A History of War Surgery
Since antiquity, war surgery has been a profession demanding a special kind of human: one able to face seemingly insurmountable problems; one able to keep a lucid mind and steady hands in extraordinary circumstances; one able to shoulder tremendous burdens; and one able to harden himself or herself, time and again, to failure and self-doubt. It is, and always has been, a harrowing business, and only for the brave. Dr John Wright charts the evolution of war surgery from ancient times to the present day, investigating its breakthroughs, its pitfalls, and the people and conflicts that have shaped it. But above all, this is a personal history, calling on the first-hand accounts of the surgeons, soldiers, medics, nurses, stretcher-bearers, and many others who have served in battle and come face-to-face with its most appalling horrors. This is not a book for the faint-hearted. It is one that searches for and delivers the truth about those who, with unerring skill, courage and determination, endeavour to undo the terrible damage we habitually inflict upon ourselves.Read more

Read more

We’re All Neurodiverse: How to Build a Neurodiversity-Affirming Future and Challenge Neuronormativity
“Neurodiversity has helped me understand myself and provided a sense of relief that I’m a whole neurodivergent person functioning as my brain intends.”
“It’s provided me with the language to advocate for myself.”
“I no longer hated myself. I no longer felt broken. I found a sense of community. A sense of belonging”
This affirming and thoughtful guide outlines how and why we need to fundamentally shift our thinking about neurodivergent people. We need to accept differences rather than framing them as a problem, abnormality or disorder. Welcome to the neurodiversity paradigm.
At times challenging and radical, Sonny Jane Wise explores the intersections of neurodivergence with disability, gender, sexuality and race. Through interviews, narratives, and the lens of their own raw experiences, they consider how current systems and structures that impact neurodivergent people are rooted in outdated capitalist and racist frameworks, and how these need to change and adapt to be neurodiversity affirming. Sonny Jane’s words are a rallying cry to challenge the pathology paradigm. They offer nine principles for facilitating change, reflected in deeply personal stories from the neurodivergent community.
Powerful and persuasive, this book is a clarion call for a kinder and more neurodiversity affirming society.

He had never planned to work in Public Transport, yet over thirty years Later, Alan Scriven MBE is still working ‘on the buses’. In that time, he has been a driver, a manager, an inspector… and worked at numerous depots across the Midlands, making firm friends and occasionally clashing heads with fellow drivers, and even the odd passenger or two! Alan has seen if not all, then quite a lot – and has many colourful stories as a result.
Next Stop Please is a great read for anyone who has worked in this industry, or been a passenger on a bus. There is certainly a lot going on behind the scenes!

Building the Cycling City: The Dutch Blueprint for Urban Vitality
In car-clogged urban areas across the world, the humble bicycle is enjoying a second life as a legitimate form of transportation. City officials are rediscovering it as a multi-pronged (or -spoked) solution to acute, 21st-century problems, including affordability, obesity, congestion, climate change, inequity, and social isolation. As the world’s foremost cycling nation, the Netherlands is the only country where the number of bikes exceeds the number of people, primarily because the Dutch have built a cycling culture accessible to everyone, regardless of age, ability, or economic means. Chris and Melissa Bruntlett share the incredible success of the Netherlands through engaging interviews with local experts and stories of their own delightful experiences riding in five Dutch cities. Building the Cycling City examines the triumphs and challenges of the Dutch while also presenting stories of North American cities already implementing lessons from across the Atlantic. Discover how Dutch cities inspired Atlanta to look at its transit-bike connection in a new way and showed Seattle how to teach its residents to realize the freedom of biking, along with other encouraging examples. Tellingly, the Dutch have two words for people who ride bikes: wielrenner (“wheel runner”) and fietser (“cyclist”), the latter making up the vast majority of people pedaling on their streets, and representing a far more accessible, casual, and inclusive style of urban cycling-walking with wheels. Outside of their borders, a significant cultural shift is needed to seamlessly integrate the bicycle into everyday life and create a whole world of fietsers. The Dutch blueprint focuses on how people in a particular place want to move.Read more

