique insight into their ‘horse’s world’.
Key features:
- includes detailed description of language signs of domestic horses, with a special emphasis on calming signals
- includes 275 pictures to visualize various language signs, calming signals, behaviour sequences and facial features
- presents communication ladders to show how a horse responds to incentives in his environment, and what signals he uses at certain moments
- contains tips on the use of the communication ladders and calming signals to improve the socialisation, training and wellbeing of your horse
- considers equine psychological stress from an environmental perspective, providing a valuable alternative to the current common clinical perspective.
After reading this book you will be more astute in spotting calming signals, displacement activities, stress signals and distance-increasing signals, and better able to see which stimuli your horse can handle and which he cannot. This means you will know what to do to calm your horse before his stress rises to an unmanageable level. Language Signs and Calming Signals of Horses is both fascinating and important reading for any equine veterinary practitioner, student or nurse, as well as horse owners and trainers.

Signs: The secret language of the universe
A modern guide to connecting with the other side, Signs is full of stories of hope. It teaches us how to recognise and interpret the life-changing messages from loved ones and spirit guides, by a renowned psychic medium.
Laura Lynne Jackson is a psychic medium and the author of the New York Times bestseller The Light Between Us. She possesses an incredible gift: the ability to communicate with loved ones who have passed, convey messages of love and healing, and impart a greater understanding of our interconnectedness. Though her abilities are exceptional, they are not unique, and that is the message at the core of this book. Understanding ‘the secret language of the universe’ is a gift available to all. As we learn to ask for and recognise signs from the other side, we will start to find meaning where before there was only confusion, and see light in the darkness. We may decide to change paths, push toward love, pursue joy, and engage with life in a whole new way.
In Signs, Jackson is able to bring the mystical into the everyday. She relates stories of people who have experienced uncanny revelations and instances of unexplained synchronicity, as well as others drawn from her own experience. There’s the lost child who appears to her mother as a deer that approaches her unhesitatingly at a highway rest stop; the name written on a dollar bill that lets a terrified wife know that her husband will be okay; the Elvis Presley song that arrives at the exact moment of Jackson’s own father’s passing; and many others. This is a book that is inspiring and practical, deeply comforting and wonderfully motivational, in asking us to see beyond ourselves to a more magnificent universal design.
