Rats: The Essential Guide to Ownership, Care, & Training for Your Pet
What pet can play fetch, learn its name, and still ride around in your pocket? It’s a rat, of course, and if you’re surprised by this, you should take some time to learn more about these delightful animals. Though wild rats have earned a bad rap for spreading illness and disease, domestic rats are clean and friendly animals that can be loving and wonderful additions to any family. If you have children that want pets but you’re not ready for a dog, a pet rat may be a great compromise. These little critters are fabulous pets for kids, requiring relatively simple care that even grade school children can understand and handle. They’re adaptable, affectionate, and tons of fun to watch and play with. With a life-span up to 5 years, your child can have a long relationship with her animals. Rats make great adult companions too, of course. Their minimal space requirements make them ideal for apartment dwellers, and their self-sufficiency and flexible sleeping habits mean they’ll adapt readily to even busy schedules. When they’re cared for properly, rats aren’t prone to many illnesses or health issues, and they’re affordable both up-front and in the long-term. Most of the challenges in rat care are caused by the animal’s remarkable intelligence. The information in this book will teach you how to properly house these notorious escape artists. You’ll also learn about the proper nutrition and care to keep your rats healthy in the long term, and how to identify and fix problems if they do come up. Introductions to breeding, showing, and training your animals are also included, if you want to take your rat ownership to the next level. Cuddly, smart, and entertaining, a pet rat combines the low time commitment of a small animal with the affection of a dog—and you may just find it’s the perfect pet for you.Read more

The Picture Book of Classic Cars: More Than 80 Classic Cars of the 20th Century (Picture Books – Transportation)
An Engaging Gift Book for Alzheimer’s Patients and Seniors with DementiaDo you sometimes find it difficult to engage your loved one with dementia? To help them stay calm in the midst of an emotional reaction? To find activities you can share with them that encourage peaceful interaction?
This book can help.
Thumbing through this beautiful picture book with your loved one is an activity that will capture their attention, engage their mind, and encourage them to relax. It’s filled with more than 80 full-color, high-resolution photos of classic cars of the 20th century. While many seniors with dementia have difficulty with short-term memory, older memories are more accessible. Seeing these vehicles from decades past may inspire them to talk about the cars they’ve owned over the years and reminisce about time spent in them with family and friends.
You’ll find a lot of other picture books out there, mostly for kids. But it’s demeaning to give seniors books meant for children. Adult photography books are usually large and heavy, and they often include long, frustrating paragraphs of text.
At Sunny Street Books, we design books specifically for seniors with dementia. They’re lightweight yet high-quality, adult in nature, with nothing to distract your loved one from their enjoyment of the photos themselves. They’re small, manageable “coffee table books” that will help reinforce your loved one’s sense of self while preserving their dignity.
Families, caregivers, and assisted living staff can share this book with the people they care for. It is also an excellent activity for seniors with Parkinson’s disease or recovering from a stroke. Seniors with eyesight or strength challenges who find it difficult to hold a heavy book or read long paragraphs of text will also enjoy this book.
FEATURES
• Discreet Packaging.
At no time is anything mentioned about Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, or any other challenges the reader might be facing. This book can be given to your loved one without fear that they might feel embarrassed or offended.
• Beautiful Content.
This book is filled with carefully-curated, full-color, high-resolution photos of more than 80 classic cars of the 20th century.
• No Text.
This is a no-text, photos-only book. The only text in the book is on the title and copyright page.
• Manageable Size.
This is a 40-page, 6” x 9” softcover that’s comfortable to hold and easy to tuck into a bag.
• High Quality.
The quality of this book’s cover and its interior design are indistinguishable from books created for other readers. Just because a book is simple and uncomplicated doesn’t mean it has to be unattractive, unprofessional, or childish.
NOTES FOR CAREGIVERS
• Sit beside your loved one in a quiet place that is free of distractions.
• Allow them to hold the book if possible, and also turn the pages, which will enable them to become more engaged in the book.
• Put a pillow in their lap to support the book as you thumb through it together.
• Leave this book in an accessible place to allow your loved one to pick it up on their own when you’re not there.