Public Transport: Its Planning, Management and Operation (Natural and Built Environment Series)
Public Transport provides an accessible introductory text to the field of public transport systems, covering bus, coach, rail, metro, domestic air and taxi modes. The market structure is set out, together with data collection methods. The technology of bus and rail systems is introduced with particular reference to peak capacity and energy consumption. An analysis of cost structures and costing methods leads into a review of pricing concepts and their application. In addition to issues related to urban systems, specific chapters cover rural public transport and the long-distance sector. A concluding chapter examines long-run policy issues, such as likely population changes and scope for substitution of travel. The primary context taken is that of the British Isles, drawing extensively on data such as the National Travel Survey in England. However, the principles and findings are also broadly applicable to countries of similar per capita income and population density.
This sixth edition introduces a new chapter on data collection and survey methods for public transport systems in addition to a general update of the text to reflect the latest statistical evidence, research findings and policy changes. Public Transport is an essential textbook for both students in transport and those in related fields. This is an invaluable resource for transport planners in local authorities and consultancies.

Malcolm Root’s Pageant of Transport
In this third book of paintings, Malcolm Root’s stunning pictures have been arranged to give a chronological pageant of the development of transport down the centuries, and in particular over the last one hundred years during which the greatest changes have taken place. This pictorial survey not only gives an accurate record of the changing nature of travel by land, sea and air, but each picture is also a detailed portrait of a particular scene, with the type of transport meticulously portrayed.
Malcolm Root was born in Colchester in 1950 and still lives in nearby Halstead. From an early age he combined his love of art with a fascination for all kinds of transport. On leaving school he entered the printing industry and in 1981 took the decision to become a full- time professional artist. Commissions followed, particularly for railway scenes and in 1983 he was elected a full member of the Guild of Railway Artists. Malcolm’s paintings have encompassed almost every form of transport from horse and cart and tram to Concorde and `le Shuttle’. They have also appeared in many forms including fine art prints, collectors’ plates, jigsaws, calendars and books.

Together with a host of smaller companies operating second-hand acquisitions, the Titans’ declining years between 1998 and 2003 are explored in this pictorial account that encompasses both standard day-to-day routes, emergency deployments and rail replacement services. A Practical Guide to Logistics: An Introduction to Transport, Warehousing, Trade and Distribution
Few people come into logistics management with knowledge and experience of all aspects of the profession. Some may have worked their way up from driving a vehicle but know little of warehouses, others may find themselves taking responsibility for logistics as part of a wider remit such as operations.
A Practical Guide to Logistics aims to equip them with the necessary knowledge to move on to the next stage, with simple non-technical explanations of the options available, and impartial advice on how to choose the right option for their business. It is also an excellent primer for students studying logistics for the first time, on BSc or MSc courses, as well as practitioners on professional training courses.
A Practical Guide to Logistics is a straightforward guide taking readers through all aspects of this fascinating industry, covering packaging, transportation, warehousing and exporting and importing of goods. There is a real need for this basic knowledge, both for practitioners starting out in the industry or more experienced practitioners who may have gaps in their knowledge. The book examines each aspect of logistics in turn and the text is supported by numerous illustrations.

