  • Fit For Purpose: The best book on opening and running your own gym. (Gym Business, Fitness Startup, Managing Gym, Opening Gym, Gym Classes,)

    02

I wrote this book to share my extensive experience in opening and running a successful gym.

We opened our first CrossFit gym in November 2014 in the City of London and it quickly became a wonderful success – so much so that we opened our second gym in December 2017. I hope to share this story with others, to inspire and guide them with practical insights on this business and the world of fitness. My prospective readers are other ambitious fitness professionals who are hungry to open their own dream gym. This book will save them from stress and confusion and will provide them with clarity, structure and a far deeper understanding of the fitness business. The book covers all aspects of planning a new gym and then looks at running that gym once it is opened. I want other people to benefit from my experience. I want them to be able to avoid unnecessary mistakes and have complete awareness of all essential parts of the gym business. By having a good structure and clear overall picture of what they need to focus on, they will be calmer, more confident in their actions and their efforts will be smarter and directed wisely. Because of this, I had to write this book! I’ll be very pleased to see other happy gym business owners who are doing well – hopefully at least partly, because of my book. I want to leave a legacy, I don’t want to take my experience with me and never share it.

My book is divided into two parts. “Before opening the doors” and “After opening the doors for the first time”.

    The first part focusses on:

    • What we had to go through to secure the premises
    • How we raised the money and attracted investors for our dream project
    • What was important in picking the right space
    • What fitness concept to run so we positively impacted as many people as possible and simultaneously made the most of our premises
    • How we branded and designed our small cozy gym
    • What equipment we purchased
    • What marketing strategies we executed in order to build our subscription membership
    • And many other elements which were crucial in setting up the gym.

The second part of my book focusses on the actual running of the gym, after we opened the doors for the first time. Running a gym is very different from opening and setting up a gym. There are different skills needed for both parts of the business process. One person may be great at setting up the gym but a very poor manager who struggles to deal with all the day-to-day tasks and people management.

Both parts are challenging but for very different reasons. I describe:

    • How important it is to find and pick the right coaches
    • The importance of the role the coaches play in our business
    • How important the manager is in keeping caring staff onboard
    • What successful fitness programming should include
    • The importance of communication within staff and with members
    • The enormous impact of building a community
    • Which essential booking and payment systems to have
    • Which marketing channels we engaged with to really spread the word about our amazing gym, fitness concept and community
    • And many other things which together complete an elegant and well-functioning business.

This book is a must for any ambitious people who dream about having their own gym, living life on their terms, taking charge and making a difference to many people along the way. Take action and download this book now

  • The First World War: A New History

    02
A brilliant and penetrating new history of the First World War by one of the world’s foremost experts on the conflict. Reissued with a new introduction from the author.

Hew Strachan is one of the world’s foremost experts on the Great War of 1914-18. His on-going three-volume history of the conflict, the first of which was published in 2001, is likely to become the standard academic reference work: Max Hastings called it ‘one of the most impressive books of modern history in a generation’, while Richard Holmes hailed it as a ‘towering achievement’.

Now, Hew Strachan brings his immense knowledge to a one-volume work aimed squarely at the general reader. The inspiration behind the major Channel 4 series of the same name, to which Hew was chief consultant, THE FIRST WORLD WAR is a significant addition to the literature on this subject, taking as it does a uniquely global view of what is often misconceived as a prolonged skirmish on the Western Front. Exploring such theatres as the Balkans, Africa and the Ottoman Empire, Strachan assesses Britain’s participation in the light of what became a struggle for the defence of liberalism, and show how the war shaped the ‘short’ twentieth century that followed it.

Accessible, compelling and utterly convincing, this is modern history writing at its finest.

  • Hitler and Stalin: The Tyrants and the Second World War

    08

‘You have to read it’ Volodymyr Zelensky

‘Laurence Rees brilliantly combines powerful eye-witness testimony, vivid narrative and compelling analysis in this superb account’ Professor Sir Ian Kershaw, author of Hitler: Hubris and Hitler: Nemesis

‘In this fascinating study of two monsters, Rees is extraordinarily perceptive and original’ Antony Beevor
    _____________________

Two tyrants. Each responsible for the death of millions.

This compelling book on Hitler and Stalin – the culmination of thirty years’ work – examines the two leaders during the Second World War, when Germany and the Soviet Union fought the biggest and bloodiest war in history.

