• Questioning Islam: Tough Questions & Honest Answers About the Muslim Religion

    02
Many questions are currently being asked about the place of Islam in the modern world. Among these questions the most important one of all sometimes gets lost: Is Islam true? With his new book author Peter Townsend invites you to accompany him on a journey through the foundational texts of the Muslim religion. In the process the truth-claims of Islam will be respectfully, honestly and impartially evaluated. Along the way the following questions will be asked: • Can the traditional Islamic historical accounts be trusted? • Is the Qur’an a ‘Perfect Book, Perfectly Preserved’? • Was Muhammad indeed a ‘Beautiful Pattern of Conduct’? The answers to these questions will not be sought from modern commentaries on Islam. Instead Questioning Islam goes straight to the classic sources of Islam namely the Qur’an, hadiths (traditions) and biographies of Muhammad. Questioning Islam is not an attempt to promote any other belief system or ideology. Its focus is simply on asking the hard questions about Islam that are all too often ignored or swept under the carpet. Simply put, if you have ever wondered whether the truth-claims of Islam can withstand critical scrutiny then this book is for you!

  • Computational Thinking (The MIT Press Essential Knowledge series)

    02
An introduction to computational thinking that traces a genealogy beginning centuries before the digital computer.

A few decades into the digital era, scientists discovered that thinking in terms of computation made possible an entirely new way of organizing scientific investigation; eventually, every field had a computational branch: computational physics, computational biology, computational sociology. More recently, “computational thinking” has become part of the K–12 curriculum. But what is computational thinking? This volume in the MIT Press Essential Knowledge series offers an accessible overview, tracing a genealogy that begins centuries before digital computers and portraying computational thinking as pioneers of computing have described it.

The authors explain that computational thinking (CT) is not a set of concepts for programming; it is a way of thinking that is honed through practice: the mental skills for designing computations to do jobs for us, and for explaining and interpreting the world as a complex of information processes. Mathematically trained experts (known as “computers”) who performed complex calculations as teams engaged in CT long before electronic computers. The authors identify six dimensions of today’s highly developed CT—methods, machines, computing education, software engineering, computational science, and design—and cover each in a chapter. Along the way, they debunk inflated claims for CT and computation while making clear the power of CT in all its complexity and multiplicity.

  • Computing with Quantum Cats: From Alan Turing to Teleportation: From Colossus to Qubits

    08
Pioneering study of the science behind quantum computing and what the new quantum reality will mean for mankind.
The quantum computer is no longer the stuff of science fiction. Pioneering physicists are on the brink of unlocking a new quantum universe which provides a better representation of reality than our everyday experiences and common sense ever could. The birth of quantum computers — which, like Schrödinger’s famous ‘dead and alive’ cat, rely on entities like electrons, photons or atoms existing in two states at the same time — is set to turn the computing world on its head.
In his fascinating study of this cutting-edge technology, John Gribbin updates his previous views on the nature of quantum reality, arguing for a universe of many parallel worlds where ‘everything is real’. Looking back to Alan Turing’s work on the Enigma machine and the first electronic computer, Gribbin explains how quantum theory developed to make quantum computers work in practice as well as in principle. He takes us beyond the arena of theoretical physics to explore their practical applications — from machines which learn through ‘intuition’ and trial and error to unhackable laptops and smartphones. And he investigates the potential for this extraordinary science to create a world where communication occurs faster than light and teleportation is possible.

  • Understanding Your ZX81 ROM (28) (Retro Reproductions)

Launched in 1981, Sir Clive Sinclair’s ZX81 – successor to his ZX80 released the year before – was designed to be a low-cost introduction to home computing for the general public. It was a hugely successful machine, with over one and a half million ‘official’ units being sold; many more unauthorised ‘clones’ were also produced, particularly in Russia and other Eastern Bloc countries of the era. One could either purchase the machine pre-built, or – as a significant number of consumers did – buy it in kit form for assembly at home at a slightly cheaper price. This ‘DIY’ approach, encouraged by Sinclair Research, became a core element of the computer’s genetic make-up. Those who were comfortable putting together the four silicon chips and other such components were just as keen to poke around the machine’s memory, learning as much as they could about its capability; the programs they would write could easily be shared once saved onto a standard audio cassette.

This book helps the reader truly understand how the ZX81 works, with sections covering everything from the structure of the Z80 microprocessor used in the machine to the computer’s registers, ALU and more.

With an introduction to both binary and hex, Understanding Your ZX81 ROM helped many people get the most out of their machine in the very earliest days of home computing.

  • Technical Analysis for Beginners: Candlestick Trading, Charting, and Technical Analysis to Make Money with Financial Markets Zero Trading Experience Required (Day Trading Book 3)

    01
If you are a technical analyst, you know how useful it is to predict the future. Based on a collection of indicators and other technical techniques, technical analysts can see what the market will do by predicting how stocks are likely to move in the future. When you read this book, you will find some common patterns seen in charts that can help you predict where a stock might go next.
Are you interest? Keep reading to know more!

