• Placement Journal | Student Nurse: An Aid to Learning on Placement

    01
Placement as a Student Nurse is where you learn your craft. It can be exciting, daunting, exhilarating and overwhelming whether you are stepping in to placement for the first time or the umpteenth!

As a former Student Nurse, I always used to rely on a trusty notebook for each placement to write down key contact details for the area, the most common conditions encountered in the area and the most common medications used in the area as doing so helped me consolidate my learning and absorb the knowledge I was gaining in clinical practice. However, I could never find a notebook or journal that was specifically tailored to my needs as a Student Nurse going out on placement.

As a Practice Assessor, this method is one I also recommend to Student Nurses and thought it was about time I designed a specific journal which could be widely available for all Student Nurses, not just those who happen to have me as an assessor.

    Hope it helps,

    Stacey x

  • Nurses and Nursing (Britain’s Heritage)

    01
Nurses and nursing are firmly rooted in Britain’s heritage, for the profession as we know it today owes much to the pioneering work of Florence Nightingale. Before she helped establish the first nurse training school in Liverpool in the late 1800s, the women who looked after the sick were a motley mix. The role of the nurse has developed from the untrained handywoman and private nurse, through the early nurses who acted as ‘health missioners’, to the highly trained professionals we recognise today. Nurse training has evolved to reflect the advances in medical treatment and nurses have been able to engage more widely with the community by undergoing additional training as, for example, district nurses, school nurses, midwives, health visitors and mental health nurses. During both world wars, nurses made a special contribution on the home front and overseas. Using first-hand accounts from nurses through the ages, Susan Cohen takes us on a nostalgic journey through the history of nurses and nursing in Britain, from the pre-Nightingale days through to the post-NHS era. This book is part of the Britain’s Heritage series, which provides definitive introductions to the riches of Britain’s past, and is the perfect way to get acquainted with nurses and nursing in all their variety.

  • Accounting: A Very Short Introduction (Very Short Introductions)

    05
If you read the ‘business pages’ of a newspaper or if you listen to the financial news on the television or radio, you will often hear terms such as ‘liability’, ‘balance sheet’ or ‘earnings’. These terms turn up in non-financial contexts as well: ‘he was more of a liability than an asset’. If you invest in shares, have a building society account, or sit on a committee of the property company which owns your apartment block, you will receive financial statements every year. If you are a manager in a company, a hospital or a school, you will see accounting information often.

This Very Short Introduction provides a guide to understanding and using accounting information. Christopher Nobes explains the main areas of accounting work, from bookkeeping and financial reporting to auditing and management accounting.

  • Advertising: A Very Short Introduction (Very Short Introductions)

    06
How advertising works is not a question that has a simple answer. Advertising is a diverse entity and different campaigns work (or fail to work) in a plethora of different ways. Most advertising persuades people to buy things, but how? And who does it aim to persuade? And how are these decisions made? In this Very Short Introduction Winston Fletcher, an expert with extensive knowledge of advertising from the inside, aims to answer these questions, and in doing so, dispels some of the myths and misunderstandings surrounding the industry.

The book contains a short history of advertising and an explanation of how the industry works, and how each of the parties (the advertisers , the media and the agencies) are involved. It considers the extensive spectrum of advertisers and their individual needs. It also looks at the financial side of advertising and asks how advertisers know if they have been successful, or whether the money they have spent has in fact been wasted.

Fletcher concludes with a discussion about the controversial and unacceptable areas of advertising such as advertising products to children and advertising products such as cigarettes and alcohol. He also discusses the benefits of advertising and what the future may hold for the industry.

  • Marketing: A Very Short Introduction (Very Short Introductions)

    01
Very Short Introductions: Brilliant, Sharp, Inspiring

Marketing is pivotal in today’s world. Used for determining and satisfying the needs of the customer, it stands at the interface between an organisation and its environment. Marketing provides customer and competitor information to the organisation, as well as creating awareness of the company’s offering. As globalization creates increasing challenges to established marketing practices, marketing efforts need to reposition and adapt continuously to maintain an organisation’s ability to reach potential customers.

This Very Short Introduction provides a general overview of the function and importance of marketing to modern organisations. Kenneth Le Meunier-FitzHugh discusses how marketing remains central to creating competitive advantage, and why it needs to be forward looking and constantly reinventing itself in line with new developments in the marketplace, such as the growth of social media, and the importance of ethics and responsible marketing. He shows how this has led to the role of marketing expanding beyond advertising and promotion, encompassing a broader sense of customer relationship management. He also considers how marketers need to remain able to manage the marketing mix in response to their understanding of customer’s purchasing habits.