Hitler’s charismatic leadership may contrast with Stalin’s regimented rule by fear; and his intransigence later in the war may contrast with Stalin’s change in behaviour in response to events. But as bestselling historian Laurence Rees shows, at a macro level, both were prepared to create undreamt-of suffering – in Hitler’s case, most infamously the Holocaust – in order to build the utopias they wanted.

Using previously unpublished, startling eyewitness testimony from soldiers, civilians and those who knew both men personally, Laurence Rees – probably the only person alive who has met Germans who worked for Hitler and Russians who worked for Stalin – challenges long-held popular misconceptions about two of the most important figures in history. This is a master work from one of our finest historians.
    _____________________

‘Coming from one of the world’s experts on the Second World War, this is an important and original – and devastating – account of Hitler and Stalin as dictators. A must read’ Professor Robert Service, author of Stalin: A Biography

‘Impressive . . . well paced and well informed with an eye for telling anecdotes and colourful character sketches . . . Rees’ decision to add personal stories to his narrative adds an important layer to our understanding of both the dictators themselves and their victims’ Robert Gerwarth, The Daily Telegraph

  • Great Hatred: The Assassination of Field Marshal Sir Henry Wilson MP

    08

    THE IRISH TOP 10 BESTSELLER

A gripping investigation into one of Irish history’s greatest mysteries, Great Hatred reveals the true story behind one of the most significant political assassinations to ever have been committed on British soil.

‘Heart-stopping . . . The book is both forensic and a page-turner, and ultimately deeply tragic, for Ireland as much as for the murder victim.’
    MICHAEL PORTILLO

‘Gripping from start to finish. McGreevy turns a forensic mind to a political assassination that changed the course of history, uncovering a trove of unseen evidence in the process.’
ANITA ANAND, author of The Patient Assassin

    ‘Invaluable.’ IRISH TIMES

    ‘Intelligent and insightful.’ IRISH INDEPENDENT

On 22 June 1922, Sir Henry Wilson – the former head of the British army and one of those credited with winning the First World War – was shot and killed by two veterans of that war turned IRA members in what was the most significant political murder to have taken place on British soil for more than a century. His assassins were well-educated and pious men. One had lost a leg during the Battle of Passchendaele. Shocking British society to the core, the shooting caused consternation in the government and almost restarted the conflict between Britain and Ireland that had ended with the Anglo-Irish Treaty just five months earlier. Wilson’s assassination triggered the Irish Civil War, which cast the darkest of shadows over the new Irish State.

Who ordered the killing? Why did two English-born Irish nationalists kill an Irish-born British imperialist? What was Wilson’s role in the Northern Ireland government and the violence which matched the intensity of the Troubles fifty years later? Why would Michael Collins, who risked his life to sign a peace treaty with Great Britain, want one of its most famous soldiers dead, and how did the Wilson assassination lead to Collins’ tragic death in an ambush two months later?

Drawing upon newly released archival material and never-before-seen documentation, Great Hatred is a revelatory work that sheds light on a moment that changed the course of Irish and British history for ever.

‘McGreevy provides more than the anatomy of a political murder; in reconstructing this era of blood, poverty and wartime trauma, he also gives full expression to the terrible forces that WB Yeats once called the “fanatic heart” and the “great hatred”.’
    THE TIMES

‘Thoughtful and well-researched . . . an important and valuable addition to the library of the Irish Revolution.’

  • A History of War Surgery

    01
Since antiquity, war surgery has been a profession demanding a special kind of human: one able to face seemingly insurmountable problems; one able to keep a lucid mind and steady hands in extraordinary circumstances; one able to shoulder tremendous burdens; and one able to harden himself or herself, time and again, to failure and self-doubt. It is, and always has been, a harrowing business, and only for the brave. Dr John Wright charts the evolution of war surgery from ancient times to the present day, investigating its breakthroughs, its pitfalls, and the people and conflicts that have shaped it. But above all, this is a personal history, calling on the first-hand accounts of the surgeons, soldiers, medics, nurses, stretcher-bearers, and many others who have served in battle and come face-to-face with its most appalling horrors. This is not a book for the faint-hearted. It is one that searches for and delivers the truth about those who, with unerring skill, courage and determination, endeavour to undo the terrible damage we habitually inflict upon ourselves.