Technical analysis is one of the quickest ways for an investor in stocks or futures to make money. Investors must become more educated on this type of investment strategy and use them effectively to their advantage.
Since the 1940s, technical analysis has been used to predict future stock prices of stocks and commodities. It is also used in the futures markets to help traders decide which instruments and futures contracts they wish to buy or sell.
For technical analysis to be successful, the investor must observe certain patterns in a chart of a stock or commodity.

Once these patterns are seen, an investor can use them as indicators for making future predictions about where that specific asset might go. Traders often develop their indicators so that they can track the price movements of their stock more accurately. They may even develop special software programs designed for this purpose.

There are many different types of trading strategies that an investor can use. One of the most common is technical trading, which involves using indicators to help predict future price movements. This type of strategy aims to use the wealth gained from the sale of a stock or commodity.

    This book covers:

    • What Is Technical Analysis
    • Basic Concept of Trend
    • Recognizing Breakout
    • The 4 Types of Indicators You Need to Know
    • Continuation Patterns
    • Reversal Patterns
    • 24 Candlestick Patterns That Every Trader Should Know
    • Avoid the Traps
    • Trading Psychology

    And much more!

To become successful in technical analysis, you will need some knowledge about the market itself. You should be able to recognize which patterns are likely to persist and which patterns might be short-lived or seasonal. It would be best if you looked at a chart as often as possible so that you can recognize patterns as they appear.

Remember that there is no need to become an expert in technical analysis. The primary purpose is to show where specific patterns can be seen and how they can be used as indicators for future predictions. You can use this information to improve your skills and, as a result, increase your chances for success in technical trading.

  • Napoleon’s Cavalry, Artillery and Technical Corps 1799–1815: History, Organization and Equipment

    01
The French Army of Napoleon could count on a brilliant mounted arm, consisting of three main types of cavalry: heavy, medium and light. The first, consisting of carabiniers and cuirassiers, was tasked with conducting frontal charges; the second, consisting of dragoons and lancers, could perform a variety of different duties; the third, consisting of hussars and mounted chasseurs, was tasked with scouting and skirmishing. The various regiments were all dressed in flamboyant uniforms and distinctive equipment. Perhaps more than any other troops they encapsulated the dash and glamour of Napoleonic warfare.

Napoleon started his military career as an artillery officer and thus always paid great attention to the quality of his army’s artillery, which consisted of both foot and horse units. Several of Bonaparte’s greatest victories were achieved thanks to the superiority of his artillery, which was with undoubtedly the best in Europe during the period 1799-1815. In addition to cavalry and artillery, the author also covers the minor ‘technical corps’ of Napoleon’s army, such as the engineers and supply train. All are beautifully illustrated by the many color plates in this book, and their organization, equipment and tactics described.

  • Long Haul Pioneers, The: A Celebration of Astran: Leaders in Overland Transport to the Middle East for Over 40 Years

    08
It all started in 1964 when two friends gave up promising medical careers to embark upon a journey which few hardened truckers would have considered. In so doing, they were solely responsible for creating the first long haul overland route, across Europe and deep into the Middle East to Kabul. The men had started the ‘Middle East Run’ was to become a phenomenon in the road haulage industry, an image which it still holds today. This book is about the company founded by one of those men, from its fledgling days as Asian Transport to the thriving Astran Cargo Services Ltd that it is today. In this book Ashley Coghill documents the complete history of the company to date with the focus predominantly on the early days when the men were fighting for something and revelling in the adventure. These early long haul drivers would think nothing of a 10,000 mile round trip to Iran or the Arabian Gulf and being stranded at 6,000 feet on a mountain pass with temperatures below -40 was just all in a day’s work. Ashley Coghill has an immense enthusiasm for his subject and has given his research total dedication. He has also tracked down past and present employees to gather first hand information which he has illustrated with over 300 carefully selected images. The end result is a detailed, comprehensive and fascinating account of an extraordinary company.

  • The London DMS

    08
Vilified as the great failure of all London Transport bus classes, the DMS family of Daimler Fleetline was more like an unlucky victim of straitened times. Desperate to match staff shortages with falling demand for its services during the late 1960s, London Transport was just one organization to see nationwide possibilities and savings in legislation that was about to permit double-deck one-man-operation and partially fund purpose-built vehicles. However, prohibited by circumstances from developing its own rear-engined Routemaster (FRM) concept, LT instituted comparative trials between contemporary Leyland Atlanteans and Daimler Fleetlines. The latter came out on top, and massive orders followed. The first DMSs entering service on 2 January 1971.In service, however, problems quickly manifested. Sophisticated safety features served only to burn out gearboxes and gulp fuel. The passengers, meanwhile, did not appreciate being funnelled through the DMS’s recalcitrant automatic fare-collection machinery only to have to stand for lack of seating. Boarding speeds thus slowed to a crawl, to the extent that the savings made by laying off conductors had to be negated by adding more DMSs to converted routes!Second thoughts caused the ongoing order to be amended to include crew-operated Fleetlines (DMs), noise concerns prompted the development of the B20 quiet bus variety, and brave attempts were made to fit the buses into the time-honored system of overhauling at Aldenham Works, but finally the problems proved too much. After enormous expenditure, the first DMSs began to be withdrawn before the final RTs came out of service, and between 1979 and 1983 all but the B20s were sold as is widely known, the DMSs proved perfectly adequate with provincial operators once their London features had been removed.OPO was to become fashionable again in the 1980s as the politicians turned on London Transport itself, breaking it into pieces in order to sell it off. Not only did the B20 DMSs survive to something approaching a normal lifespan, but the new cheap operators awakening with the onset of tendering made use of the type to undercut LT, and it was not until 1993 that the last DMS operated.

