  • Advertising and the Mind of the Consumer: What works, what doesn’t and why

By the time we die, we will have spent an estimated one and a half years just watching TV commercials. Advertising is an established and ever-present force and yet, as we move into the new century, just how it works continues to be something of a mystery.

In this 3rd international edition of Advertising and the Mind of the Consumer, renowned market researcher and psychologist Max Sutherland reveals the secrets of successful campaigns over a wide range of media, including the web and new media. Using many well-known international ads as examples, this book takes us into the mind of the consumer to explain how advertising messages work – or misfire – and why.

Advertising and the Mind of the Consumer is not just a ‘how to’ book of tricks for advertisers, it is a book for everyone who wants to know how advertising works and why it influences us-for people in business with products and services to sell, for advertising agents, marketers, as well as for students of advertising and consumer behaviour.

‘Essential reading for all practitioners and everyone interested in how advertising works .’ – John Zeigler, DDB Worldwide.

‘Finally, a book that evades the ‘magic’ of advertising and pins down the psychological factors that make an ad succesful or not. It will change the way you advertise and see ads.’ – Ignacio Oreamuno, President, ihaveanidea.org

‘. reveals the secrets of effective advertising gleamed from years of sophisticated advertising research. It should be on every manager’s bookshelf.’ – Lawrence Ang, Senior Lecturer in Management, Macquarie Graduate School of Management

‘Breakthrough thinking. I have been consulting in the advertising business and have taught graduate level advertising courses for over 20 years. I have never found a book that brought so much insight to the advertising issues associated with effective selling.’ – Professor Larry Chiagouris, Pace University

  • Accounting for Value (Columbia Business School Publishing)

    02
Accounting for Value teaches investors and analysts how to handle accounting in evaluating equity investments. The book’s novel approach shows that valuation and accounting are much the same: valuation is actually a matter of accounting for value. Laying aside many of the tools of modern finance–the cost-of-capital, the CAPM, and discounted cash flow analysis–Stephen Penman returns to the common-sense principles that have long guided fundamental investing: price is what you pay but value is what you get; the risk in investing is the risk of paying too much; anchor on what you know rather than speculation; and beware of paying too much for speculative growth. Penman puts these ideas in touch with the quantification supplied by accounting, producing practical tools for the intelligent investor. Accounting for value provides protection from paying too much for a stock and clues the investor in to the likely return from buying growth. Strikingly, the analysis finesses the need to calculate a “cost-of-capital,” which often frustrates the application of modern valuation techniques. Accounting for value recasts “value” versus “growth” investing and explains such curiosities as why earnings-to-price and book-to-price ratios predict stock returns. By the end of the book, Penman has the intelligent investor thinking like an intelligent accountant, better equipped to handle the bubbles and crashes of our time. For accounting regulators, Penman also prescribes a formula for intelligent accounting reform, engaging with such controversial issues as fair value accounting.

  • Religion and the Rise of Sport in England

Tells the story of the changing relationship between sport and religion from 1800 to the present day

Both religion and sport stir deep emotions, shape identities, and inspire powerful loyalties. They have sometimes been in competition for people’s resources of time and money, but can also be mutually supportive.

We live in a world where sport seems to be everywhere. Not only is there saturation media coverage but governments extol the benefits of sport for nation and individual, and in 2019 the Church of England appointed a Bishop for Sport. The religious world has not always looked so kindly on sport. In the early nineteenth century, Evangelical Christians led campaigns to ban sports deemed cruel, brutal or disorderly. But from the 1850s Christian and other religious leaders turned from attacking ‘bad’ sports to promoting ‘good’ ones. The pace of change accelerated in the 1960s, as commercialization of sport intensified and Sunday sport became established, while the world of religion was transformed by increasing secularization, a resurgent Evangelicalism, and the growth of a multi-faith society.

This is the first book to tell this story, and while its principal focus is on Christianity, there is additional coverage of Judaism and Islam, as there is of those – from Victorian sporting gentry to present-day football fans and marathon runners – for whom sport is itself a religion.