The Beaten Track Volume 3: The Traction and Extremities of Britain’s Rail Network 1970-1985
The Beaten Track was first published in 2021. Its combination of outstanding colour photography from 1970–1985, featuring superseded motive power and long-lost extremities of the British railway network received widespread critical acclaim. Although originally intended to be a single volume, the success of The Beaten Track gave rise to a second volume, published in 2022, which continued in the same vein and received similar praise in reviews. We’re now proud to present The Beaten Track Volume 3 – a third selection of the best colour photography from 1970–1985. More than 250 high quality colour images illustrate an assortment of traction types, very few of which can still be seen on the main line, many at railway locations that have long since disappeared or have changed out of all recognition. All the photographs are accompanied by extensive captions, containing considerable historical and anecdotal information relating to the lines, stations and trains depicted. Hardback. Long Haul Pioneers, The: A Celebration of Astran: Leaders in Overland Transport to the Middle East for Over 40 Years
It all started in 1964 when two friends gave up promising medical careers to embark upon a journey which few hardened truckers would have considered. In so doing, they were solely responsible for creating the first long haul overland route, across Europe and deep into the Middle East to Kabul. The men had started the ‘Middle East Run’ was to become a phenomenon in the road haulage industry, an image which it still holds today. This book is about the company founded by one of those men, from its fledgling days as Asian Transport to the thriving Astran Cargo Services Ltd that it is today. In this book Ashley Coghill documents the complete history of the company to date with the focus predominantly on the early days when the men were fighting for something and revelling in the adventure. These early long haul drivers would think nothing of a 10,000 mile round trip to Iran or the Arabian Gulf and being stranded at 6,000 feet on a mountain pass with temperatures below -40 was just all in a day’s work. Ashley Coghill has an immense enthusiasm for his subject and has given his research total dedication. He has also tracked down past and present employees to gather first hand information which he has illustrated with over 300 carefully selected images. The end result is a detailed, comprehensive and fascinating account of an extraordinary company.Read more

Transport Operator Licensing: A Practical Guide for Goods and Passenger Operators
Transport Operator Licensing takes operators through the whole process of licensing, looking at when licences are required, giving advice on applying for such licences, describing the undertakings that form part of the application, the systems that should be put in place to stay within the undertakings, as well as illustrating what happens when difficulties arise and how to deal with them. Whilst there are books that cover this briefly, for example one chapter in the FTA year book, or online guides, there is nothing more comprehensive to help operators and applicants in this area. This book will plug the gap, as it will provide a tool which operators and those practising in the area can use to find out what is happening and how to deal with it.
Transport Operator Licensing is simply and clearly written, so that it can be easily followed by both operators and transport managers without any legal knowledge. There are multiple examples within the text to consolidate understanding of the topic. Appendices contain sample application forms with useful tips and advice on how to fill them in.

Buses: Another Life
What happens to old buses at the end of their career, when they are replaced by newer vehicles? Some inevitably go to scrap, especially if they have been cannibalised for spares. Some see further service with other bus companies. A few lucky ones pass directly into preservation. But many find further employment with so-called ‘Non-PSV’ users; some of these may continue to carry passengers, perhaps as works transport or for a community group. Some may be used for driver training. However, others will be converted to fulfil a whole variety of roles – catering or hospitality vehicles; advertising promotional vehicles; ambulances; mobile homes; playbuses; horseboxes; vehicle transporters, and more. This book looks at a variety of old buses and coaches and the varied roles they have fulfilled over the last fifty years.Read more

The Clapham Train Accident: Causes, Context and the Corporate Memory Challenge
Clapham was a pivotal point in British railway history. Much technology had been invented and applied to accident prevention by 1988; much more was to come. The Clapham Train Accident considers Clapham in its wider context, using official reports and expert interviews to describe both the causes and the terrible effects. It looks beyond the railway to the external factors acting not only on British Rail, but also the government of the time, and considers the safety improvements that came about as a result. Finally, the book brings the story up to date and looks at why the lessons learned over thirty years ago still need to be retained in an industry where the baton of safety is all-too-easily dropped during re-organisation, re-branding and after the departure of those who lived through darker days to make ours shine more brightly. The concatenation of events, the errors, the reorganisations, the financial constraints, that led to Clapham could happen to any business in any industry. On the morning of 12 December 1988, they happened to the railway. The Clapham Train Accident will act as a cautionary tale for safety practitioners old and new, not just in rail, but also other safety critical industries. It will help readers think actions through to all consequences, helping them too to make safer decisions, particularly when changing a system, technology or method of workingRead more

London Bus Routes One by One: 201-300 (Transport Systems Series)
Following on from London Bus Routes One By One: 1-100 and London Bus Routes One By One: 101-200, this third volume in the series explores what used to be the old London Transport’s highest-numbered block of routes. These numbers were once reserved for single-deck services, but the weight of post-war expansion soon filled in the sequence. As in previous volumes, a potted history of each route is accompanied by a list of points served and one or two pictures of the kind of bus that can be found in service today. The pace of tendering and Transport for London’s imperative towards emissions-free propulsion has meant increasingly rapid turnover of bus models, which are expected to last the length of two full-term contracts of seven years before replacement. Illustrated with over 190 color photographs, this volume represents an up-to-date snapshot of the fascinating modern London bus scene as it stands in autumn 2021.Read more