Ingrained in our culture since the late eighteenth century we are now guilty of taking transport for granted. It has opened our eyes to new cultures and provided a free flow of goods and people all around the world. Certainly without transport we could not indulge in our collective passion for travel.
This collection of poetry and short stories is a wonderful celebration of all things travel and transport related.

  • Merseyside Transport: The 1950s–1970s (Transport System Series Book 1)

Merseyside can claim, with some justification, to have provided the transport enthusiast with a greater variety of transport modes than anywhere else in Britain. By the 1950s, with many long-standing scenes about to disappear, photographers began faithfully to record what they saw in color. It is these images, including road, rail, sea and other modes of transport, that illustrate this nostalgic pictorial portrait of key aspects of the richly varied scene. Taking the reader on a journey from Liverpool and its suburbs to Birkenhead and Wallasey, with one small detour to include views of the remarkable Runcorn Transporter Bridge, this book gives a full-color view of the historic transport that was part of the Merseyside townscape from the 1950s to the 1970s.

  • London Transport’s Last Buses: Leyland Olympian L1-263

    08
The Olympian was Leyland’s answer to the competition that was threatening to take custom away from its second-generation OMO double-deck products. Simpler than the London Transportcentric Titan but, unlike that integral model, able to respond to the market by being offered as a chassis for bodying by the bodybuilder of the customer’s choice, the Olympian was an immediate success and soon replaced both the Atlantean and Bristol VRT as the standard double-decker of the NBC. It wasn’t until 1984 that London Transport itself dabbled with the model, taking three for evaluation alongside trios of contemporary double-deckers.The resulting L class spawned an order for 260 more in 1986, featuring accessibility advancements developed by LT in concert with the Ogle design consultancy, but the rapid changes engulfing the organisation meant that no more were ordered. During the 1990s company ownerships shifted repeatedly as the ethos of competition gave way to the cold reality of big business, an unstable situation which even saw London’s bus operations broken up.The L class was split between three new companies, but the backlog of older vehicles to replace once corporate interests released funding ensured the buses up to a further decade in service. Finally, as low-floor buses swept into the capital at the turn of the century, Olympian operation at last declined, and the final examples operated early in 2006.This profusely illustrated book describes the diversity of liveries, ownerships and deployments that characterised the London Leyland Olympians’ two decades of service.

  • Little London Transport: Network SouthEast 30th Anniversary Special Edition: Volume 1

    03
A collaborative photographic history in model form with a little type and model history added too. This originally started as a project to create a photo book of my model Bus and Railway collection. I then started to seek help from some other model photographers on the photo sharing website Flickr. Before I knew it we had more people on board and an extensive collection was starting to build including some rare types and starting to detail the history of these vehicles types in model form. This is the first book in the series, soon to follow are further editions detailing London’s Buses, Trains, Trams, Trolleybuses and Tubes. As Network SouthEast has always been one of my favourite railway operators I thought I would release a special NSE edition first to celebrate 30 years since it’s inception. NSE was created when I was a small child and the trains were noticeably much more brighter than the grey and blue units that came before and became an obvious choice when I started a model railway a few years ago (to be detailed further in a later book). NSE really was something very different from what had gone before with bright colours of its trains, red all over it’s stations and a real effort to improve its trains and services thanks to the idea created and implemented by Chris Green. This book contains over 90 colour photos with a description displaying Network SouthEast models in a realistic scene with a little history info too. Release history Version 1.0 – 11th October 2016 Version 1.1 – 13th October 2016 Small amendment to details of Dapol and Heljan Class 86 Version 1.2 – 17th October 2016 A further photo of 47401 with a rake of NSE coaches added Version 1.3 – 21st November 2016 13 photos added by Andy Carter and a further 5 photos added by Jonathan Francis

  • Lawyer’s Latin: A Vade-Mecum

    08
Updated and expanded, this invaluable reference book was originally written as an aid for those disadvantaged by the deteriorating standing of Latin in our education system and by its use as legal terminology. Professional and comprehensive, yet lighthearted, it is immensely readable and has assumed a readership far beyond the lawyers for whom it was primarily designed to assist. All those interested in or curious about Latin may like to dip in to discover such particularly succinct phrases as uberrimae fidei (of the utmost [good] faith), in tenebris (in the dark), doli capax (capable, legally, of wrong or fraud) or mala fide (in bad faith). Few learn Latin in school and young lawyers with minimal knowledge of the language will experience considerable difficulty as they continue to meet it, particularly in old reported cases, academic articles, statutes and in decisions of EC institutions and even falling from the lips of renegade judges. When Latin brings progress and comprehension to a halt, what then? Reach for “Lawyers’ Latin”.