Cars We Loved in the 1960s
If you owned a car in 1960s Britain, then you’ll love this blast back in time to when driving was still fun, highway speed limits were unheard-of (well, until 1965 anyway), and buying a new car was a thrilling family event. It was a golden period for iconic classic cars – the Mini Cooper, Jaguar E-type, AC Cobra and MGB – but also a time when British manufacturers really got their act together with stylish family models. Who can forget great little runabouts with evocative names like Anglia, Herald, Imp, Viva, Cortina and Hunter? Meanwhile, Rovers, Triumphs and Jags were delighting executives as they cruised along near-empty motorways. It was too good to last, of course, with regulations looming and fancy foreign cars creeping on to Britain’s driveways by the end of the decade. In this richly illustrated book, Giles Chapman recalls all the key cars of the era that you probably owned – or at least coveted – and brings the swinging ’60s back to life.

Cars We Loved in the 1970s
The 1970s saw some ground-breaking new metal in British showrooms: the Renault 5 established the new ‘supermini’ class, the Volkswagen Golf gave the average family car a hatchback and top quality, the Ford Capri made sporty cars available to everyone and, despite all of this, that old favourite the Ford Cortina continued to rule the sales charts. It was a funny old time to be a driver, and Britain started to experience a love/hate relationship with the four-wheeled machine that previously symbolised nothing but speed and freedom. The economic rollercoaster sent fuel prices soaring, while the country’s roads left something to be desire, and then there was the issue of those cars themselves: it seemed British manufacturers, beset by striking workers and falling quality standards, were stalling as Japan’s Datsuns and Toyotas cruised off with contented customers. Giles Chapman documents the whole turbulent decade stunningly illustrated book, from the cars that dominated our motoring lives to the much-maligned Morris Marina and Reliant Robin actually helped drivers out of a jam.

Cars We Loved in the 1980s
It was brash and it was loud – the 1980s put paid to the glumness of the ’70s and nowhere was that more obvious than in the cars we drove, which took a quantum leap in durability, performance, equipment and style. They had to: Japanese quality and European design were luring away ever more customers. Features such as fuel injection, turbochargers, computer-controlled systems and four-wheel drive became commonplace. This was also the decade that brought us the people-carrier and the off-roader, new classes of car that radically reshaped family transport. Meanwhile, seatbelt-wearing became law, the M25 opened, speed cameras appeared and ram-raiding was the new motoring nemesis. Relive everything car-related in Britain in the 1980s with Giles Chapman.

Questioning Technique Pocketbook
Research shows that when teachers think more about questioning – deepening their understanding, extending their range of strategies and planning their questions – responses from pupils improve and engagement and learning increase. Teachers’ questions play a critical role, not just for the thinking they provoke, but in the modelling of questioning skills and the development of curiosity. Using cartoons, diagrams and visual prompts to support the text, this highly practical Pocketbook is suitable for all teachers. It separates out the elements of questioning – framing them, delivering them, and responding to the answers – and offers both simple tweaks and fundamental shifts to turn instinctive practice into a highly effective teaching and learning tool. An introductory chapter looks at how questions stimulate learning and includes a range of questioning taxonomies and models. This leads on to how to build ‘a questioning environment’ that encourages participation, sharing, exploration and thoughtful responses. A section entitled ‘Framing Questions’ identifies different kinds of questions and how they work, and subsequent chapters cover ways to deliver questions and respond to the answers you are given. A final short section provides checklists for monitoring and improving practice. Gorden Pope has over 25 years’ experience in education as a teacher, LA adviser and now an independent consultant and Associate MA Ed. Tutor. The Khmer Empire: The History and Legacy of One of Southeast Asia’s Most Influential Empires
*Includes pictures
*Includes contemporary accounts
*Includes online resources and a bibliography for further reading
The Khmer Empire, also known as the Angkor Empire, was a powerful empire of Southeast Asia that was established in 802 CE and ended in 1431 with the invasion of the Siamese and abandonment of Angkor. The Khmer Empire was responsible for many of the historic monuments and temples found throughout the jungles of modern-day Cambodia, and also in other countries of Southeast Asia, all made possible by the fact the Khmer Empire reached across modern-day Cambodia, parts of Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam, making it a strategic trading partner with ships traveling from China and India.
Of all the architecture, the empire is best known for constructing Angkor Wat, one of the modern world’s greatest wonders. Known in English as Angkor Wat (“City Temple”), the gigantic complex was built by King Suryavarman II in the early 12th century to serve as the king’s state temple and capital city. Since it has remained so finely preserved, it has maintained religious significance for nearly 900 years, first dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu, and then Buddhist. Understandably, it has become one of Cambodia’s most potent symbols and tourist attractions, and it even appears on the Cambodian national flag. Angkor Wat continues to fascinate the world, both due to its sheer grandeur and size, as well as its ornamental decorations both inside and out. With political strife in Cambodia having cooled, Angkor Wat is now a major tourist attraction, bringing upwards of over half a million foreigners per year, which accounts for over half of the nation’s tourists.
As a result, the long-lasting influence that this empire had on the people of Cambodia can still be felt today, with Angkor Wat being featured on the national flag. The Khmer Empire: The History and Legacy of One of Southeast Asia’s Most Influential Empires chronicles the remarkable history of the Khmer and their impact on the region. Along with pictures depicting important people, places, and events, you will learn about the Khmer Empire like never before.Read more