Antonov’s Heavy Transports: From the An-22 to An-225, 1965 to the Present
This book charts the development and service history of the Antonov design bureau’s heavy transport aircraft. In the late 1950s, the Antonov design bureau began developing the An-22 heavy military transport, intended to carry 50 tons. Powered by four 15,000 hp turboprops, it was the world’s heaviest transport when it first flew in February 1965. The four-turbofan An-124 was again the world’s most capable airlifter when it emerged in 1982, with a payload of 120 tons. It proved its worth in military and humanitarian operations and earned acclaim as a commercial freighter after 1991 for carrying heavy and outsized items. The unique six-engined An-225 “”Mriya”” was created for carrying the Buran space shuttle. Despite the demise of the Buran program, the aircraft found use on the heavy/outsized cargo transportation market. It is illustrated by a wealth of new photos and color artwork, as well as line drawings.-Read more

The German Pacific Locomotive: its Design and Development (Locomotive Portfolios)
The German Pacific Locomotive (Its Design and Development) is David Maidments fourth book in the series of Locomotive Profiles published by Pen & Sword. It is the first in the series to tackle an important range of overseas steam locomotives, the German pacific locomotives, which, with the Paris-Orleans pacific in France, were the first of that wheel layout in Europe and came to be the dominant type for express passenger work throughout Western Europe for the following fifty years, until displaced by diesel and electric traction. The German railways in the first two decades of the twentieth century were run principally as regional State railways, and two distinct styles of design developed, which were influenced by the natural terrain. In the south, in the mountainous foothills of the European Alps, four cylinder compound locomotives with comparatively small coupled wheels, most produced by the famous firm of Maffei in Munich, held sway from 1907 until the late 1930s, and in parts of Bavaria that were not yet electrified, even until the early 1960s. In the flatter lands of the north, Prussian 4-6-0s sufficed until Paul Wagners standard two cylinder simple pacifics came onto the scene in 1925, and were followed by the three cylinder streamlined pacifics at the start of the Second World War. After addressing the devastating damage to the German railways in the conflict, the book follows the modernisation of the locomotive fleet in the post-war period until the elimination of steam in both East and West Germany in the mid-late 1970s. The book describes the design, construction and operation of the full range of pacifics that ran in both parts of Germany, and the large numbers of these locomotives that have been preserved, and is illustrated with over 180 black and white and 80 colour photos.Read more

Eric Bottomley’s Transport Gallery: A Journey Across the Canvas
This is Eric Bottomley’s second art book, in which he has varied both his transport themes and the mediums in which he works. The majority of paintings are in oils but also included are gouache (watercolor) and pencil sketches. However, some paintings are both gouache and pencil, together known as mixed media.Railways have always been a great passion of Eric’s, from trainspotting around the ex-Lancashire & Yorkshire system as a boy, to painting commisions for customers both private and commercial. From his lowly studio in Wimborne, Dorset, where his painting career took off, Eric never envisaged that one day he would witness his paintings being presented to the Duke of Kent, or that he would meet the Duke of Gloucester (a fellow railway enthusiast). In 1979 he joined the Guild of Railway Artists, and later became a full member.Included in this book are all four regions of Britain’s railway, but mostly the BR period from 1948, to the end of steam in 1968. Added to this are such scenes as the Trans-Siberian Express in Moscow, The Golfers Express leaving Belfast and preserved diesels in the USA.The sad demise of steam and dereliction of the canals in the 1960s, and the amazing restoration projects over the years, has provided Eric with an enormous scope of subject matter, much of which is captured in this compelling book.Read more