  • TOBACCO ADVERTISING: The Great Seduction (Schiffer books for collectors) (Schiffer Book for Collectors)

Since 1789, when the first tobacco advertisement appeared, tobacco manufacturers have been pioneers of advertising and marketing, revolutionizing the American way of doing business in the process. The folksy, familiar and innocent-looking images portrayed in tobacco advertising were part of the new wave of product promotion – tin tags, cigar and tobacco labels, insert cards (including the first baseball cards) – that helped transform America into a nation of smokers by 1900. With illustrations of antique artifacts, old photographs and contemporary advertising, the reader is taken through the rapid growth of the tobacco industry following the Civil War, and shown a wide-range of promotional ploys and gimmickry that evolved in this century: tobacco tins, cigarette pack art, and outdoor advertising. Other advertising objects include lapel buttons, pocket mirrors, postcards, watch fobs, pocketknives, envelope stickers and more. All are lavishly illustrated, many in full color, and an informative value guide is included.

  • Robert Motherwell: Pure Painting

An intensely intellectual painter, Robert Motherwell is renowned for his distinctive Abstract Expressionist style. The seminal artist permeated his gestural works with an expressionism and austerity reflective of the human psyche; at the same time his oeuvre addressed political and humanitarian themes. Robert Motherwell: Pure Painting is an in-depth exploration of his artistic practice. Leading art scholars examine the American artist’s turn from Surrealism to abstraction and analyze the major series that developed over his fifty-year career. The catalogue studies the dialogue between Motherwell’s art and the nineteenth-century French painting tradition, investigates his relationship to Spanish techniques and processes, with an emphasis on their underlying political significance, and delves into Motherwell’s use of ochre pigment, with its evocation of both deep geological time and avant-garde practices.

  • James Barry s Murals at the Royal Society of Arts:Envisioning a New Public Art

Between 1777 and 1784, the Irish artist James Barry (1741-1806) executed six murals for the Great Room of the [Royal] Society of Arts in London. Although his works form the most impressive series of history paintings in Great Britain, they remain one of the British art world s best kept secrets, having attracted little attention from critics or the general public. James Barry s Murals at the Royal Society of Arts is the first to offer an in-depth analysis of these remarkable paintings and the first to demonstrate that the artist was pioneering a new approach to public art in terms of the novelty of the patronage and the highly personal nature of his content. Barry insisted on, and received, complete control over his subject matter, the first time in the history of Western art that the patron of a large, impressive interior agreed to such a demand. The artist required autonomy in order to present his personal vision, which encompasses a rich and complex surface narrative as well as a hidden meaning that has gone unperceived for 230 years. The artist disguised his deeper message due to its inflammatory nature. Were his meaning readily apparent, the Society would have thrown out him and his murals. Ultimately, as this book seeks to show, the artist intended his paintings to engage the public in a dialogue that would utterly transform British society in terms of its culture, politics, and religion. In making this case, the book brings this neglected series into the mainstream of discussions of British art of the Romantic period, revealing the intellectual profundity invested in the genre of history painting and re-evaluating the role Christianity played in Enlightenment thought.

    02
    • A unique series of photographs that go behind the scenes in London theatres, capturing world renowned actors before they go on stage
    • Includes a foreword by Cate Blanchett

“Simon Annand is one of the most amazing photographers I have had the pleasure of working with. He is an individualist with an eye for the unusual.” – Dame Judi Dench, actor

British photographer Simon Annand has been shooting candid photographs backstage at West End theatres in London for 35 years. In these meditative portraits, often shot in the intimate space of the dressing room, he captures the focus and tension of world-class actors right before they go on the stage. Actors such as Cate Blanchett, Orlando Bloom, Anthony Hopkins, Jake Gyllenhaal and Judi Dench are seen in these moments of vulnerability, which every actor experiences no matter how long they have been working. Time to Act, with an introduction by Cate Blanchett, contains a hand-picked selection of Simon Annand’s remarkable and unique portraits.