Inventing the Victorians
Suppose that everything we think we know about ‘The Victorians’ is wrong? That we have persistently misrepresented the culture of the Victorian era, perhaps to make ourselves feel more satisfyingly liberal and sophisticated? What if they were much more fun than we ever suspected? Matthew Sweet’s Inventing the Victorians has some revelatory – and entertaining – answers for us.
As Sweet shows us in this brilliant study, many of the concepts that strike us as terrifically new – political spin-doctoring, extravagant publicity stunts, hardcore pornography, anxieties about the impact of popular culture upon children – are Victorian inventions. Most of the pleasures that we imagine to be our own, the Victorians enjoyed first: the theme park, the shopping mall, the movies, the amusement arcade, the crime novel and the sensational newspaper report. They were engaged in a well-nigh continuous search for bigger and better thrills. If Queen Victoria wasn’t amused, then she was in a very small minority . . .
Matthew Sweet’s book is an attempt to re-imagine the Victorians; to suggest new ways of looking at received ideas about their culture; to distinguish myth from reality; to generate the possibility of a new relationship between the lives of nineteenth-century people and our own.

The Actors’ Crucible: Port Talbot and the Making of Burton, Hopkins, Sheen and All the Others
The town of Port Talbot has long been seen (quite literally) as synonymous with the steel industry. Yet it also has another claim to fame as the actorsx27 capital of Wales. It has produced a remarkable number of actors since the inter-war years. Richard Burton, Anthony Hopkins and Michael Sheen head the glittering cast but there are many others including early stars such as Ronald Lewis and Ivor Emmanuel, more recent figures like Rob Brydon and Di Botcher as well as a cluster of exciting young actorsstarting to make their names in the West End and on the big and small screen. This book suggests explanations for this phenomenon. Its author is a historical biographer who hails from Port Talbot and has done extensive research including numerous interviews. It explores the provision of educational and cultural facilities for young people over the years and demonstrates a commitment to drama that is deeply embedded in the townx27s history. It tells in some depth the stories of the super-stars but in a novel way, focusing on how they emerged and on those who nurtured their talent, presenting the actors as part of a tradition that was set in motion even before Richard Burton began to make his mark. It surveys the careers of fifty actors from Port Talbot and it considers what its most famous stars have put back into their community, culminating in the spectacular three-day event of Easter 2011 when Michael Sheen resurrected Port Talbotx27s pride and hopes through the immersive theatrical experience of The Passion.Written at a time of mixed fortunes for actors when funding for training is threatened yet opportunities for theatre and film work are expanding within Wales, this book puts centre-stage a town, its actors and those who guide them and so offers a new kind of cultural history. Such an approach also raises wider questions about the importance of the arts and of drama in particular to the wellbeing of communities.Read more