  • Burma ’44: The Battle That Turned Britain’s War in the East

    08

‘A thrilling blow-by-blow account’ The Times
‘A first-rate popular history of a fascinating and neglected battle… a veritable page-turner’ BBC History

In February 1944, a rag-tag collection of clerks, drivers, doctors, muleteers, and other base troops, stiffened by a few dogged Yorkshiremen and a handful of tank crews managed to hold out against some of the finest infantry in the Japanese Army, and then defeat them in what was one of the most astonishing battles of the Second World War.

What became know as The Defence of the Admin Box, fought amongst the paddy fields and jungle of Northern Arakan over a fifteen-day period, turned the battle for Burma. Not only was it the first decisive victory for British troops against the Japanese, more significantly, it demonstrated how the Japanese could be defeated. The lessons learned in this tiny and otherwise insignificant corner of the Far East, set up the campaign in Burma that would follow, as General Slim’s Fourteenth Army finally turned defeat into victory.

Burma ’44 is a tale of incredible drama. As gripping as the story of Rorke’s drift, as momentous as the battle for the Ardennes, the Admin Box was a triumph of human grit and heroism and remains one of the most significant yet undervalued conflicts of World War Two.

The new, sweeping World War II book from James Holland, THE SAVAGE STORM, is available for pre-order now.

    08
‘He was a man of fairly firm fibre, but there was something in this sudden, uncontrollable shriek of horror which chilled his blood and pringled in his skin. Coming in such a place and at such an hour, it brought a thousand fantastic possibilities into his head…’

The Victorian fin de siècle: the era of Decadence, The Yellow Book, the New Woman, the scandalous Oscar Wilde, the Empire on which the sun never set. This heady brew was caught nowhere better than in the revival of the Gothic tale in the late Victorian age, where the undead walked and evil curses, foul murder, doomed inheritance and sexual menace played on the stretched nerves of the new mass readerships. This anthology collects together some of the most famous examples of the Gothic tale in the 1890s, with stories by Arthur Conan Doyle, Vernon Lee, Henry James and Arthur Machen, as well as some lesser known yet superbly chilling tales from the era. The introduction explores the many reasons for the Gothic revival, and how it spoke to the anxieties of the moment.

  • The Great American Drug Deal: A New Prescription for Innovative and Affordable Medicines

    01
Developing life-changing drugs is risky and expensive—but that’s not what makes them unaffordable.

Drug pricing is a staple of every news cycle and political debate. And while we’ve struggled for decades to agree on solutions that serve all patients without jeopardizing the invention of new medicines, many Americans suffer because they can’t afford the drugs they need.

Do we really have to choose between affordability and innovation?

In The Great American Drug Deal, scientist and industry expert Peter Kolchinsky answers this question with a decisive No. The pharmaceutical industry’s commitment to creating new lifesaving drugs destined to become inexpensive generics can be balanced by the healthcare system’s commitment to making those drugs affordable for all patients—a Biotech Social Contract. Through deep research and compelling stories of breakthroughs and breakdowns, Kolchinsky presents solutions for striking a balance that are bold yet realistic and tackle today’s most pressing questions, including:

Why doesn’t insurance make drugs affordable?
How can we prevent price-jacking of older drugs?
Why are drugs more expensive in America than elsewhere?
How can we guarantee that all medicines eventually go generic so they are only temporarily expensive?
What systemic failures led to the opioid crisis, and how can we prevent the next one?

The Great American Drug Deal offers clear-eyed scrutiny of all players in the industry and examines vital ideas for closing loopholes, encouraging investment, dealing with bad actors, and educating consumers. It’s time we resolve to support patients and fuel discoveries that ease suffering now and for generations to come.

    • The Deals that Made the World: The Billion Dollar Deals and How They’re Changing Our World

      08

      ‘The book to read’ GQ

      ‘A revelatory book’ John Lewis-Stempel

While the laws that guide our lives are written by the politicians we elect, much of the world around us – from the food we eat to the products we buy to the medications we take – is shaped by private negotiations and business deals few of us know about.

For twenty years, Peretti has interviewed the people behind the decisions that have altered our world, from CEOs of multinational corporations to politicians, economists, and scientists. In The Deals that Made the World, Peretti draws on his vast knowledge to reveal a host of fascinating and startling connections, from how Wall Street’s actions on food commodities helped spark the Arab Spring to the link between the AIDS epidemic in 1980s San Francisco and the subprime mortgage crisis of 2008. He proves a sure guide, combining both eye-opening on-the-ground reporting and a narrative flair that makes esoteric financial and business concepts clear and understandable.