    Reviews:

“…a five-star collection of photographs in Time to Act… capturing the famous faces in the most intimate of spaces the dressing room the book gives a tantalising reminder of the world we are missing while so many venues remain closed.” — Jane Dowdeswell, Hello! magazine

“‘His sensitivity to atmosphere is, quite simply, astonishing,’ says Cate Blanchett, while the man himself tells Eve Watling: ‘It is the crossover of the two personas which fascinates me as a photographer'”. — Eve Watling, Independent

  • Advertising Sin and Sickness: The Politics of Alcohol and Tobacco Marketing, 1950-1990

    01
Temperance advocates believed they could eradicate alcohol by persuading consumers to avoid it; prohibitionists put their faith in legislation forbidding its manufacture, transportation, and sale. After the repeal of the Eighteenth Amendment, however, reformers sought a new method of attack – targeting advertising. In “Advertising Sin and Sickness”, Pamela E. Pennock documents three distinct periods in the history of the national debate over the regulation of alcohol and tobacco marketing. Tracing the fate of proposed federal policies, she introduces their advocates and opponents, from politicians and religious leaders to scientists and businessmen. In the 1950s, the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union and other religious organizations joined hands in an effort to ban all alcohol advertising. They quickly found themselves at odds, however, with an increasingly urbane mainstream American culture. In the 1960s, moralists took backstage to consumer activists and scientific authorities in the campaign to control cigarette advertising and mandate labeling. Secular and scientific arguments came to dominate policy debates, and the controversy over alcohol marketing during the 1970s and 1980s highlighted the issues of substance abuse, public health, and consumer rights. The politics of alcohol and tobacco advertising reflect profound cultural dilemmas about consumerism and private enterprise, morality and health, scientific authority and the legitimate regulation of commercial speech. Today, the United States continues to face difficult questions about the proper role of the federal government when powerful industries market potentially harmful but undoubtedly popular products.

    THE SHINING

    FIRESTARTER

You’re a firestarter honey . . . just one big zippo lighter. A year ago, he was an upstanding instructor of English at Harrison State College. Now Andy is on the run with his daughter. A pigtailed girl named Charlie. A girl with an unimaginably terrifying gift.

    SALEM’S LOT

‘Salem’s Lot is a small New England town with the usual quota of gossips, drinkers, weirdos and respectable folk. Of course there are tales of strange happenings – but not more than in any other town its size. Soon surprise will turn to bewilderment, bewilderment to confusion and finally to terror . . .

    CUJO

Once upon a time, not so long ago, a monster came to the small town of Castle Rock, Maine . . . He was not a werewolf, vampire, ghoul, or unnameable creature from the enchanted forest or snow wastes; he was only a cop . . . Cujo is a huge Saint Bernard dog, the best friend Brett Camber has ever had. Then one day Cujo chases a rabbit into a bolt-hole.

    Pet Sematary:
The house looked right, felt right to Dr Louis Creed.Rambling, old, unsmart and comfortable. A place where the family could settle; the children grow and play and explore. The rolling hills and meadows of Maine seemed a world away from the fume-choked dangers of Chicago. Only the occasional big truck out on the two-lane highway, grinding up through the gears, hammering down the long gradients, growled out an intrusive threat.

    The Shining:
Danny is only five years old, but in the words of old Mr Hallorann he is a ‘shiner’, aglow with psychic voltage. When his father becomes caretaker of the Overlook Hotel, Danny’s visions grow out of control. As winter closes in and blizzards cut them off, the hotel seems to develop a life of its own.

    It:
Soon to be a major motion picture – Stephen King’s terrifying classic. ‘They float…and when you’re down here with me, you’ll float, too.’To the children, the town was their whole world. To the adults, knowing better, Derry Maine was just their home town: familiar, well-ordered for the most part. A good place to live.It is the children who see – and feel – what makes the small town of Derry so horribly different.

    Doctor Sleep:
Following a childhood haunted by terrifying events at the Overlook Hotel, Dan Torrance has been drifting for decades. Finally, he settles into a job at a nursing home where he draws on his remnant ‘shining’ power to provide crucial comfort to the dying. Aided by a prescient cat, he becomes ‘Doctor Sleep’.