Trucks and Trogs (Officers and Soldiers of the Royal Corps of Transport)
Trucks and TrogsThis is the fourth book Brian (Harry) Clacy has written specifically about the careers of officers and soldiers who have served in the ranks of the Royal Army Service Corps, Royal Corps of Transport and Royal Logistic Corps. Men who have supported the fighting elements of the British Army all over the world in places like Northern Ireland, Iraq, Belize, Canada, Cyprus, and British Army Of the Rhine (Germany). In my other books about RCT officers and soldiers (Rickshaws Camels and Taxis, Most Roads Led to 10 Regt, Soldiers On Wheels, Harry was a Crap Hat) I’ve included stories of at least a dozen of these men in each book. However, this book, ‘Trucks and Trogs’, includes the military careers of only three RCT Servicemen, Sergeant George Slough RCT, Colonel Paul Ash L/RCT and Driver Gus South RCT. They all served around the World in places like Northern Ireland, the Falkland Islands and Aldershot. George Slough did five tours of duty in Northern Ireland at North Howard Street Mill and Macrory Park on the Falls Road in Belfast; he served the majority of his tours with 9 Sqn RCT. One of his early tours involved him driving a Saracen Armoured Ambulance which he had to use as a battering ram to get to a Wessex Helicopters’ Landing Zone in Belfast. Only a few RCT Officers served on land during the Falklands War and 2nd Lt Paul Ash was one of them. He went on to become a Full Colonel and was the Senior Officer when 17 Port and Maritime Regiment RCT landed the supplies needed for the invasion of Iraq, he was one of the Most Senior Operational Logistic British Officers on the ground during the war in Iraq.Gus South was a ‘CH47 Helicopter Hooker’ during his time in the Corps, he served in the South Atlantic, nearly became an alcoholic whilst serving out in Belize, before being Courts Martialled in Northern Ireland and ‘Busted’ from Sgt back down to Driver.Read more

British Transport Police: A definitive history of the early years and subsequent development
This book traces the history of the British Transport Police, the National Police Force responsible for policing the railways of England, Scotland and Wales. The roots of the Force go back almost 200 years, starting with the development of the railways during the Nineteenth Century. Hundreds of railway companies were founded and although mergers and amalgamations took place, by the end of the century, well over 100 railway companies were operating, most of which employed railway policemen. The first railway policemen were recruited to work on the Stockton and Darlington Railway in 1826. Other railway companies quickly followed and by the 1850s, railway policemen with their smart uniforms and top hats were a common sight on Britain’s railways. During the Twentieth Century, railway companies continued to merge before being nationalised in 1948. The following year, the British Transport Commission (BTC) was created to oversee not only the newly nationalised railway network, but also the nation’s docks, shipping, inland waterways, road transport, road haulage and other companies. Also in 1949, the British Transport Commission Police (BTC Police) was created to take over the policing of these newly nationalised institutions. All the former railway, dock and canal police forces were then absorbed into the new BTC Police Force. The BTC was abolished in 1962, having incurred serious financial losses. The BTC Police was renamed the British Transport Police in 1963 and has continued to operate ever since. It no longer polices the docks, harbours and canals for reasons outlined in this book.Read more

You Call, We Haul: The Life and Times of Bob Carter (Old Pond Books) Inspirational Story of the Founder of Haulage Company, Trans UK; Explore British Transport in the Heyday of…
Best known for founding international haulier Trans UK, Bob Carter was involved in the groundbreaking changes occurring in British transport of the ’60s and ’70s. Beginning in the army, where he witnessed nuclear testing on Christmas Island in the 1950s, Carter went on to be a driver, office worker, and, finally, company owner.
Never afraid to get his hands dirty, Bob was able to turn his hand to any aspect of his business operation, from repairing mechanical defects to operating forklifts and driving his own trucks. In 1975, he set out on Trans UK’s maiden run to Iran in his Humber Sceptre with four of his trucks in convoy—the first trip of many for the company.
The denationalization of BRS and the implementation of the ‘O’ licence, the rapid growth of privately owned haulage companies, combined with the Middle East oil boom of the ’70s, all helped Bob to develop a successful British and international transport operation.
Including nearly 300 previously unpublished photos, You Call, We Haul is an inspirational story which will appeal to those with an interest in the heyday of Middle East travel, and those with a general love of great British transport companies.