Like Steven Levitt, Nassim Nicholas Taleb, Brad Stone, Michael Lewis, and Malcolm Gladwell, Peretti takes the ordinary and turns it inside out to give us a compelling new perspective on our lives and our world.

    • Last Years of the London Titan

      04
Already depleted by withdrawals in the London Buses Ltd era, the Leyland Titan fleet of T class was divided upon privatisation between three new companies; London Central, Stagecoach East London and Stagecoach Selkent. Together with a host of smaller companies operating second-hand acquisitions, the Titans’ declining years between 1998 and 2003 are explored in this pictorial account that encompasses both standard day-to-day routes, emergency deployments and rail replacement services. Only small numbers remained to usher out the type altogether at the end of 2005, when step-entrance double-deckers as a whole were banished from the capital.

    • Sleeping Beauties: Stephen King and Owen King

      02

In this spectacular father/son collaboration, Stephen King and Owen King tell the highest of high-stakes stories: what might happen if women disappeared from the world of men?

All around the world, something is happening to women when they fall asleep; they become shrouded in a cocoon-like gauze. If awakened, if the gauze wrapping their bodies is disturbed, the women become feral and spectacularly violent…

In the small town of Dooling, West Virginia, the virus is spreading through a women’s prison, affecting all the inmates except one. Soon, word spreads about the mysterious Evie, who seems able to sleep – and wake. Is she a medical anomaly or a demon to be slain?

The abandoned men, left to their increasingly primal devices, are fighting each other, while Dooling’s Sheriff, Lila Norcross, is just fighting to stay awake.

And the sleeping women are about to open their eyes to a new world altogether.

    • The House of Islam: A Global History

      06

      ‘A powerful corrective’ Guardian

‘This should be compulsory reading’ Peter Frankopan, author of The Silk Roads

‘For anyone interested in the future of Islam, both in Britain and the Islamic world, this is an important book’ The Times

The gulf between Islam and the West is widening. A faith rich with strong values and traditions, observed by nearly two billion people is seen by the West as something to be feared rather than understood. Sensational headlines and hard-line policies spark enmity, while ignoring the feelings, narratives and perceptions that preoccupy Muslims today.

The House of Islam seeks to provide entry to the minds and hearts of Muslims the world over. It introduces us to the kindness of Mohammed, the beauty of Islamic art and the permeation of the divine in public spaces; and the tension between mysticism and literalism that still threatens the religion.

Ed Husain expertly and compassionately guides us through the nuances of Islam and its people, contending that the Muslim world need not be a stranger to the West, nor its enemy, but a peaceable ally.

    • African Politics: A Very Short Introduction (Very Short Introductions)

Africa is a continent of 54 countries and over a billion people. However, despite the rich diversity of the African experience, it is striking that continuations and themes seem to be reflected across the continent, particularly south of the Sahara. Questions of underdevelopment, outside exploitation, and misrule are characteristic of many – if not most-states in Sub-Saharan Africa.

In this Very Short Introduction Ian Taylor explores how politics is practiced on the African continent, considering the nature of the state in Sub-Saharan Africa and why its state structures are generally weaker than elsewhere in the world. Exploring the historical and contemporary factors which account for Africa’s underdevelopment, he also analyses why some African countries suffer from high levels of political violence while others are spared. Unveilling the ways in which African state and society actually function beyond the formal institutional façade, Taylor discusses how external factors – both inherited and contemporary – act upon the continent.

ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.

    • Expected Goals: The story of how data conquered football and changed the game forever

      07

Shortlisted for the William Hill Sports Book of the Year Award 2022

Football has always measured success by what you win, but only in the last twenty years have clubs started to think about how you win. Data has now suffused almost every aspect of how football is played, coached, scouted and consumed. But it’s not the algorithms or new metrics that have made this change, it’s the people behind them.

This is the story of modern football’s great data revolution and the group of curious, entrepreneurial personalities who zealously believed in its potential to transform the game. Central to this cast is Chris Anderson, an academic with no experience in football, who saw data as an opportunity to fundamentally change a sport that did not think it could be changed. His aim: to infiltrate the strange, insular world of professional football by establishing a club whose entire DNA could be built around data.

Expected Goals charts his remarkable journey into the heart of the modern game and reveals how clubs across the world, from Liverpool to Leipzig and Brentford to Bayern Munich, began to see how data could help them unearth new players, define radical tactics and plot their path to glory.
