  • The Elements of Nursing: A Model for Nursing Based on a Model of Living

This third edition is essentially for begining nursing students. It is not a comprehensive text in the sense of covering all aspects of nursing knowledge and practice required in the course of a basic education programme; rather, it encourages a logical mode of thinking about nursing in the framework of a model for nursing. The presentation of the book itself has been rearranged and its content substantially revised and updated. Section one has been changed. Its introductory chapter emphasizes the link between nursing and health – a point which is stressed increasingly by the World Health Organization. The content of the second chapter is new. It includes a discussion, albeit brief, of some of the other internationally well-known models for nursing, in order to provide an understanding of the context in which the Roper, Logan and Tierney model can be considered. Section 2 has been considerably altered; the objective here being to present this model more clearly, incorporating some of the refinements which have been made since the last edition. It commences with a chronological account of the background to the model showing how it developed from research. Subsequently, the model of living and the model for nursing are discussed sequentially. In the previous editions they were separated by three brief chapters introducing some concepts about biology, psychology and sociology. This may have been more appropriate when the first edition was published, but increasingly nursing students are expected to study the biological and social sciences as foundation subjects, so these three chapters have been omitted. Instead the third edition emphazises more than previously, the application of such knowledge in the context of “factors affecting the ALs”, a component of the model Section 3, as before, consists of 12 chapters, one devoted to each of the 12 `Activities of Living’, the main component of the model. All of these chapters have been extensively revised, obviously to update the content but also to reflect the five components of the model more clearly than in the second edition. The first half of each chapter discusses the nature of AL, mainly in the context of healthy living; the second half provides selected examples of the problems related to the ALs which can be caused by illness.

  • World War I: An Enthralling Guide from Beginning to End (Military History)

    05
World War I is infamous for revolutionizing modern warfare as we know it.

It is well known that World War I was kicked off by the assassination of Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand. The world superpowers engaged in the bloodiest conflict in history at that time, with millions of casualties on either side. World War I transformed the socio-political landscape of the early 20th century and shaped the lives of countless people for decades to come.

However, there is much more to World War I than Franz Ferdinand’s assassination and the clash of the Entente and Central Powers. It was a conflict deeply rooted in hateful rivalries of the world’s most powerful states and came as a somewhat logical conclusion to the endless balancing and political maneuvering of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. And it would change the course of history forever.

This book will dive into the Great War, exploring what caused it, how it unfolded, and it’s short- and long-term consequences. Here are some of the things you will learn about in this book:

    • The long nineteenth century and how it affected the political landscape
    • Germany and Italy’s unification
    • The state of European power politics
    • New technological advancements that shaped the war
    • The Austro-Hungarian problem and the start of WWI
    • Military activities in all theaters of the war
    • The influential battles of Verdun, the Somme, Isonzo, and Gallipoli
    • Trench warfare and new tactics used in the war
    • The entry of the United States and the Russian Revolution
    • The final moments of the war
    • The Paris Peace Conference and the new world order

Just as his dreams were being realised, Michael was shattered when he and Riverdance parted company. Now Michael explains whas really happened backstage and describes how he went on to create the enormously successful Lord of the Dance.

  • Sea Monsters: Prehistoric Predators of the Deep

    08
In prehistoric times there existed creatures bigger and often fiercer than dinosaurs, whose exploits have inspired more terrifying legends than any other group of animals. Their watery home has kept them hidden from view – until now. Following on from “Walking with Dinosaurs” and “Walking with Beasts”, “Sea Monsters” once again recreates the prehistoric world, giving us an insight into the underwater environment of that time and the strange and fascinating creatures that dwelt there. The leading wildlife television presenter, Nigel Marven, explores their world through a series of “encounters”, where he dives deep into the past and swims with these extraordinary reptiles and mammals. From the fearsome hunter, Liopleurodon, one of the biggest predators that ever existed, to Megalograptus, the most vicious of the spiny sea scorpions, the deadly prehistoric seas are vividly brought to life as we see these creatures through Nigel’s eyes. Some of the ancestors of these predators exist today, but even the great white shark and blue whale cannot come close in threat and size to these prehistoric species. Illustrated boxes describe the latest scientific evidence that led to the reconstruction of these creatures, with details of the modern sites, from New York to Egypt, where water once covered the land.

  • The Sale of the Late King’s Goods: Charles I and his Art Collection

    08

`So wonderful and glorious a collection, that the like will never again be met with.’ This is how one awed and wistful observer described King Charles’ artworks. As an acquirer of paintings by Europe’s great masters and patron of Rubens and Van Dyck, Charles’s extravagance in amassing his collection only exacerbated the parliamentary disapproval that led to civil war and the King’s own execution. After his death, one of the Commonwealth’s first decrees was to sell off his treasures to raise money for the new regime. After the Restoration, one of Charles II’s first resolutions was to get the collection back.

Jerry Brotton tells the remarkable story of the king and his pictures: their acquisition, dispersal and eventual recovery. He reveals a world in which diplomats doubled as art dealers, and in which the king’s plumber could be temporary owner of Bassano’s The Flood. This is a vivid portrait of a tragic king and his decadent court, set against the backdrop of political conflict and civil war, which also offers a new and compelling perspective on art and the evolution of collecting in England.

  • Legal London: A Pictorial History

London has been home to more lawyers, for more centuries, than any other city on earth. Paris ran it neck-and-neck until the 18th century, after which London romped away as the national and then imperial capital of a legal system with centralized Royal Courts of Justice, Inns of Court, Courts of Appeal, debtors prisons, the Old Bailey, the Archbishop’s Court at St Mary le Bow, the Bridewell, the notorious Fleet Prison, and the Metropolitan Police. No other city so celebrates, in surviving buildings and institutions, the work of judges, lawyers, litigants, criminals, and the police! This new book does justice to them all. Covering both civil and criminal aspects of the law, the author’s narrative account is enormously expanded by 200 photographs and engravings, each fully captioned; plus maps to show the location of the courts, Inns, prisons, and other places of punishment throughout the metropolis. This fascinating study of the law at work in days gone by is both entertaining and informative. Though of particular value to everyone interested in London history, it will appeal to members of the legal and law enforcement professions everywhere that the “English” system and tradition has left its mark.

  • The Justice Gap: Whatever Happened to Legal Aid?

On 30 July 1949, the Legal Aid and Advice Act was granted royal assent with the intention of ensuring that anyone who needed legal advice would be able to access it. In this timely book the authors describe the origins and history of legal aid as well as New Labour’s attempts to reform the system years on. They argue that on its 60th anniversary legal aid has fallen short of its original aims. There exists a marked difference between the numbers of cases pursued to enforce rights and the many potential cases that people never take up as they are either not aware of their rights or they decide it is not worth the trouble to take it further – this is ‘the justice gap’. Though UK legal aid is arguably the best funded in the world the authors illustrate that the public are not being well served by the current system which has emerged from the recent reforms. They clearly articulate the necessary, essential reforms to bridge the justice gap that has been created and also to bring into reality the intentions of the original Act. This title will be of great interest to all legal aid practitioners and commentators and an essential purchase for policy-makers and students across the legal and social policy sectors.