Funny Weather: Art in an Emergency
In this inspiring collection of essays, acclaimed writer and critic Olivia Laing makes a brilliant case for why art matters, especially in the turbulent political weather of the twenty-first century.
‘Never has a publication been more timely’ – Dazed
‘A brave writer whose books open up fundamental questions about life and art’ – TelegraphFunny Weather brings together a career’s worth of Laing’s writing about art and culture, examining their roles in our political and emotional lives. She profiles Jean-Michel Basquiat and Georgia O’Keeffe, interviews Hilary Mantel and Ali Smith, writes love letters to David Bowie and Freddie Mercury, and explores loneliness and technology, women and alcohol, sex and the body. With characteristic originality and compassion, she celebrates art as a force of resistance and repair, an antidote to a frightening political time.
We’re often told art can’t change anything. In Funny Weather, Laing argues that it can. It changes how we see the world, it exposes inequality, and it offers fertile new ways of living.

The Platinum Jubilee Cookbook: Recipes and stories from Her Majesty’s representatives around the world
Winner of ‘Best in the World’ at Gourmand World Cookbook Awards, 2023
19th century British Prime Minister Lord Palmerston once declared that ‘dining is the soul of diplomacy’ and this unique and sumptuous new book, published as part of the celebrations for Her Majesty The Queen’s 70 years on the Throne, presents 70 recipes from British embassies and high commissions around the world.
With a foreword by Their Royal Highnesses the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall, this book celebrates the landmark occasion of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee by bringing 70 recipes – many of them served during Royal Visits – that are proudly British, inspired by local influences from the embassy’s host country, or a fusion of the two. Throughout, the book shows off the spectacular food and drink produce found within our shores that our embassies are proud to showcase around the world, including:
· Spanish Marmalade, from the Madrid embassy
· Green Fish Curry, from the Islamabad high commission
· Jollof Rice, from the Abuja high commission
· Mince Spies, from ‘C’, Chief of MI6
· Cardamom Lamb, from the New Delhi high commission
· Chicken Wellington, from the Lisbon embassy
· Toffee Apple and Rhubarb Crumble, from Chevening House
· Whisky-laced Bread & Butter Pudding, from the Washington D.C. embassyAlongside the delectable recipes, stories abound of culinary diplomacy in action. Contrary to the clichés, you will not find an Ambassador’s table piled high with Ferrero Rocher, but food is central to the diplomatic cause. Ameer Kotecha delves into the Foreign Office archives to reveal diplomatic dinner party anecdotes through the years – the good, the bad and the highly entertaining – and provides contemporary stories of food being used as a potent diplomatic tool. For the first time, this book tells the story of how nations break bread as a means to resolving differences, and seek to get to the negotiating table by first starting at the dinner table.
A mixture of recipes, food history, anecdote and stunning photography, this book is an engrossing read for anyone with an interest in food, diplomacy or British heritage. With contributions from Her Majesty’s representatives around the world, it is also a celebration of Britishness that makes for a unique memento for the Platinum Jubilee, delving into an under-explored part of Her Majesty The Queen’s reign.
The author is donating 100% of royalties from sales of this book to two charities: The Queen’s Commonwealth Trust (QCT) and The Prince of Wales’s Charitable Fund (PWCF).

Indian Icon: A Cult Called Royal Enfield
More than just the brand name of a legendary bike! Few brands inspire the kind of devotion that an Enfield does. Its distinctive look and feel, the sound of its engine and the image that it creates of its rider have all contributed to putting the brand on the kind of pedestal that others could only dream of. From the beginning of the brand’s journey in India in the early 1950s, the Enfield bikes have had quite a ride. Initial success and acceptance notwithstanding, by the 1980s, the brand was considered an underachiever and a basket case. Enter Vikram Lal of Eicher in 1990. Lal’s enthusiasm for the brand gave it a new lease of life. Later, his son Siddhartha’s time at the helm saw marketing, product and vision all come together to catapult the bike to iconic status. In the past few years, Enfield has come to represent successful business turnarounds even as its bikes have found newer and newer converts. Indian Icon: A Cult Called Royal Enfield by former Mint journalist Amrit Raj maps the trail-blazing story of the brand, the company and, most of all, the individuals who have made it what it is. It is also the story of the clash of the old guard with the new leading to dramatic changes in the business. In a first, the book bares the behind-the-scenes takeover dramas and the bare-knuckled battle to create a premium homegrown consumer brand for the global markets. Extensively researched and expertly narrated, the book takes you to the heart of the Royal Enfield story. A worthy addition to the shelf of both business readers as well as Royal Enfield aficionados.Read more