A Royal Navy Cold War Buccaneer Pilot: Flying the Famous Maritime Strike Aircraft
This is a vivid and powerful story of life on board the last of our great Second World War-era aircraft carriers, modernized to serve beyond their time. It is a story of the Cold War which conveys the trials and tribulations of flying one of the best-loved military aircraft in history.Steve Kershaw joined the Royal Navy in 1963. He began flying training in 1968 and progressed to the Blackburn Buccaneer – a world-class naval strike jet that was designed to fly very fast at ultra-low altitudes. In 1970, Steve joined 800 Naval Air Squadron, which embarked on HMS Eagle on its epic final cruise.
The voyage to the Far East was far from trouble-free – an aircraft crashed into the sea, there was a devastating explosion on board the carrier, and then two sailors were arrested for murder in Auckland. New year 1972 saw HMS Eagle decommissioned and 800 NAS disbanded.
Steve was transferred to 845 Naval Air Squadron, on which he flew Wessex helicopters. Embarked on HMS Hermes, the squadron supported Royal Marines Commandos during their deployment to the mountains of Norway under NATO plans for a European war. During this time, helicopters were strangely sabotaged on board and one of them crashed into a fjord at night.
By 1974, HMS Ark Royal was the last remaining Royal Navy fixed-wing aircraft carrier to which Steve returned to fly Buccaneers on 809 Squadron. It was in this period that he participated in a NATO exercise in Norway and a Mediterranean cruise.
On return, the squadron prepared for a bombing competition between the RAF and Royal Navy Buccaneers. As part of this, Steve flew a low-level sortie off the Lincolnshire coast. The light was fading, and he was struggling to see the target ahead. He failed to see they were losing height. The aircraft hit the sea. Steve and his observer, David, were ejected into the water.
In this book, Steve’s story is revealed by his son, Simon, through the words of his father, drawn from a mass of letters sent by him, and the recollections of those who served alongside him.

British Buses Since 1950: Trendsetting Designs (Britain’s Buses Series)
Bus design has certainly evolved in the seven decades since 1950, but it has not been a steady process. Advances in bus design have caused manufacturers to rush back to the drawing board for fear of being left behind. In 1950, the first of the new breed of underfloor-engined single-deckers appeared, and, just six years later, came the first rear-engined double-decker. Buses got longer, and one result in the 1960s was a rash of new rear-engined single-deck models. Efforts to make buses accessible for all passengers led to low-floor models in the 1990s, and then, in the 2000s, concerns about the environment prompted diesel-electric hybrid, gas, electric and hydrogen buses. Covering the designs that led the way with varying degrees of success over the past 70 years, and illustrated with over 170 colour images and period advertisements, this book showcases the good, the bad and the ugly of British bus design.Read more

From Moorlands to Highlands: A History of Harris and Miners and Brian Harris Transport (Old Pond Books) History of the Red, Green, and Yellow Trucks … of Harris & Miners and…
This book follows the history and development of Brian Harris Transport Limited, the original red, green, and yellow liveried lorries that made the trek between Devon and Scotland at regular intervals for over fifty years. In 1946, Brian’s father, Jerry, and Sam Miners formed Harris & Miners; with their fleet of two Ford trucks and one Commertipper, these two men took on the ultimate haulage challenge of the time: road vs. train. The outcome was that Harris & Miners were offered a contract to haul ‘Devon Grate’ Candy fire surrounds to Glasgow in 1947. Young Brian Harris began driving for his father in an Albion Chieftain in 1960. When Jerry Harris passed, Brian bought out the Miners family and the company became Brian Harris Transport Limited. With his fleet of ERF lorries fitted with Gardner engines, Brian set about running the company in a way only understood by him. Over the course of its existence, the company utilized a vast quantity of magnificent machines, including the first ERF ‘A’ series in that area, the Leyland Roadtrain and one Leyland DAF. Brian Harris died in April 2012 and his funeral was attended by over 600 people from all over the UK. This new edition gives an update to the events that have taken place since the second edition was published in 2007, including the eulogy given by the author at the funeral, as well as 82 previously unpublished photographs.