  • The English Civil War in 100 Facts

    02
The English Civil War pitted Parliament against the Crown following a breakdown in their relationship, ultimately caused by a struggle over power, religion and control. The Civil War split the country and resulted in the execution of Charles I and the exile of his son, and the English monarchy was replaced first by the Commonwealth of England and then the Protectorate. Oliver Cromwell dominated the politics of the new rule and still divides opinion today, with some seeing him as a brutal dictator and others seeing him as a hero of liberty. The English Civil War in 100 Facts examines the twenty years of intermittent warfare, covering the first, second and third wars, from the initial conflict with Charles I to the fight of Charles II’s supporters with the Rump Parliament. Dr Andrew Lacey guides us through some of the key figures and their stories as well as some of the key battles and politics in this period that drastically altered the structure of English rule.

  • The First World War: A Very Short Introduction (Very Short Introductions)

    08
By the time the First World War ended in 1918, eight million people had died in what had been perhaps the most apocalyptic episode the world had known. This Very Short Introduction provides a concise and insightful history of the ‘Great War’, focusing on why it happened, how it was fought, and why it had the consequences it did.

It examines the state of Europe in 1914 and the outbreak of war; the onset of attrition and crisis; the role of the US; the collapse of Russia; and the weakening and eventual surrender of the Central Powers. Looking at the historical controversies surrounding the causes and conduct of war, Michael Howard also describes how peace was ultimately made, and the potent legacy of resentment left to Germany.

  • A WAAF AT WAR: OR BALLOONS TO BLETCHLEY PARK

    05

This is Margaret’s story, an ordinary young woman from the shires who voluntarily joined the war against Germany and the Nazi Party.

It is a story that takes us from a small rural coal mining town to the sheer hard graft of handling highly hazardous barrage balloons, a sojourn at an operational bomber base.

From there we are taken into the almost monastic world of signals intelligence collection at Bletchley Park. Not for her the interminable copying of sacred texts, rather the transcribing of enemy signal traffic.

To this day Margaret will not talk about her work at Bletchley Park in any detail. This has caused frustration amongst historians, including Bletchley Park itself.

Winston Churchill described the young women at Bletchley as ‘the geese that laid the golden eggs and never cackled.’

    And so it has proved.

  • The Duke: 100 Chapters in the Life of Prince Philip

    08

The Archbishop of Canterbury called him ‘bloody rude’, courtiers feared he was ‘a foreign interloper out for the goodies’, daughter-in-law Sarah Ferguson found him ‘very frightening’ and the Queen Mother labelled him ‘the Hun’. Journalists have continually portrayed him as a gaffe-prone serial philanderer, with European outlets going way off-piste and claiming he has fathered 24 illegitimate children. Prince Philip says ‘the impression the public has got is unfair’, though there is no self-serving autobiography and his interviews with broadcasters or writers are done grudgingly. The Duke sets out to explore the man behind the various myths, drawing on interviews with relations, friends and courtiers and the Duke’s own words. It brings to life some rare aspects of his character, from a love of poetry and religion to his fondness for Duke Ellington and his fascination with UFOs. It also explains why for over seven decades he has been the Queen’s ‘strength and stay’ – and why he is regarded by many as a national treasure.

  • The Wicked Wit of the Royal Family

    05

The Wicked Wit of the Royal Family celebrates the flashes of fun and brilliance of the most famous family in the world.

There is no doubt that the British royal family is THE most famous family in the world. Watched and picked over in the media for everything from fashion choices to baby bumps, sporting achievements to nightclub preferences, there doesn’t seem to be a moment when they can escape public scrutiny. But, somehow, they still manage to maintain a sense of humour – and it’s those flashes of fun and brilliance that this book celebrates.

From Prince Philip’s gaffe-prone remarks (most of which appear ON camera rather than off) to the ‘in’ jokes shared by the knowing smiles of the younger royals and the Queen’s wickedly dry and often bitingly funny remarks; from Prince Charles’s asides to the Duchess of Cornwall to the self-deprecating smile of the Duchess of Cambridge and the belly laughs that appeal to Prince Harry. This book presents the other side of royal protocol and perhaps gives a glimpse of the real lives of this much-loved clan.