Russia: Revolution and Civil War 1917-1921
‘A masterpiece of history’
DAILY TELEGRAPHBetween 1917 and 1921 a devastating struggle took place in Russia following the collapse of the Tsarist empire. Many regard this savage civil war as the most influential event of the modern era. An incompatible White alliance of moderate socialists and reactionary monarchists stood little chance against Trotsky’s Red Army and Lenin’s single-minded Communist dictatorship. Terror begat terror, which in turn led to even greater cruelty with man’s inhumanity to man, woman and child. The struggle became a world war by proxy as Churchill deployed weaponry and troops from the British empire, while armed forces from the United States, France, Italy, Japan, Poland and Czechoslovakia played rival parts.
Using the most up to date scholarship and archival research, Antony Beevor, author of the acclaimed international bestseller Stalingrad, assembles the complete picture in a gripping narrative that conveys the conflict through the eyes of everyone from the worker on the streets of Petrograd to the cavalry officer on the battlefield and the woman doctor in an improvised hospital.

A Brief History of Witchcraft and the Occult: A Beginner’s Journey from the Surreal to the Scientific, From Crystals and Tarot to Science and Philosophy
Journey back with this brief and introductory history to the real origin of witchcraft and the occult—and find out why they’ve been feared and misunderstood for thousands of years.
From ancient Egyptian healers and Celtic druids to the Salem witch trial victims and modern-day Wiccans, witches have always been misunderstood. Because of that, they’ve been feared, persecuted, and blamed for everything from failing crops and miscarriages to wars and famines.
But what’s the true story behind caricatures like the Sanderson Sisters and the Wicked Witch of the West? When and where did witchcraft begin, and how has it evolved over time? Which practices and traditions have survived from the ancient world? And why do people really fear witches?
To find the answers, we have to journey back almost to the beginning of history, to a time when magic and those who practiced it were respected members of society. Over time, that would change. By tracing that evolution, we can learn more not only about witchcraft and the occult, but about why our society is both intrigued by and afraid of it.
In this fascinating book, you’ll learn about the various ways magic has been used in both the ancient and modern world, including:
- How ancient Egyptians used magic for healing and protection…but also vengeance
- Why magicians in ancient Mesopotamia held the keys to civilization
- How a secret occult society led to the Western fascination with mystical, forbidden knowledge
- The real story behind the Salem witch trials and the European witch hunts
- How 19th-century women used seances and ouija boards to advocate for their rights
- The pagan practices that led to the modern-day Wicca movement
- Why crystals and tarot cards have remained popular for thousands of years
- Why witches are still feared and misunderstood today
And much more!
Whether you’re a history buff, modern-day magic practitioner, or just curious about the history of witchcraft, this book will give you a clearer picture of how magic has been practiced, understood, and misunderstood from ancient to modern times.
Fun and easy to read, it’s a great introduction to the role witchcraft has played in cultures around the world, the real historical figures who helped shape present-day perspectives on witches, and the circumstances that have led to witches and the occult being shunned.
Reading this book will help you:
- Understand the role witchcraft played in ancient civilizations
- Learn which elements of witchcraft and the occult are still around today
- Dispel dangerous myths about witches and the occult
- Improve your knowledge and take your study deeper

They don’t include craps, roulette, keno, or baccarat for reasons they’ll explain. This book, was written for the not quite as experienced aspiring gambler. It shows you everything you need to learn and do if you want to gamble for a living from both the practical and the technical standpoints. The rest is up to you.Read more
