Rats: The Essential Guide to Ownership, Care, & Training for Your Pet
What pet can play fetch, learn its name, and still ride around in your pocket? It’s a rat, of course, and if you’re surprised by this, you should take some time to learn more about these delightful animals. Though wild rats have earned a bad rap for spreading illness and disease, domestic rats are clean and friendly animals that can be loving and wonderful additions to any family. If you have children that want pets but you’re not ready for a dog, a pet rat may be a great compromise. These little critters are fabulous pets for kids, requiring relatively simple care that even grade school children can understand and handle. They’re adaptable, affectionate, and tons of fun to watch and play with. With a life-span up to 5 years, your child can have a long relationship with her animals. Rats make great adult companions too, of course. Their minimal space requirements make them ideal for apartment dwellers, and their self-sufficiency and flexible sleeping habits mean they’ll adapt readily to even busy schedules. When they’re cared for properly, rats aren’t prone to many illnesses or health issues, and they’re affordable both up-front and in the long-term. Most of the challenges in rat care are caused by the animal’s remarkable intelligence. The information in this book will teach you how to properly house these notorious escape artists. You’ll also learn about the proper nutrition and care to keep your rats healthy in the long term, and how to identify and fix problems if they do come up. Introductions to breeding, showing, and training your animals are also included, if you want to take your rat ownership to the next level. Cuddly, smart, and entertaining, a pet rat combines the low time commitment of a small animal with the affection of a dog—and you may just find it’s the perfect pet for you.Read more

The Elements of Nursing: A Model for Nursing Based on a Model of Living
This third edition is essentially for begining nursing students. It is not a comprehensive text in the sense of covering all aspects of nursing knowledge and practice required in the course of a basic education programme; rather, it encourages a logical mode of thinking about nursing in the framework of a model for nursing. The presentation of the book itself has been rearranged and its content substantially revised and updated. Section one has been changed. Its introductory chapter emphasizes the link between nursing and health – a point which is stressed increasingly by the World Health Organization. The content of the second chapter is new. It includes a discussion, albeit brief, of some of the other internationally well-known models for nursing, in order to provide an understanding of the context in which the Roper, Logan and Tierney model can be considered. Section 2 has been considerably altered; the objective here being to present this model more clearly, incorporating some of the refinements which have been made since the last edition. It commences with a chronological account of the background to the model showing how it developed from research. Subsequently, the model of living and the model for nursing are discussed sequentially. In the previous editions they were separated by three brief chapters introducing some concepts about biology, psychology and sociology. This may have been more appropriate when the first edition was published, but increasingly nursing students are expected to study the biological and social sciences as foundation subjects, so these three chapters have been omitted. Instead the third edition emphazises more than previously, the application of such knowledge in the context of “factors affecting the ALs”, a component of the model Section 3, as before, consists of 12 chapters, one devoted to each of the 12 `Activities of Living’, the main component of the model. All of these chapters have been extensively revised, obviously to update the content but also to reflect the five components of the model more clearly than in the second edition. The first half of each chapter discusses the nature of AL, mainly in the context of healthy living; the second half provides selected examples of the problems related to the ALs which can be caused by illness.Read more

Nursing in Prison
This Textbook addresses a gap in the market, as currently there are no contemporary books exploring nursing within a prison setting. The main focus is the provision of healthcare in the Prison Service of England and Wales, although examples will also be drawn from the United States of America and Australia. Healthcare within prison settings has changed remarkably to address the needs of the changing prison populations. Thus, this text is clearly structured to support student nurses to understand the role of the nurse within prison and how the different specialities of nursing are applied in this unique setting. This textbook provides an overview of the context of prison, prisoners, and healthcare, as well as the experiences of nurse specialists who work in this field, including adult, mental health, and learning disability nurses across primary care, mental health services, substance misuse and end-of-life care.
This volume is informative for both undergraduate student nurses and for qualified nurses and dispels many myths regarding working as a nurse in a prison. Each chapter is written by experts within the field, including nurses who have worked or still working within the prison setting. An important objective of this work is to inform student nurses of the possibility and opportunity of a nursing career within a prison setting.

•Do you know off the top of your head when you should be concerned about a patient’s mole?
If you remember the mnemonic ABCDE, then it will be easy! •A = Asymmetry• B = Border irregular• C = Color irregular• D = Diameter usually greater than 0.5 cm• E = Elevation irregularWhat if you are looking at an x-ray and notice something weird that shouldn’t be there.
If you see HOLES in the chest, that is WEIRD. What are the possible differentials?•W = Wegner’s syndrome•E = Embolic (pulmonary, septic)•I = Infection (anaerobes, pneumocystis, TB)•R = Rheumatoid (Necrobiotic nodules)•D = Developmental cysts (sequestration)•H = Histiocytosis•O = Oncological•L = Lymphangeioleiomyomatosis•E = Environmental/ occupational•S = Sarcoid.
Like in these examples, mnemonics are a proven way to help you recall specific information, including detailed information such as differentials, symptoms, diagnostics, and even steps in a procedure. Throughout this book, you will find hundreds of mnemonics, many of which have been used for years by health care professionals to help them recall vital information. Once you see how the mnemonics work, you can pick and choose the ones that work for you, or you can even use the information in this book to create your own mnemonics that are easy for you to remember.
Mnemonics can also come in handy on the NCLEX. Here is a question that is typical for this exam:
A patient comes to the clinic complaining of severe gastrointestinal distress. Which abdominal physical assessment step does the nurse do first?
a.Inspection b.Palpation c.Percussion d.Auscultation.
If you remember your mnemonic tricks, then this question will be easy. Remember the mnemonic “I Am a People Person,” and you will instantly know that the answer is “A, inspection.”
•I = Inspection•A = Auscultation•P = Percussion•P = Palpation.
Please don’t wait until you are studying for exams, pick up this book, and use it throughout your studies so that the mnemonics used will become second nature to you and propel you towards your nursing career.