  • The Victorians: A Very Short Introduction (Very Short Introductions)

bVery Short Introductionsb: Brilliant, Sharp, Inspiring /b

The Victorian period may have come to an end over 120 years ago, but the Victorians continue to be a vital presence in the modern world. Contemporary Britain is still in large part Victorian in its transport networks, sewage systems, streets, and houses. Victorian cultural legacies, especially in art, science, and literature, are still celebrated. The first to have to grapple with many of the challenges of modern urban society, we continue to look to the Victorians for inspiration and solace. And we are increasingly aware of the ways their global actions shaped, often for ill, the world around us. Much mythologised, inexhaustibly controversial, the Victorians are an inescapable reference point for understanding the modern histories not just of Britain and its empire, but of the world.

In The Victorians: A Very Short Introduction Martin Hewitt offers a guide through the thickets of judgement and debate which have grown around the period and its people, to offer a historical overview of the Victorians and their legacies. He seeks to answer five crucial questions. Why have the Victorians continued occupy such a prominent place in the cultures of not just the anglophone world? How far does it make sense to think of a 64-year period arbitrarily given an identity by the longevity of the Queen as an identifiable historical period in a general sense? How justified are the value-laden versions of the Victorians which argue for the existence of a particular world view called ‘Victorianism’? Beyond ideology, what was Victorian Britain actually like – and in particular, what was distinctive about it? Who were the Victorians – not just the eminent few, but the population as a whole? And finally, how far and with what results did the Victorians and their culture spread across the globe?

In answering these questions, Hewitt cautions against some long-held orthodoxies, throws a light on some less well-known aspects of the period, and urges the importance of understanding the Victorians on their own terms if we are to effectively engage with their legacies.

  • Driving Forwards: A journey of resilience and empowerment after life-changing injury

    08

‘A book that’ll change your perspective on life. You’ll not be able to put it down.’ Fearne Cotton

‘Inspirational, eye-opening and deeply moving.’ Mail on Sunday

    ‘A searing read.’ The Guardian

As seen on ‘Living Wild; How to Change your Life’ a two-part prime-time series on Channel 4, Loose Women and The Great Celebrity Bake Off for SU2C

On the precipice of starting her adult life, aged eighteen, Sophie, a rebellious and incorrigible wild child, crashed her car and was instantly paralysed from the chest down. Rushed to hospital, everything she had dreamed for her life was instantly forgotten and her journey to rediscover herself and build a different life began. But being told she would never walk again would come to be the least of her concerns.

Over the next eighteen years, as she strived to come to terms with the change in her body, her relationships were put to the test; she has had to learn to cope with the many unexpected and unpredictable setbacks of living with paralysis; she has had to overcome her own and other people’s perceptions of disability and explore the limits of her abilities, all whilst searching for love, acceptance, meaning, identity, and purpose.

Driving Forwards is a remarkable and powerful memoir, detailing Sophie’s life-changing injury, her recovery, and her life since. Strikingly honest, her story is unusual and yet relatable, inspiring us to see how adversity can be channelled into opportunity and how ongoing resilience can ultimately lead to empowerment.

You may not think that washing your red and white clothes together would have repercussions, but that’s why this book is here; to make sure you never have to live that moment of terror when you discover your now pink wardrobe.
Here’s a heads-up of what you will find inside Adulting: Life Skills for Teens:

  • How Calm Whipped Up a Storm: How one small app won a ton of PR and buzz that helped it grow big – and how you can too

    01
This short book is for anyone who runs or markets an app – or other startup, scaleup or challenger brand – and wants to generate a ton of buzz, coverage and attention but without having a ton of money to do so.

With over 1.5 million new apps launched every year – over 4,000 a day – it’s never been harder to win attention by standing out in a noisy world; and never been more crucial to do so.

This book is at least two things: part case study and part how-to guide.

It’s a case study of how one small app, Calm used by won way more than its fair share of buzz and attention by using creative PR, guerrilla and viral marketing, that helped it grow big.

It’s also a guide to how you can do too by following Calm’s example and applying the author’s “10 Golden Rules of PR and Guerrilla Marketing.”

    You will learn why:

    • There are two kinds of PR – and you need to do both.
    • Silly PR is better than serious PR.
    • “These days only two things win attention: Celebrities and ‘Weird’.”
    • The best form of PR is content marketing – and the best form of content marketing is guerrilla content marketing.
    • One lightning bolt of attention is not enough; you need rolling thunder.

“Every app and startup should study
Peter’s 10 Golden Rules of PR and Guerrilla Marketing
and his advice on the secrets of creating a buzzy, talked-about brand.”
